I've never had a strict timeline. I've been in relationships that were commited after a few dates and ones where we were non-exclusive for many weeks.

The sticking factor is if I am ready for commitment but he isn't then I move on. Waiting around for a guy who has made it clear he doesn't want a relationship is for beta women.

It depends on the guy and the relationship. Mr. Paisley was never supposed to be "the one", he was just someone I was hanging out with for the summer until he left town in the fall. A few months after that he came back and we picked up where we left off. Other guys I haven't even had sex with until the relationship was defined and cemented.

I'd say a couple of weeks max. In my experience if a guy likes you and wants a relationship with you he doesn't wait longer than that to lock it down.

I do not go on a 2nd date with someone if I know they are still seeing someone else (between dates, there still lot of communication so he can figure out his direction) By the 3rd date I ask the exclusivity thing, if he is not sure I move on. I only date one person at the time, if in three hours he can not figure if he wants to get to know me better it is a miss.

I do not go further than making out, hugs or holding hands until I get emotionally attached with someone, which on average of a couple months after becomming exclusive.

I started out just wanting to sleep with my guy, I didn't actually expect to be his girlfriend. Then he stuck around for the sex and I became his gf and later his wife. But I would just have been cool banging him.

"defining the relationship" is a weird American idiosyncrasy.

"relationships" here are like friendships in that you don't need to agree on a label to call someone your "SO"; you just do when it meets the generally accepted though vague established definition thereof, like "friend"—the words for "SO" and "friend" are also the same, but when it's grammatically used as an inalienable possession it means "SO" and otherwise "friend".

"commitment" is also a weird American buzzword it seems that has no real meaning; apparently in this topic it means little more than "agreeing upon a label"; in others it means sexual exclusivity; in others yet it means marriage—

suffice to say that I don't really care for any of that, not living in the US; I consider that obsession with labels madness.

If you have not defined the relationship, then what is he committing to? Plus, unless you're married then commitment is basically at this moment in time I am just dating you. But not wanting to define the relationship for more than a short time, gotta dip and think about dating others.
