Images speak louder than BIASES
[–]jeegte12 7 points8 points9 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
sorry, but absolutely nothing speaks louder than biases. in a conflict between a bias and an image utterly disproving that bias, the bias will win. and now i've semantically satiated the word bias.

And then more and more politicians become women. And then people think they've actually fixed the underlying problems, but instead there's just a new face. Same reason HR is mostly women
[–]snupher 12 points13 points14 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Hmm... I wonder what happened because the stat backed by actual info has always been only 10-15% are women, depending on where they are talking about. That would be 1 in 10 or 1 in 6 and 1/2...
[–]-Master-Builder- 3 points4 points5 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Let's just round it to the nearest quarter.
4 of 4 homeless people are men.
[–]der-will-nur-spielen 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Yep, that sounds more like the real numbers.

Cmon guys, we should be outraged that ANY women are homeless. I mean those other 75%? Nah, fuck em. As long as no homeless people are women, things are okay.
[–]dreamstretch 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
They didn't actually work with homeless people. Some people on the internet make things up.
[–]Voidslan 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
People, the real jewel here is that 3/4 of homeless people are not specifically female. Sure the focus is on women but now we get to criticize it for excluding the male and trans community.
[–]dontpet 4 points5 points6 points 8 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link
There is a similar approach used for male victims of dv. http://www.oneinthree.com.au/
I've never thought of that crew as denying the existence and importance of female victims. Could be those creating the image have the same idea.
Or could be they believe they will get more donations or other support including women.
[–]ISOanexplanation 4 points5 points6 points 8 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link
Interesting site. Particularly this:
At least one in three victims of family violence is male. Men who have experienced partner violence are 2 to 3 times more likely than women to have never told anybody about it.
At least one in three victims of family violence is male.

From that I'm guessing that their first stat is an underestimate.
[–]dontpet 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
True. Not much point saying anything for a lot of guys. Nice to see it being aired on Reddit.
[–]DennistheDutchie 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Also not strange considering it's likely you'll get arrested if you report it (as a man).
[–]dickcomments 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Are you saying if you are a man that reports physical abuse that has been committed against you that you are likely to be arrested for reporting it?

[–]DarkDoesThings 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I remember hearing "If she starts punching you, you better get outta there, 'cuz if she so much as breaks a finger nail on you, you're getting arrested" in a documentary (The red pill?)
[–]tortillastomper 9 points10 points11 points 8 years ago (35 children) | Copy Link
More importantly, how many are children? I don't really care if an adult is homeless, it happens and they can get help. It's kids who are stuck. Kids shouldn't be homeless.
[–]mwobuddy 61 points62 points63 points 8 years ago (32 children) | Copy Link
it happens and they can get help.
not really.
[+]tortillastomper -23 points-22 points-21 points 8 years ago (31 children) | Copy Link
Yeah they can, it just takes a little effort. In my area the county will pay for a motel for you to live in until you find an apartment. Then if you don't have a job, they will help you find one or get on public assistance until you find one to pay for that apartment. We tried to get my uncle to do that, but he didn't want to. My mom looked for and set up the paperwork for all those programs, but my uncle refused. He would rather run the streets getting high on meth. Didn't even want the rehab we tried to get him to. I know this is just anecdotal, but there is help, even for men ttat really just takes a few phone calls and standing in line for hours.
[–]guerrero2 20 points21 points22 points 8 years ago (28 children) | Copy Link
There might be help in many cases, but in other cases there is not. I don't live in the US, but where I live, there are many hurdles to overcome to get help. Sometimes if you're a foreigner you won't get much help at all.
[–]tortillastomper 5 points6 points7 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
True. In the US you can get tons of help but in other countries, you're on your own. That really sucks, man.
[–]uhh__Alex -4 points-3 points-2 points 8 years ago (26 children) | Copy Link
Well.. only 2% of Americans are poor by global standards.
People need to stop complaining about our economy here and focus on the people who actually need help.
[–]CatManDontDo 5 points6 points7 points 8 years ago (19 children) | Copy Link
I dunno man. I see camps of people living beneath overpasses, people who can't get the medicine they need, people who have pretty damn bad. That's just in my small city.
