I am currently on a break with my LTR. Before the break, I was dedicated to being as loving as I possibly could. I would show her the same amount of love whether or not she reciprocated. She usually texted first and cooked for me occasionally, but I was always the one planning dates, doing romantic shit, initiating sex and even initiating cuddles. I would go out of my way just to spend an extra hour or two with her. However, I always wished she would put in more effort. I never asked for this because I didn't want to seem needy.

I decided that we should take a break over summer and she was devastated. I said I needed time to myself to figure some stuff out.

Has asking for effort in a relationship ever worked? Or does it just cause your significant others' attraction to you to decrease when they witness your neediness? Would it be better to keep my list of "what I want in a gf" to myself and use it to screen relationships as they come? Or if I ask will she change? Any success or horror stories are welcome.
