The qualification argument doesn't even make sense even if it were true all current senators and congressmen were truly the most qualified people to run the country.

The house is supposed to be a representative assembly and that term representative is key. I know that just means people elect representatives to argue for their interests in their behalf, but I believe the assembly should represent the people.

How could the house truly represent all the concerns of various communities of minorities both racial, sexual, and those in different socioeconomic classes, let alone women, if it were entirely composed of well-off white men?

Kirsten Gillibrand isn't getting denied here. She's the junior senator from New York, the senior being Chuck Schumer. She's just paying lip service to her supporters, ie women. She doesn't care what some rando on Twitter says. She is very much about PR and getting her name/brand out there. I would not be surprised if she's gearing up for a presidential run in the relatively near future (or she just doesn't want to lose her seat).

In my experience groups of women usually don't get along all that well. The fighting my wife has described over the years at her current and past job is just ridiculous. She doesn't even have many female friends because of how awful they can be. I don't imagine it being any different in Congress just because they would be educated women.

Just two days ago I was commenting on TwoXChromosomes about how companies should hire based on merit rather than what's between their legs. It makes sense. Hire people that are the most skilled and your company will be fine.

But you still gotta admit there are some people that dont vote for women simply because they're women. Although it's not In the massive amounts that people make it out to be. America as a whole isn't a sexist country.

God damn fuck this subreddit. What if men weren't inherently better than women, and systematic issues throughout society prevent women from obtaining the majority of positions of power. This is so myopic.

Time and time again I've seen people give me more respect and defer to me for leadership compared to my equally or more talented female counterparts just cause I'm a tall athletic guy. And then when I apply for my next job, oh wow I have all of this extra stuff, and if I were a god damn jerk off Id think it was because I'm so much more "qualified," when being a fuckin tall male has nothing to do with how good of a surgeon someone is. This presumes that the electoral system is perfectly meritocratic, which is obviously not true. Correcting the system on behalf of women and minorities has a net positive effect on the quality of people elected because the people bumped are less qualified men/white people. And the diversity of experience improves the quality of ideas. This has been studied.

Senator Gillibrand was pointing out a lack of female representation. The Tyson guy said something about hiring the "most qualified people," presumably in opposition to the idea that we should care about female representation. Well if that's Tyson's point, then his "point" is a non sequitor. There are a couple things wrong with it.

The goal of hiring for Congress is not solely to hire qualified people. It is primarily to hire people who best represent the constituents and their ideas, whatever that means. It's very easy to imagine "less qualified" prospects getting shafted in favor of, you know, representatives that voters like.

Precisely because people do not vote solely on "qualifications," we cannot actually say that the outcomes in representation by demographic variables are indicative of people's abilities to do the job. In that case, disproportionate representation of men cannot be said to have anything to do with qualifications. In fact, it's possibly the case that more qualified women on average are not given the job and lose out to less qualified men. And if that's true, then a lack of female representation would be highly indicative of voting practices favoring other traits over qualifications-- which is to say in that case, the Tyson dude should be joining Gillibrand, not confronting her.
