Whenever the topic of "who needs men anyway" or "It's women't turn now, stand aside, men!" comes up it's important to remember that although there are huge efforts to ensure equal gender representation in fields seen as prestigious or highly desirable there is almost no effort whatsoever to ensure gender parity in fields that (while absolutely essential) are seen as mundane or undesirable.

It's particularly irksome when there's a national "woman boycott" day to show how hard things would be without women around, or to raise awareness for the important things women do in society. As a counterpoint. lets take a look at how things would look if men just suddenly vanished.

100% of power plant operators, distributors, and dispatchers are men. Immediate planetwide power outage.

91% of the nation’s electrical engineers are men and 97.6% of electrical power line installers and maintenance workers are men. Said power outage would never be fixed.

95.5% of water and liquid waste treatment plant and system operators are men. So there goes water after electicity. Probably just as well though since the plants won't have any power and there's probably a bit of radioactivity by this point as well.

95.9% of aircraft pilots and flight engineers are men.

98.4% of aircraft mechanics and service technicians are men.

Almost 100% of air traffic controllers and airfield operations specialists are men.

Almost 100% of locomotive engineers and operators are men, as are 100% of the workers who operate railroad brake, signals and switches. 94.4% of railway yardmasters are men.

All transportation other than cars stops immediately. Cars only last so long because...

97.5% of the mining and resource extraction workforce is male. Cars would only run until they ran out of gas.

87.4% of police and sheriff’s patrol officers are men. 96.6% of firefighters are men. 68.8% of Emergency Medical Technicians and Paramedics are men.

No water, no power, no transport, and no one to keep the peace.

For all computer and mathematical occupations combined, 74.4% of the workforce is male. Computer network architects, who design and implement all our computer based communications systems are 91.9% men. And 94.2% of radio and telecommunications equipment installers and repair technicians are men. No one is talking to anyone else.

98.4% of heating, air-conditioning and refrigeration mechanics and installers are men.

Of all professions that install, maintain or repair, 96.8% is male.

Power, water, and food distribution and production stop more or less immediately. Social order is irrelevant because virtually all communication has ceased. Of the few qualified personnel left, there are nowhere near enough to keep up with the repairs even if transportation was still working (which it isn't).

Almost everything vital for modern life would break, if not immediately, then soon thereafter, and would likely never be fixed. It's literally the end of civilization. The planet is a radioactive, septic, graveyard of billions.

That's what happens if men just up and vanish one day. These are the things that men do, that have become so ubiquitous, so commonplace, that we think about their existence just about as often as we think about breathing air.