We've got a lot of domestic issues to deal with. "don't pull the speck from you neighbors eye while you've got a log in yours"
[–]Strongblackfemale -5 points-4 points-3 points 8 years ago (18 children) | Copy Link
Those people choose to live like that because they are drug addicts and alcoholics. We live in a country where our poorest people are the most obese. Wrap your head around that. I used to think like you in my early 20's, then I actually went out and tried to help the homeless by volunteering at shelters. I learned that 99% are just lazy entitled addicts who have zero desire for anything more than there next fix. There is no fixing the motives of others. Being homeless and poor in the most successful nation with the most opportunity is nothing to feel bad for someone for, it's their choice.
[–]dreamstretch 4 points5 points6 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Wow. You're a really terrible person.
Or maybe just a badly informed person.
[–]uhh__Alex -1 points0 points1 point 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
How are they a terrible person? They worked with homeless people enough to find out what why're like.. you're just name calling on Reddit. Real helpful.
[–]badhairguy 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
You have an unpopular opinion but you are 100% correct. I was homeless for about 4 months a few years back and from being around those type of people I can confirm what you are saying. People turned down free housing because drug tests or breathalizers were required.
[–]number4ty7 -3 points-2 points-1 points 8 years ago (13 children) | Copy Link
You think people choose to have these problems?
[–]Panzermacht 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link
Yes. Obviously.
To be clear people don't want to be homeless or addicted, but they make many choices in life that lead them there.
We should give those people another chance, but rarely will a person get to that point in life because of "bad luck".
[–]number4ty7 -2 points-1 points0 points 8 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link
You have a lot of growing up to do.
[–]uhh__Alex2 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
"Growing up" is realizing that not everybody makes good choices even if they're given the chances. Some people are stupid. To blame that on society as a whole is ignorant of individuals.
[–]number4ty70 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Most homeless people have significant issues. Be it ex combat ptsd, childhood trauma, childhood abuse and mental health problems.
Choice is a cop out for shit healthcare and lack of empathy.
Look at statistics for kids who grow up in fatherless homes, then checkout those for kids in state care, combat vet statistics, child abuse survivors and those with mental health problems then come back and tell me about 'choices'.
[–]Panzermacht2 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
?
Look, I like it when people disagree with me, it gives me a chance to learn something.
But if you tell me I'm wrong/immature without telling me what exactly was wrong, why it is wrong and what I should change my opinion towards then you are just a lazy sack of shit.
Did I offend you perhaps?
Offended? No. I genuinely believe at some point in your life you will come across a situation that will change your viewpoint. The fact that I believe that moment is very far away is the observation that your current viewpoint is so infantile as to be bordering on retarded.
Hope that clarifies things for you.
[–]Strongblackfemale1 point 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
I believe if you ever take the time to volunteer, you will realize we are correct, and your assumptions were incorrect. Being homeless and poor is not a case of bad luck, it's a series of bad choices. You can attribute those choices to a number of factors in order take the responsibility off the person, but that doesn't actually benefit anyone, it just helps you signal empty virtues to your shallow, uninformed peers.
[–]number4ty71 point 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Having spent years homeless after leaving the state care system back in the early 1990s I feel I have a wee bit of knowledge on the matter.
If you actually think they are just having "bad luck", then I'm sorry, I just don't believe you. Anyone who works with the homeless knows the truth about the homeless. You're expressing the naive, inexperienced, sjw opinion of someone with zero real world experience.
Listen diddums. Any 'real world experience' I am missing is the cared for, well off, decent upbringing part. I've seen every facet of the bad side of life and then some. I'm still kicking after 40 odd years of it.
I'm no SJW, naivety and inexperience were perhaps relevant when I was 11 but they were left behind the wayside in my teenage years. If you want to discuss this then we can talk but if you want to retreat into your little cave and just throw insults out the door in the hope I will go away then think again.
Most people on the streets have mental health issues, just as most people in our prisons have mental health issues. Some have learning difficulties, some have addictions.
Addiction is a health issue, mental health is a health issue, learning difficulties are a health issue. Health issues can be treated with support. I am living proof of this.
Your attitude and ideals just perpetuate these problems.
