We live in a rape hysteria nearly identical to the repressed memory hysteria in the 90's when everyone thought everyone else was a devil worshipping child molester.

We absolutely don't live in a rape culture. I would recommend reading a synopsis of Wendy McElroy's Rape Culture Hysteria. Or just read the book, it's fairly short.

She is a rape survivor and does a very good job of debunking the myth of rape culture.

Rape Culture is a term used to scare people used by extremists and people who want to cash in on the fear and disgust of rape.

I think the people who purvey rape culture are rapists themselves. That's usually how it works with extremists, like those far right wingers that turn out to be closet gay.

'Rape culture,' per the feminist lexicon, defines a culture in which rape is normalized and in which the onus for being sexually assaulted is placed on the victim.

Its impossible to say whether the US as an aggregate is or is not a rape culture. The US has an almost limitless number of intersecting subcultures so different people experience "American culture" differently depending on their background. A girl raised in a marginalized neighborhood or a girl from a transient home environment, for example, is fairly likely to experience rape culture. She's much more likely to be leered and groomed to be used sexually from a young age. She's more likely to be hollered at as soon as she hits puberty, to see her sexuality as her only form of currency, and find herself in dicey situations. A girl raised in a stable, middle class environment is less likely to have experienced rape culture, but that's not to say it doesn't happen.

The funny thing is that rape culture was popularized as a campus issue, which I think does it a disservice. Rape culture is most common among groups of people who have never set foot on a college campus. Sexual assaults do happen at college parties but the majority of them are directly related to the normalization of binge drinking and could be-- theoretically-- prevented if that were to decline.

It's important to note that the concept of rape culture first arose as a critique of how schools, law enforcement, and the media handle sexual assault cases which I think has been a fair critique. The Steubenville case was a major breakthrough in the public awareness of rape culture. Sans intervention nothing would have been done about what was clearly a criminal act. In fact, the perpetrators would have continued to be promoted as star athletes while their bad behavior was swept under the rug.

I think the question-- which none of us can answer-- is whether steubenville was an isolated incident or an example of a common occurrence that just happened to be caught on camera.

It's a term, with a tremendous disjunct between what the nomenclature implies: a culture dominated utterly by, and favorable to rape, and the laughable definition which they ascribe to it: any culture where rape is not reacted to in the way feminists demand.

I think date rape, campus rape, etc are valid topics. But using jargon phrases like "rape culture" devalues the actual issues and leads away from mutually beneficial discussions.

One thing I see in common with both the trp/MRA crowd and the feminist/SJW crowds are that both love to use jargon, acronyms and these memes in a way that does not foster good discussion. To me "rape culture" fits into the category of "AWALT". All these MRA/SJW acronyms and jargon phrases are roughly equivalent to what George Orwell described in Politics and the English Language as dead metaphors.

This passage from Orwell describes most of the MRA/SJW rhetoric I hear from both sides:

I think it's an easy, quick way for feminists to reference violence against women, slut shaming and what they claim are outdated concepts of consent and consent laws.

I don't agree with all of those things and I think it's very obvious that the phrase 'rape culture' was chosen because it

1) causes outrage and brings attention to their cause

and 2) it provides an alternative to 'misogynist' or 'chauvinist' and now you can say someone is a rape apologist or a part of 'rape culture' if they disagree with you.

"Rape culture" is something feminists have to look very hard and through very selective lenses to find evidence of. Its an outdated model of american attitudes towards sexuality which nonetheless continues to be touted as reality despite pretty much everyone condemning rape at every turn.

Its unfortunate that feminists have reacted to the decline of actual rape culture by hysterically redefining things like mutually drunk sex or sex where the female regrets it later as rape. Cant let the rape hysteria die down so we have to scrounge up SOME kind of rape, and fast!

Rape culture is a culture that normalizes sexual agression towards women, excuses it, and or blames victims/women for it.

Feminists say we live in a rape culture because of suspicions of false rape accusations, claims that she was engaging in risky behavior, or that being intoxicated doesn't mean she can't consent. I disagree with them, I think that these are all valid points and any dismissive attitudes in these cases don't carry over to cases that are more black and white.

