Not a fan of the website design but the post itself is a classic RPW message!

I definitely have a superiority complex. I don't let it show though, but that doesn't change the fact, nor the fact that I want to change it.

The complex isn't with an SO specifically, but in general with people around me. Anytime a person complains or shares a problem, I make snap judgements about the best way to tackle it. Then I judge the way that they tackled the problem. If their approach was smart and truly impressive, then I truly appreciate it and tell them. But quite often I find people's approach to be stupid, and stop myself to think: Who am I to think or know what the best way is?? I just feel like a judgmental bitch for thinking this, and must practice some peaceful "emptiness", which is simply observing and nothing else.

I wish I would have had your level of self-reflection at your age. I believe that my natural inclination to "find the best solution" and "cut through excuses" probably kept me from being accepted socially, and certainly has impacted my marriage.

As I've worked in the last two years or so to separate this automatic thinking style from my delivered responses I've seen great results at work, socially, and at home.

I relate to this very much. Something I've noticed is that this no-bullshit approach is great if you're interacting with someone with the same personality. Then you can bond over your same approach :D But in general, most people like complaining and talking small talk (which I actually have an aversion to), and it can come off as tactless when you don't commiserate XD

Love this!

Here are a few thoughts that I use to keep my own superiority complex in check:

  • I am far more likely to be critical of something if I understand and am familiar with something... for me this usually means I am recognizing something disadvantageous in someone else that I know firsthand because I have that disadvantage myself. Lording their fault over them, even just in my head, is therefore hypocritical.

  • Carl Jung says our weaknesses are overused strengths. Now the things that annoy me, or the things that I'm critical of aren't necessarily weaknesses, but this concept still applies. If I get annoyed with my boyfriend being a stickler about arriving early to stuff, I remind myself that this trait comes from his deep well of respectfulness.

  • I am good at things, and it's taken at minimum a few experiences to realize I am good at things. Sometimes I'm good at things because I invest a lot of hard work, too. How ugly is it to expect someone else to be perfect at something when I know firsthand what it takes to achieve perfection?

I relate to this very much. I spend time thinking about how to improve a specific trait, and thus I analyze the trait. As a result, I identify much better in others as well.

It's like the balding man who enters a room and instantly notices all the bald people... we're hypersensitive to our own lack and we train ourselves to see it everywhere.

Right! And the reverse is true. When we're confident about something, we notice in no one! I have a friend who has perfect skin, and I mean photoshop perfect. And she does nothing for it. And she really doesn't notice acne, pores etc. in others at all :D

I love Finer Femininity! She also has an Android app that links to various snippets of her blog. Def one of my favourite bloggers.

As far as the post itself I don't think I have a superiority complex. In fact, my usual problem lies the other direction in self-pity and being overly sensitive to criticism which is really something that I'm working on.

Thanks for sharing this! I particularly like the humility quotes.

It's easy enough for me to understand my own shortcomings and flaws, particularly when I am with Occam and around other people. Where I have to muster up the courage and actually commit to saying something (which may also involve deciding whether anything needs to be said)...he'll already be deep into conversation with someone he just met. :0)

I have become more outgoing and talkative (without a doubt) over the years, and I feel very comfortable in the "meeting for work" type conversations and banter. I think I will always prefer doing things (helping out, seeing to other's needs), listening and asking questions than actually diving into an evenly split conversation with someone I just met.

I have a few personal improvement projects that are on going, and one that I have been considering is the 'hair or nail salon.' Many such establishments are portrayed as havens for women to kick back, relax, and gossip. Sometimes they are a community hub, other times it's a place to rub shoulders with the elite and size up competition. Location and social class will obviously affect these variables, but I think it's safe to say that socializing, gossip, and the potential for competition are generally present.

