Unfortunately it's not like that at all. What wasn't depicted was the lawyers and court battles. In the end this is usually how it goes.
My ex and I split 9 years ago. She took my kid and moved back to her hometown in California to be with "the love of her life". This was during a period where I was working 50 hours a week and taking a full course load to finish a Bachelor's in Mechanical Engineering. I was doing all of it to better my family, but it meant I was working 6 days a week, and studying almost every minute I had. I did my best to make time for my daughter and my ex, but it wasn't enough for her.
I never gave her permission to take my kid out of state. At that point in my life I had been spending every dollar I had on my daughter and our family, and I didn't have money for a lawyer, but her parents did. I got completely raked through the coals and slammed with so much child support and alimony that I could never afford to go see my child (Orange County CA is not exactly a cheap place to visit).
Every other year she tries to have custody of my daughter removed because she insists that I don't spend any time to see her, and she tries to paint me as some fucking crazy that's a threat to my kid. Mind you I am a professional engineer, decorated Iraq veteran, Eagle Scout, etc. I've never been arrested. I've never been admitted. I've never been addicted to anything in my life. Yet she and her attorney find ways to try to paint me as some drunk junkie psychopath. Last year I spent $7000 on an attorney to fight my case, on top of $1400 a month in child support. Meanwhile she has my daughter calling her new man "Dad".
The whole thing is a fucking trap. I'm looking forward to 7 years from now when my daughter turns 18. The good news is that even though she's been brainwashed to hate me, she doesn't. I'm allowed to call her twice a week and she's always excited to talk to me and see me. I really hope she understands what really happened 9 years ago, and how much I love her.

Start making peace with it brother. 90% of thetime statistically women get awarded children and child support. She will play victim and feel entitled to every dollar the government tells her she is "due". She will use the child as a pawn.
I hope this doesnt happen but its way to common you can ask any father and they all have the same story. Being in this situation the last 5 years Ive yet to meet a man that ever said the ex was fair or a good person. They all have that deep dark sadness in their eyes when you can see them think about what they have gone through and they dont even need to tell their story because its the same one we all have heard a million times.
Thats how you can tell the difference. Women will go on and on trying to sell their story of the break up and guys just wont even bother bearing their soul to share it because its all just so fucking painful they will just get that look on their face and say something short like, "I know your pain, it sucks."
We are helpless and we know there is nothing that will change it any time soon.

Sorry you went through that. I can relate. Mine wasn't as bad, and when our oldest out of 3 turned 12 she wanted to live with me. Hated her mom. It changed everything. Next thing you know, the courts start wondering why and I was able to talk the other 2 into moving in with me. She still owes me 7 years back child support. It was years ago. I got lucky. Work on your daughter. Maybe she'll want to live with you. Good luck.

That's my dream. That's my hope everyday. I always tell my daughter how proud I am of her, and how she's so smart and beautiful. I love her more than I ever knew I could love anyone. My ex remarried (tried to keep the alimony too which I had to fight) and has a 2 year old with her new husband. I know for a fact that they are neglecting my daughter in favor of the baby they had together. I really hope that she realizes how important she is to me and how she is my life. She's the only child I'll ever have, and I'd do anything for her.
There was a period of 2 years when I was completely cut off from my kid. I did everything I could to try to get her back or just be able to talk to her, but I couldn't afford a lawyer and my ex is completely heartless so I was completely alienated. This caused serious damage to my child and our relationship.
She still calls me "Wes" and her step father "Dad". She still refuses to reciprocate when I tell her that I love her. I try to understand that it's the years of the alienation of parental affection working against me... but it would be nice to hear my daughter say "I love you, Daddy".

I went through very similar. Thanks for sharing the story its important to let these young men know not to make the same mistakes. You simply cant trust a woman when she want to get married and have kids bc they are not showing you their true colors. At least date for about 7 years before even thinking you know her well enough she wont change but still its to high of a risk and having the world against you and steal your children is pain you simply cannot imagine until you go through it. If i say publicly that men should have SOME say in this i get told “dont have sex if you dont want to deal with it”, yet that same argument is NEVER said to a woman if they push for legalization of abortions at any stage in the pregnancy. And all this controversy is before they are even born. Men have zero value as fathers in this society besides the punching bag of jokes. Sitcoms like modern family where the dad is a bumbling idiot that is lucky to have his spouse is so common compared to just 20 years ago.
The more you see and the more you hear the worse it gets. There is no justice. Meanwhile go on any social media and type in the search bar “men” and the top 5 suggested topics are horrible. We have become the bad guys in an age where we should be supported the most. #metoo made men weary of being alone with women at the workplace, and women complained that it was yet another glass ceiling/disadvantage that harms them!
There was an all-female company created. That fact alone wouldnt be allowed legally if it was the other gender. The company shut down within 2 years directly due to the issues that arose because it was all women. I’ve gone to managers and asked for an application to be told “dont bother, we dont hire men”. Yet when i go online and make a comment like this one that points out hypocrisy towards my half of the world i get told that im the problem or that i am too dumb/uneducated to be able to grasp the REAL issues cuz its soooo much worse for women.
It just gets worse and worse. I could rant about this for days, in this comment ive only scratched the surface. We havent even talked about workplace injuries, suicide figures, longer sentences for the same crime, harsher treatment in the military, higher standards for success and etc. etc. etc.

Can someone explain common law marriage to me? Even when I look it up it isn’t clear.
It’s basically, if I, a man, have a woman I am dating live with me, set her ID to my address, and set her mail to my address, for a certain length of time, the government will eventually literally assume we are together and then consider us together as far as the law is concerned. Meaning if we break up she will be entitled to those things.
But reading doesn’t say any important specifics. It does read like the government just assumes.
What if I have a male roommate or best friend and we split bills? What if the woman is my sister? What if she’s not but we just aren’t dating?
Does the government assume everyone is together if they live together and thus are entitled to the others belongings if they separate?
I honesty can’t find any info on how common law works in those cases, or really how it works at all.
Seems like a dating couple would have to purposely do something for the government to assume they are together. As long as they don’t do that, then neither would be entitled to the others stuff and all.
Any clarifications you can offer?

Yeah they have no fault divorce and basically if the two of you can settle up who gets what, you just file with the judge. If they think everything looks fair and equitable the judge just declare you divorced. Heck I never saw a court room just the filing office.
Three advantages:
Its cheap.
If you agree on most everything it's easy.

I found a note in my exes car of her lawyers scribbling to direction of a womens battered shelter with other evidence of the steps she needs to do. Get a PPO on there was one of them.
The only physical abuse that ever occurred was her hitting me but fuck the women who actually do get hurt as long as they can abuse the system to get theirs.
Women that do this are the lowest cunts on the planet. They give women a bad name and make it so real victims have a hard time getting people to believe them.

This is so insanely inaccurate. In contested divorce court EVERYTHING is backed up by documentation and police reports. You can’t just “lie” and “make up” things without proof. Any attorney/judge who’s worth anything knows that. And also divorce is governed by state laws NOT federal laws. Comments like these are the reason people don’t try to fight for what’s theirs. Knowing your legal entitlements and your rights is just as important as having an experienced legal team.

You can start by not letting the desk stack against you. Three of my siblings went through divorces and some of the red flags were so huge you could see them from space.
You have to remember that divorce stats are impacted by people being divorced multiple times. Last I remember the divorce rate in the US for first time marriages was only around 25%. The overall rate is around 50%.
