Author here. Would be nice to be credited / have a link to the original article in the post.
Right now, this is plagiarism.

Great stuff Wisdomination...just added your blog to my Feedly reader.

[–]1015814_136 points7 points8 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
No, its from the wisdomination blog and the poster above you is the author. He deserves the credit. The OP who copy-and-pasted wisdomination's article has been saying 'thanks' to all the posters here who complimented the article, but its not his work. He has had ample opportunity to credit the source but has chosen not to.

Are you this blogger?

If not, you are plagiarizing.

He is not, and yes he is.
OP, credit source or GTFO.

Can you please summarize the specific parts of your writing you believe he plagiarized beyond the broad-stroke idea of discipline > motivation? I'm on mobile and am not able to compare then side by side.
I think a summary would be helpful in allowing readers to disregard his post and read yours, if it's truly plagiarized.
Edit:uh nevermind it's apparently cut and pasted. Leaving this up for stupidity's sake

Also worth noting is the character trait called "grit" which is passion and perseverance for long term goals. One might say it is the synthesis of motivation and discipline
Here is a study measuring grit in Ivy Leaguers and West Point cadets, and an overview of its importance with achieving success:

Great post, agree with everything and funnily enough, I also wish I had known this at least 10 years ago. Just to add: what helps me building momentum is going through 30 day challenges, and keeping a tally on the wall of how many days have I done already (and how many to go). It's crazy how easy it is to get up at 5am, immediately go for a quick 20 min run, come back make coffee, meditate for 20 minutes, and start working on your project if that's what you have done for the last 30 days. What most people don't realize is that it's only tough in the beginning stage and it only gets easier and easier with time.
[–]onisun3260 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I'm happy with the success you are having, but the earliest time you can drink coffee and benefit from it is 9:30. Read about circadian rhythm.

The Celts were motivated. The Romans were disciplined.
[–]sea_weasel0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
What's the context behind this quote?
[–]SasquatchMcKraken3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
The fact that France today resembles Italy a lot more than it does Ireland. The highest test for almost anything is a military one, and I can't think of a better illustration of OP's point than the ruthless, relentless discipline of the Roman legions versus the fierce but easily-exhausted enthusiasm/motivation of their Celtic opponents. A system will trump feelings every time. Even if that feeling is a desire to be free.

Motivation gets you started, discipline keeps you going.

I really like this summary. And. You expressed it very eloquently.
Motivation gets you started.
Discipline keeps you from quitting.

I agree and very good post. I find that I'm unfortunately suffering through that now. Just lost 20lbs and looking average so far (not amazing) but I felt like I'm a tad burned out. Had the motivation but I lost it. Now I just need to implement discipline. I think another problem to add to this is the idea of "comfort." Comfort unfortunately is a death machine to goal setting. I gained so much weight last year when I got a hot girlfriend (i was in shape at the time I met her). If I had more discipline regardless of existential conditions, I'd be banging way more chicks, but now i'm just playing catch up. Regardless, great article

Great write-up. Believe it or not the best thing I ever read to help me stop procrastinating and become disciplined was a book meant for housewives. It taught me to develop a system for cleaning with daily, weekly, monthly and so on tasks and my house has never been tidier. The habits you build by cleaning up after yourself spill over into other areas of life and now im a lot more productive.

Cool, do you remember the book? Sounds helpful.

I find there's a definite correlation between cleanliness of the house and mental tidiness.
Systems to clean on a daily, weekly and monthly basis are an immensely helpful and simple way to start breeding discipline. 💯💯

I was just thinking about this the other day. I used to read motivation books (embarrassingly). The best advice I've ever gotten was from a Nike ad:
"just do it"
[–]bourbonhipster1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Motivation. It's whimsical by nature. It comes and goes. It's fleeting at best.
We tend not to begin tasks without ample motivation. However, attempting to drive a successful business start up or a new killer fitness goal on motivation and little else will see your ventured prospects fizzle quickly.
This is burn-out.
Motivational forces replenish with time and can quickly shift focus.
Motivation without discipline will ultimately lead to failure.

Saved your post. This is exactly where my head is at.
I AM SO PASSIONATE ABOUT THESE SPREADSHEETS, I CAN’T WAIT TO FILL OUT THE EQUATION FOR FUTURE VALUE OF ANNUITY, I LOVE MY JOB SOOO MUCH!”
Thank you! This has always been my pet peeve with job interviews, etc (I've always worked in an office/financial setting). "What are you passionate about?" "Oh, I'm absolutely PASSIONATE about providing comprehensive insurance solutions for first time home buyers!" What a charade. Nobody in the office is passionate about insurance, or real estate, or hedge funds. They're passionate about making money, getting ahead, getting positive feedback for good work, etc. I've always hated that shit.

