Occasionally I do see men my age (26) giving up their seats to women the same age on my crowded bus going into work in the morning. And every time I think..... there's no way that I would do that lol.

If she was pregnant, of course, or like a very old person. But I just don't see the point. Maybe I'm selfish, or just not a gentleman. But I wanna sit god damnit, what's the point of giving my seat to someone else just cuz they're a girl..

34m here. This situation has literally never happened to me in my life. Nor has it happened to any of my male friends.

My first thought was that OP is from a non-english speaking country that may have certain laws specifically governing this sort of thing. Digging through the comments, I found this comment from OP:

I being one who travels in public commute everyday you would be surprised how much this happens. I am from India and here as per rules 33% seats are already reserved for women. Add to that seats reserved for handicapped, elders and patients, overall reserved seats quota goes upwards of 60% of total seats available in any public transport. And on top of that, women can sit 'anywhere' they feel like but men cant sit on seats reserved. So you can guess how much of seats are left for us.

This was the first time I'd heard of this, so I did some research:

Studies from across the world have pointed out that safety is a major concern for women in public transport. A 2015 survey of 493 female bus passengers in Bangalore, conducted by faculty at the MS Ramaiah Institute of Management and others, found that half the women surveyed had faced sexual harassment in buses. Awkward touch by conductors and co-passengers was a common issue, along with theft. But only 0.09% had ever filed a police complaint.

The women either believed that their complaint would not be addressed, or that the process would be cumbersome without any real results. Since sexual harassment cases are usually trivialised, such cynicism may not be misplaced at all.

The situation forces women to either silently suffer, or to shift to other transport modes, the survey finds. Thirty nine percent of the women who had faced problems, had stopped using buses altogether.

[...] Lack of safe public transport also has a much bigger and obvious implication. For a majority of women, safe public transport is a precondition for accessing education, jobs etc. Recent studies have shown that lack of safety, including in public transport, is a major reason for the declining work participation of Indian women. The problem is amplified by lack of last mile connectivity and street harassment.

TL;DR it appears there is a reserved seating law for public transportation in India, which is an effort by Indian authorities to combat sexism and sexual harrassment and help women feel safer on public transportation.

While I can understand OP's frustration, I can also see how a government might implement a law like this if sexual harrassment is so pervasive on public transportation in India that authorities feel there's no other choice but to have separate seats for women. Not an ideal solution, but I understand the reasoning.

Edit: apparently it's poorly enforced as well.

I'm disabled and I've had People say "I'm older than you. You should give up your seat". Really? You're only old because you avoided dying for another year. Just because my disability isn't visible, doesn't mean it ain't a valid one. I suffer from nerve damage and suicide headaches on a daily basis. My bones are eroding and there's a fucking bone shard in my brain threatening to kill me if I fucking fart to hard... Piss off you useless old cunt!

I give my seat for;

The elderly. (If you’re crotchety and a grouch I’ll take my time getting up.)

The visibly impaired/disabled. (I know this sounds horrible, but only if it looks like you need to sit.)

Parents with the babies. (Some kids don’t quit and you just want a seat. I feel that.)

Pregnant. (Even then it has to be noticeable, I don’t want my seat pilfered.)

Then only if I feel like it. When I work, I’m on my feet all day or crouching.

Sure it ain’t an overly exhaustive job, but my legs get tired. I am sure as sugar am making those school kids who sit for 5hours a day move over if they’re hogging a seat.

Happened to me yesterday, as I got into the subway, I sat my ass real quick into the first seat I could get wich happened to be the one right next to the door (I ride this subway to the terminal so I most of the times I'll be justified to use a seat). right as I sit down a lady wich was right behind me straight up got in my face and asked "can I sit?" with a scowl. Since I only give seats to people with disability and old people, otherwise it's first come first served I just asked "Do you have any disabilities?" wich she imediately answered with "Do I need a disability?" getting annoyed and shooting me daggers. I said "well yeah?" and she just moved on. She seemed totaly healthy and just a bit overweight, so nothing preventing her from standing. Entitled people smh..

This doesn’t really happen in real life. Women don’t demand to be given a seat because they are women, and even if you claim to experience it, it’s not representative of the entire female population OR feminism. You know what I see more often? Douchey people spreading out on a seat and then ignoring it when elderly people or pregnant women are standing next to them. They always ask politely for a seat, and are often ignored.

So to the (possibly underage) members of this thread that insist feminism is allowing women to act entitled and your fantasy world includes the anecdote where a woman demanded that you give your seat to them, chiggity-check yourself before you wreck yourself.
