How do you boil a frog?
If you put a frog into a pot of boiling water, he'll jump out of it immediately - a rational course of action for self-preservation.
If you place the frog into a pot of water at room temperature, and slowly begin to heat it, then the frog will continually adjust to the change in his environment, rather than leaving the situation outright. By the time the frog is able to grasp his perilous situation, it's too late to escape the pot.
I don't remember where I first heard this analogy, but I think it rings true for a lot of people that become depressed, restless, or otherwise unhappy with their lives.
I think this type of escapism has become extremely common in recent years, with young people failing to leave nest, a general lack economic/professional opportunities, and the lamentable state of the social world in modern, western democracies.
The first step in prevention and correction is to simply be aware of how insidious damaging compulsive escapism can be - if you can at least be mindful of that fact, you're probably way better off than most of the population (at least in terms of time management).
The second step is recognizing when a situation isn't leaving you satisfied, and either changing the situation, or leaving it. Hate your job? Find a new one. Hate your roommates? Move out. Have a problem with someone? Cut them out of your life.
A frog will allow himself to boiled alive, if he's made comfortable before his death.
A clean amputation is less of a threat than a festering infection.
Often, it's the small problems which are left unaddressed, that become our eventual undoing. The weaker enemy enemy is a much greater threat than the stronger, if you've foolishly made the mistake of underestimating him.

I have always wondered about these shitty pots people seem to have for boiling frogs in...
I also question the method though.
Has anyone ever put a live frog in boiling water? What really happens? I would love to test it, but I don't want to be cruel for the sake of a really fucking stupid analogy.

It of course jumps out, the saying comes from an experiment in which the frogs were lobotomized if i recall. But the saying still says something important about human nature.

I'd recommend everyone going to school to at least ditch them when in school. You become easier to approach/start talking to, and you give yourself a reason to be more outgoing instead of staying in your own world.

Listening to prerecorded music tends to be high reward behavior.
[–]RXRob 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link
Can you embelish on that?
I find that it adds a degree of separation from my surroundings and makes me unapproachable

Pushing a button to get an instant mental thrill is a form of distraction that can lead to a form of addiction in people.
High reward (thrilling and easy) versus low reward (risky and takes work to earn).

But how else am I supposed to learn how to play a song by ear?
[–]slooberki 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
advice from a musician.
to learn music by ear, the first step is to be able to reproduce the song in your brain (without actually listening to it). once you do this you can rapidly learn it on whatever instrument you use while having full access to it mentally
Note: I'm not telling you to listen to your favorite songs less. Just a tip for learning by ear.
[–]DeputyDelicious 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Thanks! This is something I've become pretty good at doing. My boss hit me last year with the "no music at work" rule. So every since then I've picked a song and sort of had it on repeat until I have the whole thing in my head so that I have a song in my head at work. Not quite the same thing as listening to music at work, but it works.
[–]slooberki 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
do you ever find that you can do it better when you're not sitting with your instrument (e.g. walking from the bus station or something) where as once you sit down and play a note on your guitar/piano/whatever, suddenly your brain is at the mercy of the instrument to produce a tone?
[–]DeputyDelicious 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I don't think so. The way I've been trying to do it is by listening to a song for say 2 weeks straight. Get good sleep then go silent and try to recreate the sound with my guitar mainly focusing on the melody.
Granted it's a lot of guess work right now for me. But after playing a lot of the minor pentatonic scales (all 5 shapes), I've sort of gotten a good idea of where the next note should be, like in terms of higher or lower and I will just guess in a nearby area until I get it right or close.
[–]abdada -3 points-2 points-1 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Failed argument I hear often.
"But professional sportsball players play video games!"
If you truly are using music to learn a skill, good. Do that. But if you listen for 5 minutes for learning and then just fantasize for 3 hours, fail.

EBook is being transformed into a short episode video series.
Listening to your own compositions is work so it's fine. Same as playing the video game you're working on or tasting the cupcakes you bake to sell.

Alright this has kind of post has been doing it's floating around the community for a while now.
The basic premise being that the MGTOWs are all a bunch of cowardly guys that need to just get into the game regardless of whether they see a point to it or not.
With all due respect, go fuck yourself.
If your best argument is "you're depressed and unfulfilled, I know because I was like you" then I don't agree. Not everyone is like you. You said it yourself.
Here on trp we deal with reality as it comes, good or bad.
We deal with it. One thing that made this community great was that we all dealt with it in different ways. Everyone agreed on the foundation, the theory, and the reality and we all disagreed on how to deal with it. The PUAs decided to just slay and alpha widow the shit of out girls until they died. The MGTOWs decided to do whatever the fuck the wanted whether it be camping or traveling the world, or jacking their dick while playing video games. The Married or want to be Married Redpill guys talked about what strategies to implement to kill the hypergamy in a woman. But slowly some have been pushing an agenda to make the community conform to one standard of dealing with reality. That is honestly pure bullshit and just like there are many ways to get to a point where you're putting up two plates on the squat rack. There are plenty of ways to deal with the degradation of society.
So how about we kill this whole "If you don't get inshape and get a killer salary and marry a high quality woman to keep your genetic line alive you're a cowardly piece of shit" thing. Because I don't call you a woman supplicating faggot for wanting to find a redpill relationship and tolerate the incessant emotional moans and groans of your own pet cum dumpster. WHICH BTW comes with a delicious need to keep track of menstration cycles, calorie count, workout plan.
If you want to go through all that then by all means have at it bud, I'll just keep sitting here playing Frisbee with my adorable labrodoodle.

