In the few times here I have encountered the abortion debate, I've noticed people draw the line to delineate human life between 'just clump of cells' and 'human being' to the fetus' viability outside the womb. It's not unreasonable given medical technological advances to picture a future in which this line diminishes to nothing - making all fetuses viable. In fact, this future is closer than you may think. We have already grown small animals in artificial wombs. This fundamentally changes the dynamic of the abortion debate as the fetus is viable but no longer inside the body of the woman.

It raises interesting scenarios such as the biological father wanting to raise the child while the mother does not, potentially having the mother pay child support to the father. It also fully negates the bodily autonomy argument because the babies life is no longer dependent on the mother. Having an abortion could merely just mean a transfer to an artificial womb.

I think the debate would merely shift to be about essentially forcing the woman to be a mother.

How do you think the debate around abortion would change regarding this future? Would it even change? What is your take? What would be the feminist take?

Doctors at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia are in talks with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to begin testing artificial wombs on human embryos within the next two years, according to Metro. If they’re successful, the research could radically change the way we view pregnancy, childbirth, and perhaps even human evolution.

In addition to changing the abortion debate, it would radically change how women plan their lives. Women would no longer be held to a biological clock. What changes do you foresee in dating dynamics if women are no longer held to a fertility window?

Furthermore, it raises ethical concerns regarding accessibility and equality. Only the well-off will be able to afford the technology, at least initially. This along with gene modification would create a class 'super-babies' selected for health, high IQ, etc.. creating a class divide. How will this will play out in our political theater? I suspect more equality-minded people essentially becoming Luddites in the face of the technological advancement of the human species.
