It seems most of the hashtags are coming from feminists themselves trying to defend themselves. Are they not putting more fire to the problem? or maybe I just don't know how twitter works.

There's an article on it here http://www.inquisitr.com/1398203/ugly-feminists-freak-out-over-feministsareugly-hashtag/ it says that other antifeminist hashtags (i.e. #idontneedfeminism) started trending and it escalated from there. It goes on to say that the origins are unclear. So maybe not that helpful, but at least it's something.
