How to avoid emasculating your man?

My husband is nearly impossible to embarrass, but I try not to push it with obvious things like contradicting him over something serious in public/in front of family and friends or telling him not to do something.

I don't tell him what he can and can't buy, because I trust him to be aware of our financial situation. If we're with friends or family and he's doing something I don't like, like having another beer when he's clearly had too much, I'll usually send him a text message and he gets the point. Only once or twice has he ever embarrassed me enough for me to show it in front of people, so I know he's careful, too.

I definitely reccomend the book Love and Respect. It's a little condescending and religious in nature, but still really helpful. I'm also listening to the Five Love Languages.

Don’t act like his mom, let him make the decisions, tell him he’s a man, don’t look at other men, have lots of sex, let him dominate you whilst having sex.

Truthfully the men I have been with who I end up emasculating often lack the skills to make good decisions so I take over that role. In that case I usually lose attraction and the relationship doesn't continue. If a man makes good decisions and is competent I will naturally step aside. For example, my husband is excellent at managing money. I never trouble him about it. I had an ex that was an awful spender and I was constantly challenging him.

You need to think about why this pattern appears in your relationship. Is it your problem or is it his?

If a man isn't competent and is immature and irresponsible you can't let him take the lead no matter how many self help books you read.

Picking on him

Being patronizing

Suggesting things with intent for him to do what you say but acting like he’s deciding

Correcting him (especially small things like if he pronounces something wrong)

Valuing others’ opinions over his no matter how much you actually agree

I read fascinating womanhood and the tips on phrasing seem small but go a long way. Like instead of saying “You should do it this way” say things like, “Have you considered doing it this way?” Seems so small, but phrasing is very important.

By not pandering to his fragile ego. With a man who's secure in a masculinity you won't have to walk on eggshells for fear of upsetting them.

You should try both, he could just be awkward about talking about sex, it might help encourage him if you seem to want to talk about it. Good luck!

TBH, if I even felt like I could emasculate him, that would be enough to not only lessen his actual masculinity in my eyes but my trust in him to be leader. If he doesn't like something I do, he lets me know.
