Awesome! I took a similar class in college called "Race, Class, Sex & Sexuality" which was taught by a feminist professor. Once a week someone would give a presentation on marginalized groups and I chose male rape victims. My professor loved it. My class, which had only 3 men, also very much enjoyed the topic. I often hear people's bad experiences in classes like these, so it's very refreshing to hear that someone had a positive experience much like my own was :)

That's because, despite what many redditors may believe, most educated and/or intelligent feminists aren't crazy man hating-lesbians who are out to get the male population and can in fact fathom men having social issues as well. Believe it or not, most feminists are rational intelligent human beings who understand there are issues men have to face as well.

That's a very good experience! I'm glad to hear about it.

I had a similar experience. My Social Ethics lecturer in college was a Foucault scholar who self-identified as a feminist. And not only did we have extremely productive discussions, but she graded me in a very intellectually honest fashion. And one of my term papers was a criticism of a Radfem article which argued that men have collective responsibilty for rape.

So yeah, whilst there are intellectually dishonest members of the academy, there are honest ones too.

This is post modern discourse. In real argument appeals to emotion should be seen as a sign of a weak argument. But for feminists and many current thinkers that is not true, thanks to ideas like people's (usually women's) "different ways of knowing" emotions are seen as perfectly valid forms of reason which is both ridiculous and unfortunate. Discussion/Argumentative styles which include emotional appeals often devolve into physical violence. But I'm glad you had success.

The problem we face is really nothing more than 'Bandwagon-isis'

A person is rational and smart, but put that same person in with a group and vioal! They'll instantly conform to fit in.

This is the true crux of the issue, and why so many people respond with logical rational comments, only to turn around and parrot some rheotoric when needed.

We have to change wagons or nothing will ever work.

It's not uncommon for moderate feminists to acknowledge the problems that men face, but most of them still attribute those problems to the feminist boogeyman.

Appealing to emotion may be a great way to win an argument but it makes you a worse human being. If you can't defend your ideas with reason and must stoop so low as to make an emotional plea, then you've stopped worrying about the truth and started focusing on winning for the sake of it.
