It's a simple fact that cleaning will go faster if he helps. The next time he complains, it's perfectly reasonable to politely ask if he can take something on the list, like sweeping or vacuuming. I'm curious why this arrangement was even made, if you're both working full time. I do the lion's share of the housework, because I stay home with our girls, but when I worked full time, it was absolutely an even split. Is his job substantially more taxing? If so, would you be able to hire a cleaning person?

How do you feel about doing most of the cleaning? Does he cook or do the snow cleaning/mowing?

There was a study that said when spouses added up the percentages of house chores they both claimed to do, the total was always over 100%. I thought that was kind of cute. so for all we know, he thinks he's doing 80% too.

My husband tells me to clean less all the time (and our place is a mess tbh), and getting to the bottom of it, he doesn't care if the place is clean at all, he doesn't like it when I walk around cleaning because it disrupts him and he thinks cleaning is useless. Does yours think cleaning is useless?

It could be that he's like 'literally why are you doing all this useless stuff'. which would also explain why he isn't helping you clean.

I really like the idea of “equal rest” in household labor division. Don’t try for equal work, but rather equal rest. Working towards equal rest means trying to make sure that both partners have similar amounts of time to truly rest and relax. It means different things to different people so it is very flexible to fit any couple.

With both of you working, can you hire a housekeeper to come once a week or so?

I do stay at home but we still have housekeepers come twice a month to clean toilets and whatnot.

You can literally google "cleaning tips" and get more helpful info per you asked questioned.

As per what everyone else is talking about. What does he do around the property? Are your levels of clean comparable? Maybe lower your standards. The house may not have to be as clean as you are making it. You said he complains about how much time you spend cleaning. Does he complain about how dirty it is?

Honestly you just have to keep up every day and it makes it so much easier. Pick up as you go. Make beds first thing in the morning. Dirty dish? Put in dishwasher, I never let dishes collect in the sink I think it's gross. I don't even use hampers for dirty clothes I put them straight in the washer to collect. Wipe table down after every meal, wipe counters through the day. Kids toys only allowed in her room. End of night vacuum and Swiffer really quick. Doesn't really take much if you stay on top of it. I hate clutter though and need everything to be clean and smell good. I actually enjoy it.

I had/have the same situation as you, since my bf could care less about being in a tight and clean environment I decided to hired a professional cleaner that comes once every two week; on top of that we both have few tasks to keep the house organized day to day. We made a contract and we both signed and added penalties if is not complied.

For instance: I put the dish in the dishwasher but he put them away; Whoever get up from the bed last will make the bed; He does the laundry and each of us is responsible for it’s own clothes;

It’s hard though, because they will never care about the house the same way as we do, but you need to find a solution that works for both and make you happy.

Maybe each of you clean after yourself, that way it won’t accumulate.

Sure! Tell your husband you want a lot more "quality time" with him (wink while you say this) and that in order to get more "quality time" you need him to help out with "list of items" to make the time available.

Most men will dive in and become super productive around the house when they understand they are freeing you up and preserving your energy for more "quality time"

In some instances you might even find he does everything before you get home...

What do you mean 'he makes a big deal of it'?

Is he asking for praise and attention for cleaning? If so, are you giving it to him?

I don't know if this applies to you, so feel free to ignore it if it doesn't, but sometimes we punish people for trying, and it incentivizes them never to try. If he does some cleaning and you act like he hasn't done it properly, he's never going to want to clean.

How tidy does he want the house to be?

Imagine complaining about not spending enough time with ur girlfriend.. does he not have hobbies of his own? My girlfriend has to fight and almost beg to have my attention / spend time with her. Hell, I think spending something like 6-8hours a week with her is enough to me. Though, i do spend 1 or 2 evenings a week with her just to please her. But i’d be perfectly content seeing her once a month
