Why is it that women gathered around and put a stop to it for them but men don't seem to care about it?

You're sorely mistaken here, unfortunately. Feminist and "won't somebody think of the women" people managed to get FGM banned in the developed world or least some of our countries. The women that are actually affected by FGM are just as unwilling to abandon the practice as mutilated men are.

You should be upset and many men are. Many other men can't express how upset they are, more cover their feelings by overcompensating and others are religious.

If you care about it, you should do something.

I'm a woman and I'm angry as hell that it's not illegal.

I think it's because:

People just don't understand how damaging it is
People who've had it done tout the "I had it done, and I'm fine" line (you do see the same with some circumcised women as well)
People keep pointing to scientific studies showing the various good things it does and ignore the non-surgical alternatives (ie HIV transmission reducing in studies and ignoring the fact that you can wear a condom...)
Women's groups leaping to the "but it's worse for women" line whenever it's brought up as a horrible issue on par with FGM
The "hygiene" thing (because it's so much more hygienic to have an open wound exposed to urine and faeces...)
The culture/religion excuses

As someone who has been circumcised since birth (religion, I think), is there a certain benefit to having a foreskin as opposed to not?

Trying to not sound like an ass, just honestly wondering.

I'm gay, and I was just recently criticized really harshly by a guy I was thinking about asking out on a date, we were talking, and I asked him "cut, or uncut?" he said "cut, and prefer cut."

I thought "Ok, it's just a preference, we all have em, no biggie."

he then goes on to tell me he thinks uncut is "gross." and that if I was naked around him, he'd ask me to cover myself.

I raged so fucking hard at him, you have no idea.

I found out later he was jewish, that's why he didn't like uncut.

I had a sneaking suspicion, he had a huge nose, and was super over-bearing, total control freak, hindsights always 20/20, I guess.

I have a very dear jewish friend who says he prefers cut, but it's not a huge deal for him to fool around with uncut, so it just depends on the person, I guess.

I'm super proud of my foreskin, not many guys my age have em, they're rare on young guys in the states, so to have that asshole try, and make me feel ashamed of my body made me wanna whup his ass.

I don't get upset about mine because getting angry about it won't change anything.

But before our son was born I argued extensively with my wife about not having it done. It took a while for her to get the concept that chopping off a part of someone else's body without their consent is wrong regardless of how popular it is.

I try not to care, at least. I already have a severe anxiety disorder, which only worsens my insecurity about literally everything, so I have to watch myself and what I get worked up over. If I start having anxiety or insecurity about something, it will take over my whole consciousness. So I try not to care, in fact I never had any kind of insecurity about my penis in particular until I came here. Thanks for that, /r/mensrights.

I'm going to be fully honest here: I'm pro-circumcision. I'm okay with having a little less pleasure if it means reduced risk of HIV. I understand the outrage with the whole, "But it's someone else's body and they don't get to make the decision!" thing, but I didn't get to choose whether or not to have my first heart surgery when I was an infant, my parents did. There's no outrage in letting parents choose other procedures for a child, so why's this one so different? Plus, I would rather not get tears in my foreskin, sweet jesus that sounds painful.

EDIT: Please don't downvote me to hell just because I have a differing opinion

Probably because calling yourself "mutilated" is absolute bullshit and most men are just fine with being circumcised, whereas women all over the world risk their lives to end FGM.

I'll be straight up honest. I've had it done and I don't ever remember it happening (it happened right after I was born), nor do I give a shit. And I'd rather have it this way than worry about infections and such.
