No, those sentiments are pretty lame. Making people happy is awesome, but you should have (and be focusing on) more relationships than just your romantic one, and endeavour to make everyone who matters to you happy. I definitely wouldn't advocate "building your life" around anyone, you should already have a life that you're happy with before you invite people into it.

They are extremely vague.

Short term happiness is not all that useful, giving a drug addict $100 is not helping anyone.

I think it's important to share the joyous life. Don't make someone happy, make their lives, their entire lives, joyous.

The english language really needs 2 words for "happiness" to differentiate between long term and short term happiness.

I used to believe that happiness stemmed from the happiness of others. Then I made a lot of money in a third world country and realized that sentiment was just shitty line rich people tell poor people to keep them from understanding how crap their lives are.