Employees have to make a client feel at ease, and conversation often helps the time past, since the stylist can't read a book while working on hair or browse the web. As a result, one of the most popular tropes for a hair stylist is often 'close friend and confidant' - even when the characters have no prior relationship. In "Legally Blond" the hair salon owner and Blond became fast friends. This is a rare reversal since blond actually ended up teaching the salon 'bend and snap.' In the show 'Star' the hair salon is a place for gossip, fun, and competition.

Feminine interests and female behavior (good and bad) always seem to be amplified in this setting. All of which is interesting to note, but ultimately not specifically what I have been thinking about.

The stylist is immediately put in a position of some standing and power, after all, they are responsible for giving the client a new cut/color. Depending on who you ask, and the location they usually get their hair done - the stylist is either raising their status from the simply someone that does a service, to being a new fun acquaintance, or they are trying to close the distance from well respected expert to more of a friend. I think both initial status markers remain ultimately, but it's interesting to think of someone either trying to raise or lower their initial position by connecting with the client in a more friendly way.

I could also be completely mistaken in my evaluation and would love to hear what other people think.

My core idea is more how the hair stylists accomplish this. One may dive right into 'girl talk' and ask about your romantic situation, another may bring up a common celebrity gossip story, or ask what's pissed you off lately. Regardless, it has been my experience when I get my hair cut (which hasn't been for some time as I now do that myself) that the person I'm putting my trust in knows how to put me at ease. I submit that it certainly helps to have warm water and a scalp massage, as well as the overall atmosphere of a salon working in their favor...but they still require the skills and temperament to read a client, adjust their approach if needed, and tailor their energy output in a way that 'matches' and compliments my own.

I have no idea if stylists actually train and talk about these things, or if the people that tend to enter the field are just naturally social and skilled.

I really like this image however. Of meeting someone, and finding ways to connect with them physically in a small way to create ease (hand shake, hug, offering them a drink). I realize I don't shake hands with another woman the same way I do with a man. With a man, I tend to want to match firmness and energy, with a woman, I am much softer.

An easy way to create more casual conversation would be to ask things about her appearance or hair, comment that you find something about her (maybe a necklace she's wearing) particularly beautiful. Additionally, you could ask about her experience getting ready for the event (maybe traffic was horrible, or she got a later start than she wanted to). Another way to create closeness (though this could create distance if done incorrectly) would be to warn her about something that is slightly amiss (maybe her dress is folded up in an odd way, or her bra strap is showing, or there is some paper under her shoe). I have always found that people are thankful when I point out something that needs to be adjusted...but I don't know if it's how I bring up the subject (quietly, so no one can hear), or how I address the issue (sometimes I'll just pluck a bit of fluff from someone's shoulder, then show it to them with a smile and apologize a bit).

I'm attending several holiday events this year that I don't normally go to, and I think that's partially why these things are on my mind. I will be a new, unknown factor to everyone else (except Occam and few of his friends) so I really want to make a positive impression. One party will be with everyone he works with...normally they have a small party, and keep it to just the employees as that tends to be a bit more jovial and fun. However the company has been growing a lot, and just did a big relocation and expanded in several new areas, so they now want to welcome everyone officially and show off a bit. :0)

It's really important to me that I make a positive and lasting impression with all these people, but especially the company owners and the CEO (the people Occam reports to). His job is largely autonomous, he runs things with the support of his team, and has a lot of freedom. I know there's a bit of curiosity about me as well...and I'm honestly trying not to think about that too much.

If this is rambling and scattered, I apologize, I'm really just trying to iron out some personal wrinkles and make sure that I am in the best possible position to make Occam look good and increase his reputation.

I think stylists spend so much time in close proximity to other women engaging in mutual primping activities that there's no need for formal practice. All women want to feel beautiful and pampered which stylists are in the position to give.

