"Settling" in regards to your marriage partner is often considered a negative in our society.

I’ve been thinking though - were we ever so concerned with such things as “true love” throughout most of human existence (before huge civilizations)?

As I understand it, for most of history people would marry whoever was available for them from their village/tribe and the focus was more on survival and procreating than obsessing over how "compatible" you are with your partner.

It seems like in the modern world our lifestyles have killed our ability to develop true love with someone unless they are constantly stimulating us, and on top of that, the requirements and needs we expect our partner to fulfill has also increased due to the complexities of our lifestyles.

The paradox of choice is that people think they're happier "knowing" that they have a variety of options, when in reality, people are happier with less choice.

What do you ladies think? Can pragmatic, realistic "settling" ever be a positive thing in relationships?
