Literally going out of their way to create an argument out of thin air.

Dude is a unisex term these days.

And not by movement/campaigning.

It just casually evolved to encompass women since many are dude-worthy.

Am I wrong for thinking people shouldn't get so butt hurt by words? While I understand there are better words to use then the following I don't think you should be upset by people using them.

Dude...doesn't mean just a male for most people now in days.

When one guy says to another, Man stop being gay or you're such a fag. That isn't saying there anything wrong about homosexuals it's only a dumb diss between two guys who's biggest fear is to be less manly. While I'm not gay I always kinda assumed if I was I wouldn't care about being a stereotypical man so who cares not everything is for everyone.

Retard is another word that shouldn't be so offensive. Again I'm not saying these are the best words to be used but I think it's just retarded and gay when one dude calls out another dude for using these words. Seriously people need stop being little fags and getting offended by WORDS.

Also it should be noted I have a gay friend and a retarded one so I can use these words....also it should be noted I'm a white male in his early 30s so that probably voids everything I just said so instead just enjoy this my theme song

Same when you say "Hey, guys", it doesn't refer just to males.

It can also be used in the same way as 'man' when you say "Oh, man, my back hurts". You can use 'man' when talking to a woman in that sense, because it's an exclamation of discomfort, not a way to address the listener.

Oh, also, reference. You gotta have references.

[–]ePants 22 points23 points24 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Same when you say "Hey, guys", it doesn't refer just to males.

It's even worse when people try to make an issue of "mankind."

"Man" and "mankind" have completely different origins.

How many feminists does it take to screw in a light bulb?

Just one to hold the bulb while everyone else revolves the world around her.

[–]NinjaLanternShark 3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

How many feminists does it take to screw in a light bulb?

They don't need any lightbulbs because the glass ceiling lets in plenty of light.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]dslybrowse 22 points23 points24 points 9 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Same with "guys". I ask my girlfriend "what are you guys up to tonight" when she's hanging out with exclusively other women! Unfortunately I think a lot of 'feminists' and/or people looking for a fight see this in the wrong light.

Whereas I might think "you are being welcomed under a previously exclusive term" and it's kind of a positive outlook, they might interpret it as "you are forcing your term onto us and eradicating our terms". Which is I guess a valid way of looking at it, but I don't think it's the best one.

[–]ComradeRedditor 9 points10 points11 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I had a female teacher flame me for using the term "you guys," because 'not everyone in the class is a guy.' I'd say I'm a feminist tbh, but after having someone talk down to me for that I can understand why people hate feminists.

Grammar policing doesn't make people agree with you, it makes them hate you.

[–]accipitradea 9 points10 points11 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

next time say, "you guys and hos" to make it better.

[–]FuncuzCapt-Save-A-Ho 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]Albert_Caboose 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It all comes down to looking for a fight, pretty much. I once held the door for a girl in high school and she started talking about how it was sexist because I presuming she was unable to do it on her own. I replied, "uh, no, I just saw someone else coming so I held the door. It's what you do."

What's worse is that if I hadn't held it, that would have been sexist too.

The other day I posted a comment on a meme that pretty much said if healthcare is a right then the government should pay for our guns too seeing as those are a right, and all I said was healthcare is more of a necessity than guns because you can live without a gun. This chick then replies "you can't live without a gun if you're being attacked." Here's how it went from there Me: well yea you can, there's other ways to fight someone off if you don't have a gun. Her: Get TF outa here. I'm 5'3" and disabled how am I supposed to fight? Me:1) not everyone on the internet is going know you're disabled 2) most people are going to be able to fight some other way. Her: you're just proving my point and that's why we shouldn't ban guns. Me: okay. Clearly you need to reread what I wrote because nowhere did I say anything about banning guns. Quit making up conflicts to inject yourself into something.

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points9 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

not everyone on the internet is going know you're disabled

tbf you should have known she was at least somewhat disabled by that retarded comment she made beforehand.

[–]I_RARELY_RAPE_PEOPLE 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yea I agree there. People can't use anecdotal evidence to back up why something should be government controlled, especially when they are a rare circumstance.

[–]CDisawesome 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You are correct, you don't need a gun to defend yourself. However having a gun is more of a right, as guns are property, than healthcare, which is a service.

