It's likely that OP has observed this but simply not commented on it, but unlike in the west, where there exists a devolving but at least existent form of social etiquette, the "bad" in China is greatly amplified by the absence of such a thing. An example of terrible social etiquette by western standards is during the 2008 Summer Olympics, when indigenous Chinese would simply take shits in line at the games, much to the horror of the foreigners in attendance.

In China, I've seen women publicly beating their husbands, throwing tantrums, and causing havoc that would be seldom tolerated even in places like California. Chinese women can go insane in public and the mechanisms for discouraging their insanity have been dismantled.

And good luck if you, as a laowai, get into a fight with Chinese people (probably dudes). Sure you may be bigger, faster, and stronger, but the moment other Chinese people catch on there's a fight, they're going to join the Chinese side, regardless of right or wrong. *Believes themselves to be untouchable and above the law (I'm an [insert country], they can't do anything to me/I know [insert title of local official they met once])

Dear friends, if you know an LBH or meet one (oh the humanity), smile, agree with everything they say then politely excuse yourself and get the hell away from them. Should you develop a relationship you will be automatically assumed to also be an LBH and when something bad does inevitably occur you will also go down with them.

Great post. I live in China too and this sums it up quite nicely. If you do things right, Chinese girls are pretty easy especially since their men are as beta as they come. Compared to them, you are a rock star.

This society is in many ways more fucked up than the West and it's slowly become a chore to live here.

I won't go into it now but I could do a post on it in the future. Either way, it's wonderful in the beginning but it's no place to live your life. From what I hear Thailand or Philippines is way better in that regard.

I'm an engineer who is the director of a startup. We manufacture and our investors are from China / Greater China so I spend half my time in mainly tier 1 cities (Shenzhen, Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong and Taipei). I'm in a LTR so these are just observations. I talk on why it can be seen as a paradise but also why it isn't.

Chinese; particularly Chinese women are very hypergamous. Chinese culture is defined by status and your guanxi (关系 face). This is derived from wealth, status, title etc. With the 1 child policy it is incredibly important to marry up - parents instil these values as if you marry a Chinese woman, you marry their family and you will support the in laws as they retire.

Many Westerners will find China to be a paradise because by most respects even a solid 6 white foreigner (Laowai) will be regarded around a 8-9. He is inherently seen to be exotic, worldly, tall, and there is a perception that he is wealthy. The reality is that most foreigners are relatively either underpaid poor English teachers or relatively wealthy expats there for work for a few years. One will often see older foreigners who just never left, the loss of this privilege can be a massive reverse cultural shock.

There is also a massive wealth inequality in China, Chinese are by Western standards either poor (peasant or rural family) or very wealthy (Fuerdai - 富二代 second generation rich, Hongerdai - 红二代 second generation red blood). There is a growing middle class however it's overplayed by the Chinese Govt and is far smaller demographically than in the West.

For me, although I am paid perhaps just above average in the West, in China, you have a driver, dress well (HK is heaven for tailored suits), have a nice car (a m5 for example will cost at least 3x than in the states) and apartment. The lifestyle also can be very different that in the west, with the exchange rates it is easier to never cook, clean, laundry etc, for yourself.

For poorer Chinese women in big cities; a foreigner is seen (perhaps incorrectly) a step up. Many foreigners can with little ease bed these women and there are millions of them in a big city, there is little 'game' required. Such behaviour is frowned upon; as there is an implicit social contract that that sex outside of marriage is a display of an intention to wife her. Chinese are typically shy, but if you are a foreigner you will find it incredibly easy to date and bed the lower or middle class Chinese (I'd argue almost too easy); even more so if you are an expat, tall handsome, dress well etc.

I'm in a relationship with a red pilled European woman back home and didn't partake myself but many men find it incredibly difficult not to. Most of my friends in China are either expats or fuerdai (educated in the West typically), most will spend literally years banging local girls - whilst being married too; it can make sustaining a proper relationship difficult. The fuerdai party scene is comparable what people say about those in the Gulf states, excess in money, excess in conspicuous consumption, it can make being in the West seem boring and quaint.

If you're an expat wanting to date the upper echelon of Chinese however it's still difficult, firstly you're a foreigner; most Hongerdai (second generation red) can't have proper relationships with foreigners and secondly even if you are wealthy and have a valuation of $5-10M; you're still poor by their standards. Most of these upper class women will look down on most Westerners; we are seen to be the help - even if you work for a big 4, or are a management consultant, you work 60 hour weeks to earn pocket money. Also the behaviour of many other ESL expats; drunken fights in Sanlitun, vomiting in the streets, promiscuity etc can tarnish the reputation of other expats.

The ESL expats are generally some of the worst human beings, they are basically there for a subsistence wage (as English teachers or a white monkey) and easy lays. It is a symptom of what is wrong with the West culturally; as they are tied down to the CC. Many do not dress well as they don't have to, don't observe or respect the local culture and treat local women rather poorly - just another lay. I say many, not all, some a very hard working young men on a gap year or there to explore a new culture or language but you do see some terrible human beings in the ESL community.

Women will never marry down; if she is a millionaire and over 30 she will find it difficult to marry. Many other wealthy Chinese men would not consider to marry a wealthy woman over 30 unless it was for business or her family is very well connected. You do see a lot of either divorced wealthy Chinese women (fuerdai or hongerdai) who either will choose to be alone (and have male mistresses) than marry down - despite the pressure to marry in China.

Overall China is different, interesting culture but not a place to find a wife unless you're invested for the long haul. Also I know a few men who have married Chinese women, that's a whole thread in itself, but I can put it concisely; don't. You will always be considered a foreigner; even in business meetings in San Francisco, they will refer to me as a laowai.

Never been to Shanghai. Spent three and a half years in Guangzhou. As soon as I learned enough Mandarin to date a girl who didn't speak English I stopped dating girls who could speak English.
