In some societies, such as Confucian societies (China, Japan and S. Korea), there is a procreational/traditional sex culture where premarital sex is considered taboo and lust considered sinful. But at the same time Americanization has caused a recreational sex culture that accepts/encourages premarital sex and considers lust healthy. The two cultures coexist.

In such societies, male sexual inequality may be great because as women are still affected by the procreational/traditional sex culture to a degree, although they may be willing to have premarital sex, they may only consider the most masculine and assertive men as potential partners, totally shutting out less attractive men. However unlike in fully procreational/traditional sex cultures, those men have to wait until about 30 to get married to have sex. Furthermore, the taboo may make those men ashamed of their sexuality and thus decrease their chances even more.