[–]Mensenvlees 27 points28 points29 points 9 years ago (22 children) | Copy Link

What the hell does the etymology of the word have to do with how it's used now. It doesn't matter at this point. That's just making up a reason for not liking the word.

[–]MISKREANT1234 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yea I call my friends niggas cuz they is mah niggas , not calling them from the root word. Words have progressed farther than our minds have I guess.

[–]bannable01 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Right, that'd be like walking around calling everyone a fag just because the actual definition is "bundle of sticks". The definition doesn't matter when society has assigned a new definition to the word. Dictionaries are slow to catch up.

[+][deleted] -14 points-13 points-12 points 9 years ago (19 children) | Copy Link

Unfortunately, you are correct; we have lost meaning for usage these days.

But, dude, you like being called, "dude", dude?

[–]TheOneTonWanton 14 points15 points16 points 9 years ago (17 children) | Copy Link

Usage of words changes over time, it's just the nature of language. If language never changed we'd all be speaking fucking latin or some shit, or at the very least Old English. Do you ever use the words awesome, awful, terrific, bully, or fantastic? Because all of those words mean very different things to us now than they did at their creation, much the same as "dude."

[–]skooba_steev 3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I don't speak Old English, I only drink it

[+][deleted] -11 points-10 points-9 points 9 years ago (15 children) | Copy Link

Awesome doesn't mean "full of awe"?

Awful was originally another word entirely, "agheful". Etimology is an effective way of finding the true meaning of words, that is what concerns me, not usage.

[–]TheOneTonWanton 6 points7 points8 points 9 years ago* (14 children) | Copy Link

You literally just posted about how we have lost meaning for usage, I don't see how that implies that usage is of no concern to you. And sure, awesome still retains the definition of full of awe, but it is used in ways that in no way implicate actual awe for the thing being described. People wear "awesome" shirts and do things like eat "awesome" burgers all the time, but the "full of awe" definition doesn't exactly fit there. Very rarely will you hear of the "awesome" power of a hurricane or similarly actually awe-inspiring things.

[–][deleted] -3 points-2 points-1 points 9 years ago (13 children) | Copy Link

Most people have lost meaning for usage (please pardon the generalization); I mean, how many out there keep saying Apocalypse this, Apocalypse that. Do you know what it means? Usage is what you learn from conversations with simpletons; meaning is what you get when you study etymology or converse with intellectuals.

The full of awe definition fits perfectly. You are in awe of the cool shirt; in awe of the taste of the burger.

[–]QueefChiefKeith 16 points17 points18 points 9 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

/r/iamverysmart and an unbearable twat

[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points0 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Agreed. It is difficult living in a world that includes you.

[–]craze4ble 7 points8 points9 points 9 years ago* (5 children) | Copy Link

This has /r/iamverysmart written all over it.

Usage is not something you learn from conversation with simpletons. There are branches of linguistics that explicitly study the usage of words. All (living) languages evolve, and the meanings of words can change, and this is because both "simpletons" and "intellectuals" (whatever your definition for these terms is) start using it in a different way. And meaning is not what you get when you study etymology. The meaning of a word consists of both its etymology and its current usage. You never, or at least seldom hear the word "gay" used in it's original meaning (carefree) anymore, as it has taken up a new meaning. Same with originally medical terms like "stupid", "retarded" etc. that all used to indicate levels of mental disabilities, but since they became insults in colloquial language medical professionals started using new terms.

The full of awe definition fits perfectly. You are in awe of the cool shirt; in awe of the taste of the burger.

It could fit perfectly, but it doesn't. People are not full of awe because of the shirt or the burger, they just like it. "Awesome" in colloquial use became a synonym to "very nice" or "very good".

[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points0 points 9 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Faulting me on a typo... That is /r/iamverysmart, or /r/pettyrevenge? haha

At any rate, the meaning of the word is the meaning of the word. Usage is not a component. Since civilizations tend to devolve, usage often replaces meaning in the general populace because we forget the originally intended purpose of the word/idea/etc. "Gay" is a perfect example of this process, thank you. "Retarded" is used properly still; one that is slower or slows another.

And yes, if someone is saying "awesome", they are in awe, by definition. This, too, is a great example of how we tend to degenerate in understanding. Like the Muslims who stumbled upon the Pyramids, most people stumble into their languages and mess them up, my nigga.