The big no win time drains are gaming, porn, television and internet. These are all things that people spend hours and hours doing. A little bit can be good, but spending a day watching Netflix and compulsively indulging in these forms of easy entertainment is a sign everything is not right.
The big no win time drains are gaming, porn, television and internet.
These are all things that people spend hours and hours doing. A little bit can be good, but spending a day watching Netflix and compulsively indulging in these forms of easy entertainment is a sign everything is not right.
If your argument is that you can live a happier life without these things, then consider that some people do these things because it is their hobby that makes them happy. To become exceptional at anything, you have to have a borderline unhealthy obsession with it.
So your argument could very well be inhibiting someone's potential to achieve greatness by telling them that the thing they do constantly is really a compulsive escapism rather than a passion. I could be wrong though, definitely tell me your thoughts.
[–]Senior EndorsedMattyAnon 6 points7 points8 points 10 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
some people do these things because it is their hobby that makes them happy.
If your hobby is tinkering with widgets then sure. You'll develop a real ability with widgets (it won't even take very long if you're properly obsessed and methodical about it).
If your hobby is games (or worse, TV) then sure you can get benefit out of it but 99.9999% won't and can't. It's just escapism and self delusion.
Same with all aspirational careers (TV reviewer, Playing games, Acting, Writing, Modelling) - the vast majority are literally wasting their time.
Sports has side benefits (you meet real people, you become more attractive). Playing games does give you a bit of a mental boost, but you get that in the first 15 minutes a day. After that it's time wasting.
Think about it this way: as you get older, you are competing more on your talents with other men. You think 10 years of watching TV helps you compete against men who go on adventures, learn to do new things and practice their people (and pickup) skills? Hell no, you'll just be a child by comparison.
Keep your escapism in moderation and be realistic about how much it benefits you compared to other uses of your time.
[–]DeputyDelicious 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Same with all aspirational careers the vast majority are literally wasting their time.
This is an interesting thought right here. I think with this kind of thought you can establish that there is a fine line between escapist hobby and "real world" hobby. But how do you know when you've struck the proverbial gold with a hobby? Are not all hobbies ultimately a waste of time until they suddenly aren't?
I hope I'm making sense.
[–]Senior EndorsedMattyAnon 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
You're making sense, and it's a good question. How do you know the value of any investment? Brutal answer: you never know for sure.
But a good way to think of it is... how many people want this job? what sort of people get it? how much luck is involved? how did they get there? what are my chances?
Aspirational jobs have people working for free until they make it. You are literally competing with free until you prove you are the best in some way. This makes your odds practically nil unless you are in the top tiny fraction.
If I set out to be an actor... I know I'm competing with millions of others who are damned good at what they do, many working for nothing. How many actors are there? How many acting jobs? I bet it's 100:1 wannabe actors to successful ones. So that means I gotta be top 1% to get anything.
If I set out to be a lawyer, all I gotta do is qualify and be able to do my job and I'll get paid, and I can work my way up from there, same for most professions.
Professional computer games player? Haha hell no, I can't compete with an 18 yr old with lightning reactions and 80 hrs a week to "work" and a basement paid for by his parents.
[–]MortalSisyphus3 points 10 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
People need to go a little deeper and think about why they use terms like "waste of time." It seems to imply that some behavior is meaningful, while other behavior is not meaningful. But what is it that distinguishes meaningful behavior from not? Dig into that deeply enough and it will really start opening your eyes to peoples underlying premises, the basic truths which they never examine or question.
[–]Of_course__But_maybe2 points 10 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
There's a difference between working a part-time job while trying to build a subscriber base on Youtube/Twitch and playing video games all week long with no one watching.
Even if you choose to make your hobby into your career, you have to have a structured approach to it or you'll burn out. Most of these people who pursue their passion end up this way because they fail to regulate their behavior.
If you have aspirations for an entertainment career in video games or porn, you're going to have to set up your own 9-5. You're not going to be gaming ALL the damn time, like the OP mentioned.
You have to have a foot in reality to plan your own future regardless of where your goals lie.

