Echoing a previous answer: we don’t live in a patriarchy so anything based on that premise is an argument based on a false premise. Call out the false premise and don’t engage beyond that.

Misandry is structural violence. Misandry did not begin in 2012 or in 1990; feminists did not create misandry—it already existed long before. A clear historical example is the myth of the black rapist, which constructed the Black man as an intrinsic sexual threat. “But that is not because he is a man, but because he is Black.” If you are familiar with intersectionality, then you know that gender interacted with race: the stereotype did not fall upon Black women in the same way. Misandry manifested itself as a form of instrumental dehumanization: the man as a resource. For example, the White Feather campaign. Misandry has existed as an extremely necessary part of patriarchal systems. However, it is possible to distinguish these historical forms of misandry from a more recent form linked to contemporary discourse: neomisandry.

I will call neomisandry a contemporary form of misandry characterized by explicitly hostile discourses toward men (frequently spread through social media and media spaces) that portray men as intrinsically dangerous or morally inferior.

So why not simply call it sexism? Because sexism is a more general term. Misandry, on the other hand, refers to different forms of sexism against men; in other words, it is more specific, since it refers only to sexism directed at males.

Is neomisandry a response to the oppression that women suffer? It is a factor to take into account, but reducing neomisandry to a response to negative experiences with men is an excessive causal simplification. It is a fallacy that occurs when one assumes that there is a single simple cause for a result, when in reality it may have been caused by a series of causes that are only sufficient together.

If neomisandry were only a direct reaction to negative experiences with men, one would expect that the contexts where it appears most would be those with higher levels of violence against women and lower levels of development. However, what we often observe is the opposite: many of the environments where these discourses are most visible correspond to relatively developed societies, where women enjoy higher levels of well-being and rights.

This does not mean that negative experiences play no role. It is evident that misandric discourses can feed on real experiences of harm or conflict. Nevertheless, those experiences alone do not explain the magnitude of the phenomenon. These experiences are often reinterpreted and amplified as part of a process of mass manipulation.

We see that racism was justified by appealing to the supposed “cultural inferiority” of the Black population. In this way, discrimination was not presented as prejudice, but as a defensive response to a perceived threat.

The argument that “misandry is simply a response to misogyny” reproduces a very old discursive logic: justifying hostility toward a group by claiming that such hostility is nothing more than an inevitable reaction to the behavior of that same group. It is a fairly recurrent rhetorical strategy used to legitimize prejudice and discrimination, one that has historically been used in multiple contexts. All the arguments we see used to justify misandry are nothing more than a blatant plagiarism of old arguments that were used to justify racism.

"Patriarchy" is effectively men playing the roles that women expect of them because they do not want to do the work themselves. Women still hold most of the power and those roles are still very much rooted in male disposability and servitude. So more that misandry causes the illusion of "patriarchy", not the other way around.

The attempt to blame so-called “patriarchy” for misandry is a convenient intellectual shortcut used to avoid confronting a very real and growing prejudice against men. Dismissing misandry as imaginary while simultaneously justifying hostility toward men exposes the contradiction in that thinking. Real equality demands acknowledging discrimination wherever it occurs, including when men are the targets, rather than hiding behind ideological labels that shut down honest discussion.

Whatever the situation, the #1 argument will always be "It's your fault". Which is what this boils down to. Alternatively it can be read as "it's not my fault" if that makes it clearer.

I would never use the word "patriarchy", but I think western culture has always been unfairly cruel to men in certain matters. The fact that all cultures use men in pointless wars as canon fodder, courts always taking the women's side in divorce & child custody are the two main examples of a culture that doesn't see men as human or deserving of life & equal treatment.

It more or less breaks down to the claim that “negative behavior of a group creates negative sentiment towards that group”. That is in itself not a wrong claim. It just of course runs both ways. So misogyny would equally be created by systemic negative behavior by women.

And ignores that of course, negative sentiment can arise from other sources as well.

This is a very typical form of dishonest reasoning, mixing some valid argument in, but using a selection bias and ignoring other points.

Patriarchy means men are in charge. That imply being expected to go to war, be the breadwinner and the worker. If men are forced to be drafted because they’re men and "it’s their duty", this is how patriarchy can be misandrist