[–]CrochetCrazy 4 points5 points6 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

You might want to check our Wittgenstein's language game theory. You might find it interesting.

You have to be careful assuming that intellectual or formal language is the only correct one. It is a type of language often used in academic setting but it is in no way the "correct" form. Language is heavily cultural and is constantly in Flux. A linguist will tell you to consider your audience when using language. Reddit is not a formal setting, nor should it be.

It's great that you care enough to learn about the history of word usage but just be mindful of your audience here.

As a side note. I'm still bitter about literally now meaning both literal and figurative. Society... why you do dis?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Thank you! I would hesitate to use "correct", but try to use, rather, "originally intended meaning".

Society is cray...

[–]timechuck 23 points24 points25 points 9 years ago (19 children) | Copy Link

Implying a joke about the stereotypical woman with that hair style. I feel YOURE being sexist in assuming im sexist, when in fact Im just an asshole reaching for low hanging fruit.

[+]mightbedylan -9 points-8 points-7 points 9 years ago (18 children) | Copy Link

"Stereotypical woman with that hair style" But that IS sexism. That's like the most legitimate form of sexism. The post in OP is dumb reaching feminism I agree.

Haha, how is that sexist?

[–]timechuck 11 points12 points13 points 9 years ago (17 children) | Copy Link

The exact same way a joke that was meant to play on a joke stereotype is sexist. I agree if real statements of that nature with real feeling behind them are sexist, but a joke playing towards that? I think that's a little weak. I make horrible jokes about everything including Jews, but I wouldn't say in a Nazi because I do it.

[–]mightbedylan 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (16 children) | Copy Link

I don't understand how that relates to me being sexist? I wasn't making any comment relating to gender?

Further I don't believe you were truly making a joke and rather an observation. I'm not so much of a prude to call out someone for truly joking about sensitive subjects and am on the boat that taking comments like that too seriously is actually damaging to sexism.

But just making a casual comment on assuming the 'type' of woman she is because she has that kind of hair cut seems obviously sexist. Sure it's not very aggressive but hey, little steps.

[–]mcyaco 8 points9 points10 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

No it doesn't seem obviously sexist. It does however seem like a stereotype. But stereotypes do not equal sexism. If someone makes a comment that a muscular man must be a jock, that's not sexism. That's stereotyping.

[–]mightbedylan 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Seems the same as calling a woman with that haircut a bitch, no? It's a stereotype based on gender which is sexist.

It's not like those are mutually exclusive terms. Stereotypes can be, and usually are, the basis of most -isms

[–]timechuck 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (12 children) | Copy Link

It must be very liberating to be able to judge people simply by a joke on the internet. You obviously missed the part of my original comment where I didn't make any gender stereotype comments, more a comment on a hairstyle. How tiring is it during the day for you to jump to so many conclusions?

[–]mightbedylan 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

Judge people? I'm not judging you. I very much doubt you are truly a sexist person, I don't think most people are. But that's kind of the whole deal behind what I think is the true heart of the current social justice movement, avoiding this kind of accidental/casual sexism.

And yes in your comment you are directly commenting on gender stereotypes. "You can tell be her haircut what type of woman she is". It's obvious what's being implied by that. Otherwise what would a comment on someone's hair have anything to do with a post like this?

Again I certainly don't at all think it was intentionally sexist, or that it's even very damaging. Just seems like an unnecessary comment and was sexism on the most basic level.

The more you know and what not.

[–]mightbedylan 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

"Yeah you can tell by that butch haircut of hers she's a real bitch"

Would you say that sentence is sexist?

[–]_The_Pi_ 3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]iHeartCandicePatton 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

[–]AndrewCarnage 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Exactly. I dare anyone to watch 2 hours straight of some "golden age" children's programming (whatever era you think that is... probably amazingly coincedentally around when you were 5-15) and see how great it is. You're going to get bored even though kid you could watch hours of that shit every day.

[–]Plebiathan58 3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

To be fair, the Nick shows of the 90's were incredibly well written for any audience. If you go back and watch shows like Rugrats, Hey Arnold, Rocko's Modern Life, Ren & Stimpy, or Doug you're likely to find there's plenty of mature humor that sailed way over your head in your youth.

