It's a good thing they included that blurb to warn females. How awful, if it wasn't explicitly stated then women may have accidentally subjected themselves to the potential horrors of conscription.

Luckily that didn't happen... except to every American male. /S

Either abolish it or make women have to do it. Why this hasn't gotten a lawsuit yet I don't know.

You know what's worse? Sitting in a filthy foxhole, for months, before a bullet rips through your chest and you die in a filthy ditch for a cause you don't understand.

How many women of faced off ss panzer battle groups and fought to the death at Arnhem?

How many women defended the downed black hawk in modadishu?

How many women charged on the ottoman positions in bersheeba?

Women have it shit in some places, we know, but not war.

In Finland, where I live, young men have to serve in the military for 6-11 months. For women it's voluntary and they can opt out during the first month or so. Men who don't want to do military must "slave" for 12 months in a job they must themselves obtain. It's called "civil service" (siviilipalvelus). This civil service means typically something like taking care of the elderly in an institution or little kids in a day care center. If you do neither, military or civil, it's prison time (although in practise there are more options involving for example a friendly or pacifist psychiatrist).

Recently a committee which dealt with these issues came to the conclusion that the system is unfair. Yes, you guessed it, towards women. So they suggested that the civil service option must be made available to to the women who want to get the work experience or for whatever reason somebody would like to work for €200-300 per month without the right to quit.

I think this illustrates nicely how differently the society views men and women. Men, do what you're told or face the consequences! Women, tell what would you like to do and we'll do what we can to help you.

It's shameful.

(Finland is a small nation with a very long border with Russia, if you wondered about the militarism in an otherwise peaceful country.)

Selective service is about male disposablility. The idea that one man can be the father of many different children within a 9 month period of time, but one woman can only birth one child every 9 month, two if they're twins. An antiquated view of the value of each sex that made sense when infant mortality was a very big issue.

Then there's sexual dimorphism. Male humans are stronger than female humans. No amount of feminist propaganda can change genetics and anatomy. That being said, you don't need to be strong in order to hold a rifle and fire. You just need to be strong enough to fight the recoil. Male only soldiers would make sense if we were swinging swords and using shields. We are not, though. We've grown out of that.

Birth rates are high (too high in some places), infant mortality rates are not too much of an issue anymore, and our weaponry has evolved. There is no reason why women should be excluded from the draft just because they're women.

However, instead of forcing someone to do something against their will, why not make "volunteering" for selective service an actual volunteering action? Not too much to ask, right?

I really wish I had never registered for this in high school. They try to scare you by saying if you don't register by 25, you can be fined and denied certain jobs the rest of your life. We shouldn't make it easier for them to draft either men or women to go kill brown kids who've done nothing to us in other countries.

The fact that the government feels no need to its explain its gender bias against men, and the media doesn't bother trying to compel it, speaks a lot. What do you think the government would say if it was forced?

"well obviously equality doesn't really mean we should actually treat women the same as men"

"women need to be protected"

But the fact they just don't even feel the need to address this kind of discrimination, despite their constant calls for equality, is what really bugs me.

I don't think the draft will be used any time soon, however, I think politicians should have to fight alongside whoever they make kill and get killed. The problem is that the government can force you to do this, and historically for trivial reasons, not that they exclude women. The draft shouldn't be gender neutral, it should be abolished.