To become exceptional at anything, you have to have a borderline unhealthy obsession with it.
I see your point. I've become quite proficient at many things, one happens to be FPS like CoD, back when the games had dedicated servers. While stationed overseas, I got into shooters, not much else to do when I wasn't working or lifting. All my other pursuits were unavailable, but I had the internet. I am so good at 4, 5 and mw2 that I am often banned from servers because they assume I'm cheating.
It did consume my life for a long time, every winter after I retired I would spend my time killing, getting banned, and watching clans implode around me as they always divided on if I was cheating. The butthurt shitty gamers thought I was, those who were good knew I wasn't.
The result is i spent about six years doing mainly that, because other things like being unable to walk very far from my injuries left me little else to do. I enjoyed it, but I knew I was wasting time.
I can walk again now, and I rarely game. Absolutely zero online because I don't have a landline connection, just mobile. I was escaping with it, on purpose due to my physical and financial limitations. What use is it to me to be so incredibly good at gaming? None. It's still something to wind my mind down if the physical labor doesn't do it, but otherwise it's zero use.
He is saying that for those of us who are using it to leave reality for a while, and it becomes a number of years, we lost that time. If you're still obsessively gaming, you're wasting time. It's not a personal attack because you like to game. Shit I'm 46 and used to game with a guy in his 70s. If it's costing you in reality then it's a problem. Often we only see it after we have something more important to do with our lives, important to us. Everything is ultimately meaningless, but you might as well do something cool with your time here. I fuck girls his age while driving cars my age.

"None of them will ever get anything from it." "It's easy and fun."
Bit of a contradiction there... Though I agree with the general principle of moderation. You can work too much, you can lift too much, you can read too much, you can game too much. Just live a balanced life, the Middle Way.
[–]Morholt_dhu 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I think when he says "get anything from it" he means get anything of lasting value. Gaming and porn give pleasure in the moment but they have no yeild later, and in that way are actually destrutive; because they consume hours that could have been spend in pursuits that yeild long term gains.
Reading for example, is a pleasure in and of itself, but you also acquire applicable knowledge and conversation fodder at the same time. Depends on what you're reading of course. Some pulpy garbage is just as bad an escapism as anything.

No. MGTOW is like TRP except the self-improvement / SMV raising / plate spinning is optional.
So a single 33 year old dude who lives in a small apartment and spends whatever free time he has on porn, junk food and mindless internet browsing may proudly call himself 'MGTOW', but in reality he has low SMV and is therefore not alpha when seen through the prism of TRP. It's male hamstering.
Whereas TRP is all about raising SMV.

This is a very important subject and you treated it in a shallow way. No offense bro, but your post litteraly says "porn, tv, internet and gaming are distructions one uses to escape from our shitty lives. Quit doing those things and change your real life instead of fleeing it".
Anyway. I've been doing that for my whole life so I know where this road leads:
the three big areas of everyones life which are health, wealth and love(more like social and sexual life) will suffer a lot from it. You will become poor, ill, alone and sexually frustrated. This is no exaggeration, if you keep compulsing like that, this is what's going to happen.
Those things will never be enough because you can't flee reality. By trying to escape it, you only add problems to it. You can not escape reality completely. If you don't like it, you can change it or change your perception of it though.
In the end, escaping makes you more sad than facing your life, fighting and failing miserably.
Everything I said was field-tested.

You can never escape "reality". You can only modulate/manipulate your perception of it.
I've attempted to escape reality via pornography, gaming, psychoactive drug use, and paracosm for roughly 8 years and my hypothesis before most of this was correct. I never escaped reality, only attempted to diminish some psychological issues I never wanted to admit to and learn/get help.

Notice how all activities that are not tied to money, work, "love", sex, physical strengthening, and social acceptance are spun as being "frivolous time wasters"?
Hmmmm....
As Roosh pointed out this week in his latest article, if you are living in a civilized society away from nature, then you are always living under some else's frame. You just don't realize it.

[–]TerryTravis 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Exactly, and why do people want to escape? Here are the reasons if you ask me:
Boredom: Bluepillers get bored with the monotomy of their every day life and feel the need for some easy excitement and variety. Tv & Games gives them this.
Fear & avoidance: Bluepillers are afraid to face their fears, so they get comfortable in their escapism habbits.
Easiness: It has never been easier than today to indulge in escapism. We have unprecedented access to all forms of distraction at our fingertips. And the most favored escape is entertainment.

Again, you seem to be subject to artificial concepts. You swallow notions created by normalfags to make you feel bad with your life like a pelican. Yes, be a "grown up" and "real" man, don't forget to take a mortgage loan and work your ass off to pay it, because it's so mature and grown up. It's so immature to lead a careless life, you have to fuck it up a notch just for the sake of conforming with some normie notions of life.