How exciting for you meet your SO's office! That can be nerve wracking too. Its always extremely helpful for me to look the best I can, smile a lot, be present, engage in any party activities, say 'yes' more than 'no, thank you'. If you find yourself separated from your SO, I generally go up to a woman or a group of women (super easy around the bar or bathroom line or food) and start chatting. It can be as true as 'my SO is mingling and I'd love to chat with you /guys. Do you work here or are you a date?' to 'Oh, he did mention you work together (anecdote)', ' where do you live?', 'where are you from'. Then I tend to ask people what is exciting or good in their life or questions that can define their personhood. I almost use game to make friends. I like being the fun person full of ideas that makes someone think. It can feel like a high risk question but everyone engages so much easier and it feels like I got to know them vs I shared pleasantries with them. When I meet them again, its obvious the 'risk' was worth it because everyone remembers interacting with me.

Idk why but I find the compliment on jewelry, clothing etc is the easiest convo starter but its hard to steer that conversation into a friendship. I see this suggestion everywhere on making quick friends but at some point you have to establish who they are or why they are there at that moment or anything deeper. Maybe I am bad at jumping from that topic to anything else.

The time my SO gave me the most compliments was when he was busy mingling and I just started hitting it off with other people. His colleagues/supervisors complimented him because I can have fun (GOLF?) A happy woman having fun is something that attracts a lot of attention. I find joy is lacking in most adult interactions so maybe thats why? It may be your cup of tea or not but I get better responses, specially from the higher ups in the company, when I am obviously having fun even if its an unexpected situation and unexpected crowd. People specifically complimented him on 'landing me' which is so ridiculous but it gave me a high for a week! All because I decided to have fun no matter what for a couple of hours.

I didn't know if you had a question or if you were just thinking out loud so I don't want to give unsolicited advice. This is just my experience.

I LOVE that you took the time to reply to my babbling. :0)

How exciting for you meet your SO's office! That can be nerve wracking too.

To date I have met a few people he works with, but yes this will be a very different setting all together. I'm not too nervous, simply because I know I've never upset or irritated anyone upon meeting them. I'm confident in my overall pleasantness and good manners, so this is more about how I want to make the jump from 'pleasant addition' to 'memorable new acquaintance.' I want to leave a lasting impression because I look great and stand out in the right ways. This is different from how I normally approach parties. Usually it's more of a "be polite, converse as much as you can stand, and don't do anything stupid." Suffice it to say I have never been enthusiastic about parties, and have always preferred to watch as opposed to being more in the center of the activity.

This actually tends to describe my overall social standing as well. I'm a bit of a nomad, I can get along with a lot of people, but my presence and absence are both taken in stride. In terms of the female social matrix, I'm not a queen bee or at the top of the food chain. I'm also not at the very bottom. I guess the middle better describes my standing, but I don't partake in the climbing games. The fact that I'm never a permanent addition seems to remove the 'potential threat' I pose to the rankings within any group. I think this is why I'm generally welcomed, often missed, but first and foremost - I don't disrupt in any way. I tend to be the confidant and advisor to everyone, and perhaps that's the other reason I don't experience much 'pecking'. I know where all the bodies are buried. :0)

I'd like to be a bit more vibrant, and yes, I would like the spotlight to drift in my direction a bit purely because people are interested in who I am and what I have to say. It's vain, to be sure, but as someone that tends to actively avoid attention if at all possible in social settings, I think it's a rather nice one.

Thanks for talking about your own experiences and things that work for you. I have attended functions (work and social) with past boyfriends, and met families...the list goes on hahah! This is just the first time that I've spent time thinking about it beforehand with more care and a sense of purpose. I have a clear idea of what I'd like to accomplish, whereas normally I just go and whatever happens, happens if that makes sense.

