Totally. The un-PC reality that a lot of people don't want to acknowledge is that women's strategy for getting what they want is to pressure, guilt, or coerce men into getting it for them. A lot of women don't like getting their hands dirty in many realms of life and a lot of the time, they don't have to.

People are comparing this woman to men and saying, "hey, it's not so bad, at least she didn't literally go over to the guys house and physically push him into the exhaust-filled car!" No fucking shit. That's not how women operate. And for a woman, this chicks behavior is indicative of an incredibly malevolent, evil personality who is likely to coerce and deceive other men into hurting themselves or doing bad things down the line.

She absolutely killed this guy and she did so by taking advantage of female privilege to get what she wanted out of a man. I don't think she should get away with that.

I mean, I hate this lady. I think she is a disgusting piece of shit, and from an emotional standpoint I want her to be imprisoned for decades and tortured to death....but I don't think our legal system should do that. I think 15 months is mostly fair for a first offense like this tbh.

Read the actual transcript.

There is no substitute for the original source. This is not amorphous "outside influences." This is a young woman arguing, demanding, and cajoling a disturbed man who did not want to kill himself into killing himself.

This has nothing to do with free speech and nothing to do with the intent or spirit of the first amendment.

From the 1969 Brandenburg v. Ohio Supreme Court case on criminal incitement:

Advocacy of force or criminal activity does not receive First Amendment protections if (1) the advocacy is directed to inciting or producing imminent lawless action, and (2) is likely to incite or produce such action.[2]

Based on the transcript of texts, I would argue that the directness of much of this young woman's demands of the young man to kill himself would easily qualify as imminent, but certainly her messages to him as he was literally getting out of the suffocating car to get back in would refer to as imminent an act as humanly possible.

Now, is suicide illegal? No. Not in the U.S. But if incitement to imminent violence on a third party is criminal, surely incitement to violence towards the person being communicated with should also be illegal. By the same logic:

If it's illegal to tell Person A to kill Person B, it should be just as illegal to tell Person A to kill Person A. For the simple reason that what is being criminalized is inciting violence. If you believe someone can be susceptible enough to kill a third party based on someone inciting them to do so, it follows that someone could be susceptible enough to kill themselves based on someone inciting them to do so. In each case, the inciter has caused violence that would not otherwise occur.

So, based on legal precedent and sound logic, I think it is highly reasonable that this woman was incarcerated. I think she committed a terrible act. I think you would have a much different reaction if this was a teenage guy on trial for badgering some teenage girl repeatedly to commit suicide (and her going through with it despite reservations)

Our justice system fails now for throwing people into jail for 25 years on minor crimes, teaching them to hate the system then releasing them to reoffend because our “efforts” to rehabilitate them failed miserably.

I understand your feelings but this girl was/is a child. She convinced him to commit suicide which some will equate to murder but personally I feel it’s about a notch or two below murdering someone with your own hands. It’s a different type of sadistic. One I believe can reform and the other not so much. She’s experiencing jail and I guarantee you it’s not fun. A little over a year and I think it’s just enough time to reconsider all your decisions and change. After multiple years I don’t believe it’s so easy to lead a stand-up life.

She’s been given a golden opportunity here no doubt but I really do believe it’s a fair punishment if the end goal is having her change her ways. Will she? Who knows, we’ll find out.

I couldn’t feel worse for the family..... if you asked me to say these same words in front of their faces, I don’t think I could do it. But objectively I believe what I’ve said here to be true.

Wouldn't every criminal say "Oh I didn't know he was armed" when asked about it, if the law allowed them to get away as long as they "didn't know".

The reasonable assumption is that burglary by multiple people is a planned affair, and its reasonable that everyone knows what weapons they are carrying, and have some escape / contingency plans.

3 people just walking down a sidewalk don't just jump into a house to commit burglary in the US, and that too without any weapons... that's too much risk of getting shot by the home owner.

It doesn't really matter to the prosecution what the OP or the defendants said... in this particular instance, it doesn't matter what the truth is, unless the truth can be established by concrete proof - not just the words of the defendants. The overwhelming possibility is that everyone knew that Bill had a weapon, and they were planning to use it in case they were going to get caught or shot - and now, they are lying to avoid getting a murder rap against their names.

You are glossing over the facts here. Not only did she encourage him to kill himself, but was texting with him while he was doing it. When he expressed doubts and actually got out of the carbon monoxide filled vehicle, she ordered him to go back in and finish the job. It was this text that the judge pointed to as a depraved act contrary to Massachusetts state law, which she was prosecuted for, found guilty by a unanimous jury, and finally affirmed by the state's highest court. The state is sending a message that it will not tolerate behavior that treats human life so recklessly. While there has been some opposition to Carter's prosecution, most people supported it. She will still be 23 when she gets out next year, plenty of time to build a life, while he's dead, and his family will miss him forever, but at least they can be happy she paid some price.

I still find it incredibly unfair that she was charged and convicted for this. I get it, she is a scumbag, but the guy was already suicidal and I just have a hard time blaming somebody for somebody else’s suicide. It’s a slippery slope when we convict people of violent crimes when they actually didn’t commit any violent acts just. She offended us. Nothing more.
