I love all the debates, and these discussions are important to have. But in the United States, what can we do to make this outlawed?

As far as I can see it the most actionable plan would be to do it state by state with ballot initiatives for states that allow that in their constitution. Get it on the ballot.

The safest things to get on the ballot (the lowest hanging fruit that even circumcision supporters would support):

  1. Require properly informed consent by both parents to get a non medically necessary permanent body modification for your child.
  2. Doctors and other health care providers should not be allowed to ask if they want their child to be modified without prior inquiry: the inquiry should come from the parents themselves. This is to prevent psychological priming or (in my case, when I was a baby) it just being the default assumption (parents who are already stressed out might just say "sure whatever").
  3. Require a 30 day waiting period after being fully informed.

I think these three things should be relatively easy to get on the ballot in most states, especially politically left leaning states.

Once those are on the ballot and passed into law:

We then need to move to ballot initiative #2 which would be far more difficult to get on the ballot: this is where information spreading and educational contebt / spreading awareness is important. But it needs to be framed properly. Don't frame as "Circumcision will become illegal for a yes vote on this initiative." Frame it as the following:

  1. "Non medically necessary surgery or otherwise permanent body modification to a child will be illegal; exceptions for specific cosmetic modifications are allowed for cases corrections of birth defects"
  2. "Once the child is 18, they are allowed to perform any non-medically necessarily surgery / permanent body modification they chose to"

This would effectively outlaw circumcision without talking about circumcision: and you can get conservatives and moderates on your side fairly easily without many of them thinking about the religious parts of circumcision and the positive connections they may have to that. It would also outlaw: non medically necessary liposuction, Botox, plastic surgery, et cetera on children. Including outlawing any sterilizing hormone therapy or surgery on transgender children. (My position is that it's never the parent's choice to give the child hormones or gender transition surgery that effectively permanently sterilize them, which is what happens when FTM or MTF transgender people take hormone therapies: children can make that choice when they're adults only)

I think it's time to just be done talking and start taking action. In your own state: please start a ballot initiative and start collecting signatures. On your ballot initiatives, please refrain from using the word "circumcision" or "genital mutilation" and instead simply talk about "non medically necessary permanent body modifications", as those terms are more loaded politically: we don't need those connotations. Avoid language about transgender people as that is also a topic with too much political stress (although, if you want to use that in marketing to conservatives, then yes that would be appropriate, just shouldn't be in the actual language of the ballot initiative).

P.S. I hate the PR speak and political spin you have to do with things like this, but what matters is results; if we can get the result we need without lying or misleading anyone, then I think it's good. A lie by omission wouldn't be true either, because in most states ballot initiative summaries are created by the state attorney general I believe, not the author of the initiative themselves.