[–]jakeairforce 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yes but back then they went beyond the demographic in their greatness, I still watch good burger at times and the occasional rugrats episodes that turn up from my collection of DVDs.

I'd honestly rather see actual PPD content every once in a while than shit like this. It's funny and a great reply but it's not what this sub is for.

[–]jakeairforce 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I see your point but at the same time the sub doesn't have to have such specific parameters, the occasional true PPDs are made better by the, albeit funny, "shit posts" that don't follow the initial nature of the sub.

[–]Raging_bull_54 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

But I'm not on /r/lolwomenarealwayswrong, I can go on the woman hating subs for that. I'm on pussypassdenied, I want to see the pussy pass be denied!

[–]TheBlueBlaze 8 points9 points10 points 9 years ago (15 children) | Copy Link

Because this sub is looking for every excuse to rag on SJWs

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

By SJWs I think you mean women.

Every time I see this sub show up on all it seems to simply be something against women in general.

Anyone who posts here claiming not to be a misogynist needs to take a good hard look at themselves.

Basically, this sub is becoming /r/JusticePorn with the targets limited to women...

[+]iHeartCandicePatton -9 points-8 points-7 points 9 years ago (13 children) | Copy Link

Why is that a problem?

[–]TheBlueBlaze 8 points9 points10 points 9 years ago (12 children) | Copy Link

The sidebar describes this sub as "where women are not allowed to use their gender as a handicap or an excuse to act like assholes". This is not a woman using her gender as a handicap or an excuse. It's just a SJW talking point being said by a woman.

By saying that the women don't have to bring up their gender in order for the post to be valid, then this sub is not only being anti-SJW. It's implying that only women are SJWs, and that them being "denied" is them being told off, while implying that they're driven by a motivation that has no proof of existing.

I won't deny that some women will use their gender as an excuse for the shitty things they do. But to assume that they would if given the chance is attributing original sin to any woman who dares to be liberal.

[–]iHeartCandicePatton -3 points-2 points-1 points 9 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link

Why is that a problem?

My question still stands

[–]TheBlueBlaze 5 points6 points7 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Well, if you want to get into the grand scheme of things, it's a problem because anti-SJWs like to take the extreme side of social justice ("kill all men", "did you just assume my gender?", "if you're white, you're racist", "if you're male, you're sexist", etc.) and say that they represent the entirety of the social justice movement.

It's a problem because when you look for excuses to rag on a group, you begin to see them more and more as an enemy to be defeated rather than people who simply disagree with you. You get antagonistic with them, only seeing their worst examples and pushing them to the forefront of your mind. This sub, by not requiring the women in the posts to actually use their gender as a defense or excuse, makes its content more antagonistic towards women in general. People who read this stuff more and more start to believe that every woman is willing to use their gender to their advantage. They convince themselves not only that women are more willing and able to play the victim card, but because they themselvs aren't as able, that they are the true victims. At some point, when they look at a member of that group, they no longer see them as an individual, but as just another member of that group they've built up in their mind as both an imminent threat and a pathetic bunch of whiners.

I'm not saying this happens all at once. I'm saying that assuming a woman will use their gender as a safety net, despite there being no proof that that particular one will do so, it starts to breed a dangerous mindset.

[–]iHeartCandicePatton -1 points0 points1 point 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

It's a problem because when you look for excuses to rag on a group

That's where your theory falls flat. I don't need to look for an excuse. There are plenty out there in plain sight.

Not only that but however many millions of years of reproduction happening in a 1g environment (on the fucking ground) doesn't necessarily give us a great shot anywhere else lol

So, can someone tell me honestly:

This sub is supposed to be about women trying to get away with doing certain things simply due to the fact that they're women, so how exactly does a short twitter exchange fall under that?

I mean, people say this sub is misogynist because of shit like this getting upvoted simply because the person who got burnt is female.

It's almost like people here just like to post about women being burned...I wonder why that is...

I generally like this sub but I have to agree. More and more frequently I'm seeing posts like this where it's just sort of a "haha he sure showed that dumb bitch" vibe and that's hardly A. Woman using pussy as an excuse or "pass" or B. That being denied. It's not nearly as satisfying as the legit PPD posts, which I love, as I'm a woman who actually does believe in equality.