This has been a recent 'go to' for me since I'm figuring out my sense of style. I may say "that dress looks fantastic, if I try to wear that cut/color/fabric I end up looking like a __[insert something funny]" Heels are particularly easy since I can't walk in them, and I have some funny stories about trying and failing to --- suddenly we're sharing embarrassing moments which range from funny to mortifying --- that opens up the field to talk about more general fears, funny things we've observed, advice gone wrong, movies or shows (because those awkward moments are always seen as endearing for the main character and used as 'karma' for the 'evil' one). Once you get to media and entertainment, everyone has an opinion. You can even start the conversation from there "I love your hair, it reminds me of __ from ___! Have you seen it?/are you familiar with her?" (yes or no)....keep the conversation focused on them/and other movies or shows they like (you can simply ask, but usually they will offer their opinion without prompting). Then it's easy to jump from movies or shows to music and theater and art...which can lead to personal attempts at being artistic or acting, singing, playing an instrument, or sports.

Entertainment, hobbies, family, work/school, philosophy - I dare someone to direct me to an individual that has zero opinions for all of those topics. People really are more or less very similar, and once you know the overall ideas, then you can play with them and end up in some really interesting places. Everyone has a passion, you just have to find it and watch them run. The biggest challenges for me are usually: 1. getting out of my 'happy and quiet' place of comfort, 2. maintain enough energy throughout the event.

I am an introvert....sometimes I go all day without saying a word until Occam arrives home, and that feels normal and satisfying to me. In person exchanges can be taxing, and while I have built up my tolerance thanks to sports, school, work etc...I still get drained and just want to relax on my own, in a quiet corner.

Fortunately, this will be a party with dinner, and then drinks. So I should be able to rest a bit during the actual meal. For better or worse, I'll just have to 'buck up' and fake it if necessary.

His colleagues/supervisors complimented him because I can have fun (GOLF?) A happy woman having fun is something that attracts a lot of attention.

Haha, yes I understand exactly what you're talking about here. They also tend to notice how I'm not ruffled by his commentary or jokes, and our dynamic tends to stand out compared to others (I'll get him drinks for example) and offer to procure them for the people around me.

I apologize if my rambling made me sound like someone that doesn't know how to chat with others, and I do appreciate you sharing your thoughts! :0) Maybe I'm terrible at explaining things on this subject (which is entirely possible). To return back to the FSM...what I'm interested in accomplishing is going from the middle/upper middle well liked, but non-essential drifter - to center stage queen bee.

Thank you again for the thoughtful and detailed comment!

[–]hostwithmost 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

You absolutely didn't make it sound like you didn't know how to chat with others. I loved the analysis of female interactions built on the fsm theory. I'm sure you are great at it because imo all it takes is a personality and you definitely have that! I think this sub is not an exception from an fsm. Maybe a delayed response one but an fsm nonetheless. We like to agree on things here :D

Thank you so much for writing up various conversations paths for aesthetics. I have a style that I've had since I was 15ish and has served me well so maybe I just feel insincere trying to relate to someone else's.

I love that you are self analyzing and aiming for the queen bee role. I would love to discuss more if you have questions on how. I don't want to assume my experiences are actually applicable. I went to a boarding school for close to a decade and fsm feels instinctive enough that I don't actually know why the things I do work. It's fascinating! If you want to take the time, I'd love to slow my own instincts down and talk about it. Friendships among women and preening goes so hand in hand.... it's complex!

I love that you get drinks for your SO, I am into everything disruptive (in current political atmosphere and tech world) so yay!

[–]PhantomDream09 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I had a really great conversation with Camille as well, and realized how different our approaches are. She's a natural star and people always gravitate towards her for numerous reasons.

I learned that I tend to have a more business approach (know who I'm meeting, and some background information). I'm changing my initial idea, I'll do less information collecting (I'm settling for knowing names and faces ahead of time, and positions with the company, and some history of the company) so that actual exchanges are more about discovery and reading the person in the moment. I do a lot of reflecting naturally (giving positive body language feedback, and encouraging responses), but now I'll take it a step further by incorporating something they've said and repeat it back to them before building on it.

I also realized that the 'center of attention' has more to do with the fact that I just want to look stunning dress, hair, makeup etc. The exchange with you, and my chat with Camille really helped me identify more specific (and therefore achievable) goals, so it's been a very helpful experience and I hope it gives others new things to consider. :0)