Relieving criminals and convicts of personal responsibility now too? This bleeding heart progressivism results in more crime and homelessness. This is because the drug addicts and convicts are smarter than naive liberals like you, and they know how to exploit your shallow, uniformed world view. You've clearly spent zero time around convicts or the homeless. If your 40 and this naive it's just sad, it's far more likely you're a 15 year old who is simply regurgitating what your inexperienced, freshman, sjw, teachers have been teaching you.
[–]number4ty72 points 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
I left school in 1992 darling and we didn't have SJWs back then. When I was in school parents weren't divorced and blacks were people you saw on the 3 tv channels on offer. I've spent years in prison and beaten a few addictions in my time. Been crime free for over 15 years but you keep telling yourself that you know better. I don't really care.
I now to your ignorance, it is truly impressive. In my country you would be rightly laughed at even by conservatives for your puritanical views.
What you call a liberal, we call a centrist and we don't have half the fucking criminals, homeless or junkies that your shithole of a nation has.
[–]uhh__Alex 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Yes, people do choose to have problems. Their priorities are different.
People make mistakes and bad decisions. Refusing to learn from those mistakes can't be blamed on anyone else.
[–]TheJazzProphet 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Do those global standards take cost of living into account? Because you could be a high earner in Eastern Europe and not be able to even afford rent and necessities in parts of America.
Your example backs up my claim....
[–]VaguelyFamiliarMan 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
By some definitions you are part of the middle class in the US if your net worth is zero or greater.
[–]uhh__Alex -1 points0 points1 point 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
That is not at all how that works, pal.
[–]VaguelyFamiliarMan 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link
Tell it to the economists, buddy. There are multiple ways of defining the middle class as opposed to one universally accepted way.
If you define middle class as being neither within the bottom quintile nor the top quintile by net worth then as long as someone doesn't owe more than all their worldly possessions are worth and they aren't unusually well off then they are middle class by that definition. The numbers might have changed a little since the last time I checked but I wager they are still pretty close.
I see multiple definitions.. but not a single one shows being anywhere near your previous claim.
The most accurate definition seems to be Pew researches evaluation: between $46,960 and $140,900.
Pew research is the same company that releases a large majority of statistics for this stuff. I think it's fair to trust their definition.
It seems to me that most define the middle class as above the bottom 10-20% of income and below the top 10-20%.
Neither of those are 0.
Yeah they can, it just takes a little effort.
Most long-term homeless people have some sort of mental problem that prevents them from "getting help" or "take a little effort". Only because you were lucky to have a mostly functioning mind doesn't mean everybody is. Try to consider that when forming your opinion.
[–]mwobuddy 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Is this in canada?
Nobody should be homeless.
[–]EstusFiend 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Wow what a terrible attitude. Do you honestly not care when an adult is homeless? That's really dark, dude. Also no, they can't always get help. The resources for people (adults) to rise up out of poverty are sorely lacking.
[–]dewse 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Putting aside the obvious fact that they are focusing only on one gender when the rest seems to be the most in trouble, it makes me wonder how the hell do homeless women deal with periods. That's kind of a messed up. Anyone here worked at a shelter or whatever that knows this?
[–]VaguelyFamiliarMan 5 points6 points7 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
A while back I read a post from a woman who had spent quite a bit of time being homeless. I can't remember where I saw it but she described living in relative luxury in women's only shelters. Gourmet coffee, expensive foods, fancy makeup, fancy clothes, big screen TV with newly released movies, etc. The women's shelters weren't anywhere close to full. Meanwhile her husband who was also homeless was in a really shitty situation. The shelters he was allowed in were overcrowded, underfunded, smelled like piss, etc.
Someone here can probably find the post. It may have even been in /r/MensRights in another thread about homelessness.
[–]dukunt 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I stayed in a homeless shelter for a few months. It wasn't that bad. There was a unisex common area with a tv and games. I had my own bed a dresser in a room shared by abiut 20 other men. It wasn't great but it wasnt that bad either.
Facepalm.
[–]RubixCubeDonut 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
It'd be a pertinent point if they were trying to remind people of an ignored minority but any stat I've seen suggests that women are disproportionately more likely to receive assistance while homeless.
Just more disgusting misandry.
