I'm not sure about the US, but here in the UK voting was based on land ownership which meant that women could vote if they owned land. We have records going back to about the 16th century both in the Mainland Uk and what was the Thirteen Colonies (before the act of treasonous colonial aggression that is) of women voting.

What a lot of Feminists here in the UK ignore is that the act of Parliament that gave universal suffrage included 5 million men (as well at the 8 million women) and that the vast majority of the men who died in the trenches of WW1 (at least those from the UK) couldn't vote at all

If we are regarding the US? No. Not all men could vote in 1917. Native American men could not vote. Residents of DC could not vote. Chinese immigrants couldn't vote until 43. Minorities faced adversity in voting up until 65 or so. Wasn't until the 70s that 18 became the voting age despite men being drafted at the age of 18. It wasn't until the mid 80s that military members stationed overseas could vote. Guess what, the military is majority men.

What you're talking about is 'feminist revisionist history'. Yes, some women could vote, she women had jobs in all sorts of industries, some women didn't get married or have children, plenty of women had educations - the idea that women had the boot of oppression firmly on their necks until last week is flat out bullshit.

In the UK, ALL men over 21 and ALL women over 30 got the vote in 1919.

In 1929 ALL women over 21 got the vote. Why the inequality? So many men had died in WW1 the govt wanted to balance the demographics.

OTOH, men didn't get the RIGHT to vote the way women did. Men got the OPPORTUNITY to vote, concomitant with being subject to military drafts.

That's an imbalance that still exists. Certainly in the US with selective service. Avoiding registration is a felony and (while no states officially do so ATM) it is legal to bar felons from voting. Ergo, voting comes with military responsibilities for men and MEN ONLY.

There are some countries where both men and women are subject to draft, today and historically; some Nordic countries, Israel, Iran, WW2 era USSR, probably others but they are still a minority.

Another kink in who could vote in the US was how far west you look. Territories generally had more open voting laws.

Depends on how strictly you define 'voting rights'. You could argue that men and women don't have equal voting rights today. For example convicted Felons do not have voting rights. Guess what is a felony? Not registering for selective service. Who has to register for selective service? Only men.

In order to retain voting rights as a male you have to consent to be drafted. Women are under no such obligation.

Another interesting fact:

18-21 year-olds gained the right to vote in 1971. Due largely due to 18-21 year-old men being drafted and sent off to Vietnam to be slaughtered. What did 18-21 year-old women do to earn this right? Diddely squat.

Voting rights have been expanding since the start of modern democracy. Each country is different. If I remember correctly, In New Zealand voting rights were limited to male property owners with a certain amount of property. Then people who paid a large amount of rent where included. Then the threshold for rent was lowered. Then Maori men were included. Next it was gold minors because there was some issues between the minors and local government. Then all males citizens with a residence. Then women. Then sailors who lived on boats who didn't have a residence. Then permanent residents who had been in the country long enough. Then NewZealand citizens who were overseas.

Also, sometimes voting rights have been removed. For example prisoners used to be able to vote but now they can't

Whatever other restrictions there were on voting, only men had the right to vote in early America because only men had the obligation to go off and die to defend the country. Women got the right to vote for nothing.

Is there a book about this somewhere I can read?

It's a great question. I know a lot of voting rights prior to the civil war were tied to property rights. Most people in those days couldn't vote. Some women who owned property could vote.

In order to encourage men to fight, voting rights were extended.

I would like to know more. Thank you for bringing it up. Does anyone have a link?

Briefly looking it up, it appears that Universal Male voting rights only became a thing in most democracies after 1840s with France initially taking the lead, so realistically you could say women only waited 50 -70 years to get voting rights. Previously I believe it was believed that only the land owners should get a vote as they need the country to prosper to make money, thus they would vote in their best interest which should have been the countries too.

They also believed that the average common man/woman wouldn't care enough about politics to make informed decisions which is true for the most part but they the land owners weren't always acting in their countries best interest either.
