Here's the thing. If you're this sensitive to class distinctions, and class consciousness is your primary personality trait, you're almost certainly LMC larping as UMC or UMC larping as UC.

No one else gives a fuck. Poor people are too busy struggling and rich people are too secure in their bubble to think about the people crunched in the middle grinding it out to keep the capitalist class floating above the rest of us.

Actual class systems in America are totally fucked up right now. The upper class has been so busy signaling class status to each other, to desperately try to maintain their grip on status, that they've lost touch with reality. Few people have any respect for the upper class anymore. They are viewed with disdain as kooks living in a bubble. But they still have status as they still have power. Power over the levers of government.

Of course this is nothing new.

Class is absolutely separate from money. No matter how much money I have I will always be gutter class. I will always feel more comfortable at a coke runners party, with ak47s stacked in the corner, joking with the head mule (so high status) then at some bizarre horse dancing event where I'll inevitably end up getting drunk and possibly assaulting some bearded professor, who just can't understand that I do not see him as high status at all. Before getting thrown out as my ex wife smiles inside, fuck you dad, because that's exactly what she wanted to happen.

The true class divide has nothing to do with money. It has to do with language. Do you speak UC? Or do you stand around thinking, omfg these guys are morons. Cause you don't speak the language that a true UC speaks, a language whose first principle isn't "how am I going to hustle this?".

Always fun to realize that you are the butt of the jokes, from noodle armed problem glasses. Who don't even know what a worry is, but they make them up anyway.

I will say though. People do indeed seem to end up, in the end, with someone from their own class. And many a peep will utterly fail to understand that there is no amount of money, or stuff, that will teach you the language of another class.

Personally I'm so much happier with a prole gutter girl. Simply because we speak the same language. Having our MC neighbors over can be a blast. We are obviously gutter class, and I'm so happy to have learned to just accept it.

Plus? We breed.

So, ladies and gentlemen, since economic class is but one factor in overall class, UMC couples could be two teachers in Connecticut, who as a couple pull in 120k. However, it is their social class (the one they were raised in) that determines their overall class.

By your chart adjusted for time, I was raised low to mid-middle class.

I didn't get the hypergamy memo so I married a man who was in the poverty class. He was raised by a single mom on food stamps after his dad dumped off his family for a new one.

So it was LMC female married to Impoverished guy.

And I would not change a thing.

If UMC is 100K and higher for households, according to IPUMS CPS data for 2017.... 44% of America is UMC then (remaining ~1% reserved for UC).

It makes the UMC as big as the WC and LMC in combination (almost).

"Primarily" doesn't mean that's the only factor. Just an important one. That also doesn't include social class or anything else. Most people wouldn't marry someone with bad morals/ethics just because they have a higher wealth than the average person.

It also depends on when you were what class. I was LMC growing up, MC in my 20s, and UMC now in my 30s. I'll probably hit UC in my late 50s but by then I'll be too set in my ways to play their games.

Culturally, I don't like or get along with other UMC people. They come off a spineless, weak, and fake. I have no respect for them.

I relate best with LMC because we grew up the same way. But they have some REAL drama. Like "my boyfriend is in prison for murder" kind of drama. Don't need that in my life.

Naturally, I always dated MC. But on the lower end of the spectrum. That's who I ended up marrying.