This fucking helps. I'm 24 years old, and I'm (was- now that I read this piece of content) extremely motivational. I'm learning now that it's the bane of my existence. I'm very grateful you wrote up this piece.
My problem now lies in setting up the proper reward system you hinted at. While feeling good prior isn't necessary, I need to feel good afterwards.
On a side note, how can one cultivate the discipline to not jerk it/ watch porn? Best I've done without porn lately is 17 days.

Very true. The past two weeks I haven't been 'motivated' to go to the gym, but I still went 10 days out of 14 - whenever I get there, my body goes on autopilot and does what it needs to do, and I feel great afterwards. I think this aligns well with delayed gratificaiton

Motivation and Discipline. The dream and the decision.
You need both to succeed. One is the map the other is the action.
How do you get what you want? DO IT!

I think you are looking at this the wrong way. Discipline doesn't design beautiful buildings or write great novels. Those are achieved by Motivation.
Discipline will however make you an Architect, or a Writer.
Two different tools each with its proper purpose in the quest for Mastery.

[–]Tropicum points points points 9 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
I can certainly vouch for that. As I said in my recent post in AskTRP, I had amazing discipline for the first 8 weeks of studying at the start of the year, which, however, got slightly ruined in the end. Now I am working on recovering it by purposely doing things that I don't like doing and making myself uncomfortable.
I remember Nietzsche when talking about Will to Power in "Beyond Good and Evil" saying that in order to perform an action, our brain has to command and be commanded at the same time. Whichever force prevails will determine whether we do something or not.

Recommend "How to Fail at almost everything and still win big" by Scott Adams (https://books.google.com/books/about/How_to_Fail_at_Almost_Everything_and_Sti.html?id=sSwEAQAAQBAJ&hl=en) He makes a great case for developing systems instead of relying on motivation.

What are OPs thoughts on intrinsic vs extrinsic motivation?
[–]Andrew543210 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I'm going to disagree here.
Motivation, when you're in control of it and can give it to OTHERS, is more effective than discipline.
Discipline is about action in a vaccuum. We don't live in a vaccuum. Never have, never will.
Motivation, when it is based on you (I want this or that and whatever for me), is a limited fuel supply. Motivation, when it is based on others (I want this or that and whatever for me to show you), is a never ending fuel supply.
Discipline, one begrudging acts. Motivation, one joyfully acts.
The issue lies in not that motivation is nebulous and fleeting. It lies in an inability to manage a motivational energy.
How does one manage motivational energy? The answer is surprisingly simple and easy.
Slow down.
Take action slowly.
With presence.
Choose to let the motivation energize AWARENESS over activity. People who choose to energize action with motivation blow through this energy and get burned out. When awareness is energized the amount of information, cognitions and realizations made will significantly increase the quality of options made available to you.
Go forth and achieve.
[–]DoYouThinkYouAreYou0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I think you need to understand what "discipline" and "motivation" mean. Motivation is not about joyful action. Motivation can be abjectly horrifying. Let's say a man murders someone because they are about to expose them for being a fraud. The man is motivated to murder to protect his identity. There is no joy in it. But he had plenty of motivation.
The process you describe to "manage motivational energy" is actually pretty close to a discipline.
Being motivated to do something often feels like you're actually doing something, without actually having to do something.
Fuck motivation, simply do what's necessary.
[–]Roaring40sUK0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Great Post.
Discipline > Motivation every time. Discipline breeds habit, habit breeds results.
But how do you breed discipline and habit? By knowing and internalising your goals. Vision board it. So, when you need to re-establish discipline, you look at what you said you wanted from your life.
[–]Fizzdar[S] -2 points-1 points0 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

[–]Fizzdar[S] -2 points-1 points0 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

From one procrastinator to another; it gets better, just remember your goals. Do not become comfortable - seek discomfort.
[–]Hltchens-5 points-4 points-3 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Sounds like a lot of bullshit to only say, "Just Do It." I mean Nike said it for years, it's nothing profound. That's basically all you're saying by a large majority of the post. There's no need to get into the metaphysics of "breaking feelings from action," or some other stuff to make it sound profound. Just do it. That phrase covers everything.
[–]Ether_Freeth5 points6 points7 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Actually understanding the why of why just do it works is extremely helpful. Both in motivating the choice for discipline intrinsically as well as validating it logically.
[–][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Motivation is an emotional response. A strong, independent man does not make decisions based off of how he "feels". He makes decisions based on what needs to be done.
This is the difference between motivation and discipline. You shouldn't need to "feel good" in order to do what needs done. You do it.
[–]mytrillosophy0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
This is my thinking as well. Relying on motivation or people who say something along the lines of "I'll do it when I feel like it" in regard to an important task seem weak
