“David Mitchell has criticised the term ‘mansplaining’, suggesting it’s not a fair description and is simply how men tend to communicate, not just with women, but with everyone.

The Peep Show actor, 51, shared his thoughts during a recent interview while discussing male friendships. He touched on the much-maligned concept of mansplaining, typically used to describe men explaining things to women in an overconfident or condescending manner.

“You talk about funny things that occur to you,” Mitchell said, describing the nature of conversations he has with long-time friend and co-star Robert Webb, with whom he’s shared a 30-year friendship.

“I feel there’s an unfairness to the term mansplaining, which is taken to be men explaining things in a boring way to women,” he told The Sunday Times. “Because they do it to each other, and they take turns, and that’s what men call a conversation.”

He went on to explain that men often engage in what he called a “little mutual explain”, politely waiting for the other to finish before launching into their own explanation. “If someone won’t let you get an explaining in, that’s not a good sort of conversational partner,” he added.

Mitchell lives in north London with his wife of 13 years, Victoria Coren Mitchell. The couple met briefly in 2007 before marrying five years later, and they now have two children — Barbara, 10, and June, two.

The interview also revealed that while Mitchell and Webb have a famously close bond, they rarely spoke in depth about Webb’s past issues with alcoholism or the heart surgery he underwent in 2020, only having “the odd conversation” about it.

This discussion comes just ahead of the launch of their new Channel 4 sketch show, Mitchell and Webb Are Not Helping, a six-part series premiering on 5 September. It marks the first time the comedic duo have appeared on screen together since Back in 2017, and 12 years since the end of Peep Show.”