I also get annoyed when people hone in on the fraction of society expressing opposing views and project those views onto all of society, which feminists and MRAs seem to do I equal parts. Not everyone in society is a feminist that will label a guy a rapist at the drop of a hat.

there are probably many ways to define it but... a culture where women are still held responsible, almost solely, for their rapes, assaults, or any sexual attention that they receive.

women shouldn't ever be in the presence of strangers, especially if they're men.

girls shouldn't wear anything above the knee, with straps, or even just a slight v-neck in school so that boys aren't distracted or harassing her.

women need to stop being drunk around those athletes so they can stay out of trouble and continue on with their oh-so-important contributions to the world.

women who are raped were probably sluts, or secretly wanted it. it's okay; you were just giving her what she really wanted. what's one more time anyway, right?

women need to learn to respond respectfully and politely to any comments they receive from strangers about their appearance. don't be such a bitch.

There is "rape culture" in North America, but we do not live in a rape culture. There are countries around the world where sexual violence as a punishment is the normal thing that happens.

It's sort of a collective thought process that places the responsibility of rape on the victim for doing things that would be considered normal.

For example

If a man is in jail, he drops the soap in the communal shower, and is raped by another inmate (unfortunately) there's a large amount of people who'll say "of course he's going to get raped. what did you think would happen? That's just what happens in prison. Men get raped."

If a man goes out for drinks alone till 2AM those types wouldn't say the same thing(of course he's gonna get raped!) . What was he wearing btw? Skinny jeans?

If a man goes to a party instead and someone slips him a mickey? How terrible(of course he's gonna get raped. He's at a party). The person who put those drugs in his drink might have a bright future ahead of him/her. A couple of years of probation for him/her will set him/her straight.

If a man goes on a date with someone from a website/social network and things end up back at his place. He's experiencing ED and really isn't feeling up to anything sexual. After all, his date was rude to the wait staff. Un/fortunately his date is into butt stuff. He gets anally raped(Of course he's gonna get raped. He brought his date home.) because he brought someone back to his home.

All of this sounds... off.

I'm on my phone and have shut down fever, money money money! But I have time. So, I'm at work here doing the shut down, and I feel there is a decent work culture with the company I have, but the other day was bad. Granted, I wanted to tell my boss to fuck off because he was rushing and was pissed this job wasn't done, and why am I starting another job while one isn't finished.

Because dipshit, people are flying stuff over us on the crane and I can only stay in for a certain amount of time. So I started the other job as well to do that while they're flying stuff overhead.

So, when you have people above you and you have a situation right now where my finances aren't the best, this one asshole can rush people because people are desperate for jobs. Granted, this is the only person who does this. So generally, most people aren't rushed. With that, the safety culture here is halfway decent. People are more mindful because Safety and management talk about any issues with us, and they are generally implemented by the craft.

The issue here is this is going to be long as fuck because the only way to understand rape culture is to understand what a culture is and what goes into it. If you have general foreman like the fuckwit I had to deal with, people can say till the cows come home "don't rush", but actions speak louder then words. So yes, rape is bad, normal people generally know that. But, if you have issues where police don't believe victims and mishandle cases, or judges give little dinky sentences to rapists, it starts to be ingrained in the culture that it's not a big deal.

No one wants to talk about the rushing issue because people don't think it will matter. They don't want to lose their jobs. It becomes a bad safety culture. Women are afraid of disclosing their rape because they don't think it will be believed. It will be a waste of time.

I'm going to continue my break but I could also maybe compare other aspects of a work culture that could negatively effect things in a very small way, but just happen to add up overtime. I might do that later on. But yes, when you hear about rape culture, ask yourself, what is a culture? There are many different cultures in society and there could be issues with definitions.

It is an act of blaming the society and eliminating personal responsibility. Just like feminism.

Being told to not go out dressed in a way certain to attract unwelcome attention? That is victim blaming. Advice to not venture into a dangerous area at night to avoid being mugged? Common sense.

It would be sad enough if that were the extent of it.

However, "rape culture" is now a full fledged assault on male sexuality. On campus kangaroo courts where notions of justice that the rest of the society have been given a toss.

Female capacity and predilection to lie is being weaponized to destroy whatever is left after the war on boys that starts in grade school.

Ultimately, rape culture is like a rolling Kristalnacht of our times as feminists destroy whatever is left of the society to achieve their primary aim of eliminating female responsibility and maximize their social normative power.

It is nothing but cover for a naked power grab.

Not all of them I accept without caveat, but it's a decent overview of the concept. It's not the overdone strawman a few have posted about. And it's not the worst in the US. But that doesn't make it a topic unworthy of discussion. People who belittle the concept casually do themselves a disservice.
