Summary: Want to actually lose weight? Skip a meal. Suffer. Watch the pounds shed away.

Body:

As far back as I can remember, I was overweight. Not quite obese, but anywhere from 15% to 30% body fat. Tried a hundred magical diets, tried cardio, tried lifting, could never stick to anything because nothing showed measurable results. No results, no motivation to keep doing something unpleasant.

You know what shows results? Not eating. I don't mean outright starvation, but rather having a very light breakfast (a few fruit / a bagel / piece of banana bread / etc. and a coffee), a normal or even larger-sized lunch, and no dinner. Have a tiny evening snack if you have to (under 200 calories). If you're hungry and can't think about anything else, pound back a litre of plain water - you'll feel full and will forget about the hunger in no time.

The results? Anywhere from 5-10lb loss per week. A few years back I went down from ~195-200lbs to a low of 168lb in a month. Only the first three-four nights were hard; after that it became normal. I looked forward to getting on a scale in the morning, because I knew the number would be lower than it was yesterday. On rare occasions it would go up ever so slightly, but at the end of the week it was always significantly lower than at the start. It worked.

To be clear, this is not a "healthy" method of losing weight, and will not build good eating habits, but it is not at all a big deal to maintain for a few months considering the guaranteed results. If you need to lose some weight, get over the initial fitness hurdle cold turkey, see borderline-instant results, and you'll have much more motivation to eat properly and exercise when you've actually made progress.

Over these last few years I fell back to my old habits and came up to that same 195lbs again. Started this "diet" a week ago and checked in at 186lbs this morning. I guarantee you that by the middle of October I'll be under 165lbs.

Don't pussy-foot with those low-carb diets or 10% reductions in calories. They are the "good" way to lose weight, but we both know you'll never stick to them for longer than a week.

Lessons learned: Dive in head first, severely cut your calorie intake, suffer through a few nights of hunger cramps, and enjoy the results.
