“Google seems to be advancing a ‘flawed and incomplete sense of equality’ by making sure men and women receive similar salaries for similar work, said Joelle Emerson, chief executive of Paradigm, a consulting company that advises companies on strategies for increasing diversity. That is not the same as addressing ‘equity,’ she said, which would involve examining the structural hurdles that women face as engineers.”

Translation: Okay, so maybe the pay (the thing we’ve been bitching about endlessly) isn’t really a problem, but the wahmens still don’t FEEL equal, so we still have a big systematic problem that’s all men’s fault.

Next, managers can consider subjective factors: Do they believe the employee has a strong future with the company? Is he or she being paid on a par with peers who make similar contributions? Managers must provide a rationale for the decision.

as what more evidence do you need to show a strong discriminatory bias in hiring and terms and conditions.

So a female is suing because she was hired as a level 3 engineer and one of her male classmates who came in after her was hired as a level 4? Isn't that just the luck of the draw? I would like to think that if the level 4 position was posted when she applied that she would have got it. Maybe I naive but it just seems like a timing issue more than anything.

I was looking at the salaries for graduates at my brother's law school, and I was surprised to see "non-minority" men are the lowest paid group. "Minority-women" were the highest paid, and "minority-men" made more than "non-minority-women."
