I think it's totally backwards that women are exempt from draft, but I also think it is discrimination. Just because it 'protects' women, doesn't make it less discriminating. And men suffer from it too. A stronger, bigger military force with more women would benefit everyone in times of war.
If my country was ever at war, I'd want to protect it. I wouldn't like going into combat or see it as a privilige (but who does, really), but I'm strong and fit, and with the right training, I can't think of any roles I couldn't fulfill.
Hearing people say women should be exempt because they're fragile, or because they have different obligations, like staying home for the kids, just makes my blood boil. Just like the ridiculous notion that women would be a distraction and weaken the army. If you look at the Israeli army, where women hold about 70% of all positions, you see it can be done.

Maybe. I can also imagine that some men wouldn't want women to fulfill that role instead of them, or would be distracted / more focussed on their well-being. That could cause some problems. I still wouldn't want a guy to take my place, just because I'm a woman. I don't have any kids, nobody depends on me, so in a way, my life would be less 'valuable' than that of a father, for example.
But there are many important roles in times of war, and everyone should do as much as they're capable of, regardless of sex.
Let's just say there's a lot of room for improvement.

In 1981, the National Organization for Women and Women's Equity Action League Educational and Legal Defense Fund went to trial in Rostker v. Goldberg for women to be registered for the draft. But the court ruled against it, saying that "training would be needlessly burdened by women recruits who could not be used in combat."
We could try this again though. I'm sure if people got some organizations together to take the issue to court once more, after women have been shown to serve usefully in the military, we might make headway.

Can you provide me with evidence that a significant portion of women actually think that?
Edit (before a reply): I'm only asking that you don't assume a minority of extreme views by some less than sane individuals represent women/feminism. I know this is a tired example, but the Westboro Baptist Church doesn't speak for Christianity. One man raping a woman doesn't mean all men support rape.
Any reasonable person knows that war is beyond tragic. This either/or example doesn't exist. Of course getting shot is worse than being thought poorly of. However, different people fight for different causes. An environmentalist isn't going to be working toward ending poverty. We pick our focus and hope that others work on the other issues. It is reasonable for one person to fight to end prejudice against women, while another works to end the draft.
That's the great thing about the MRM. Women can work on women's issues, men can work on men's issues. This isn't a new thing: people have been focusing on causes close to home for quite some time (see the black movement and suffrage movement).

A little discussed fact also: Males 18 years of age MUST register for selective service or they can not receive state and federal grants, loans and or lottery money for college. They are also subject to prison of 5 years AND be fined $250,000.00.

The Netherlands still has a draft. It has not been active for 20 years, but it can become active if the government deems it necessary (in case of war, for example).
It only applies to men of course. Never heard a woman complain about this.

Mandatory military service for men is quite common worldwide. Some countries demand that you serve for a period of time, others demand that you simply register for a draft, should the time come for people to be needed.
In the US, draft registration is mandatory, but no one's been called to active duty via the draft since the Vietnam Conflict.
Yeah, in Greece and Israel, military service is mandatory. And in Israel both men and women have to do it I think.

As an Infantry Marine this was a point of contention as my unit actually participated in setting the standard, physically, for integration. The female units that participated in testing against that standard never came close. Top brass were willing to open combat MOS's if the draft were implemented across the board. Naturally, the feminazi's went batshit about it and the can got kicked down the road 6 months and top brass were forced to open the MOS's anyway. A handful of women have attempted the schools since. None have passed.
So what's the big deal? If candidates of any gender who can't pass can't get in, the system is working...

The big deal is that as time passes and females can't meet the standards, the standards will be labeled as discriminatory and either lowered or they will be graded on a different scale. It's already how non-combat MOS's work. Mark my words, the day will come.

It fucking pissess me off. In a year I will stand before the Army Medical Advisory Board which will play with my balls a little and then in case shit goes down I will be called to fight. Women don't have any sort of board and are not called to war
you aren't "called to war" either.... women also fight nowadays. and last time i checked, uncle sam's "call" has been a voluntary decision since 1973.

I live in Poland. You have to show up for the "Army Comission" and then when there's a mobilization going on they will draft you. Up until 2009 you had to go to the army for some time. The problem with the commision is that you have to have all your limbs missing not to get an A, which stands for "always capable of serving in the military".

Seems the "draft" is a popular topic here. What the draft was, is, and always will be is a way to get young men, (or women), to work for lower compensation than what people are willing to work for. You offer enough pay, or other incentive, (such as the US actually being invaded), you need no draft. Want to save even more money? Draft everything required to wage war, people, equipment, all of it... (then see how many wars we'd be in, without anyone making a profit).

Based on your reply, I would assume you'd leave the country, (as many did), to avoid the draft, and/or prison. There are many distasteful, dangerous jobs that we don't have to draft people to do. Currently, military service is one of them. We don't need a draft, because the compensation is enough to attract enough to serve willingly. This was not the case during the 60's.
I agree with you about the draft not being NECESSARY right now, based on current levels. But we're certainly not in a world war. And if we were, we'd need more people most likely. You'd never convince ME to join just for money.
I'd argue there aren't many jobs that are more dangerous than infantry.

In WWII just about ever able bodied man was in the military of some sorts fighting the war effort. It was so bad that women (No real rights yet) were brought into the labor force to make up for the lack of men. Men were drafted in WWII because there was a literal shortage of men, compensation had nothing to do with it.
You are correct. WWII had us drafting entire companies to make weapons, instituted rationing, internment camps, all kinds of crazy stuff.
I wasn't around then, but I was during Vietnam, and that was a whole other kind of draft. Auto and aviation companies didn't quit making civilian cars and helicopters, and women weren't being hired so the menfolk could go off and fight. That war was about profit, and it profited everyone involved except the kids being drafted.
