Resources for hobbies? I.e. Learning to Hunt, Fish, Marksmanship, Woodwork.

I left the house the day I turned 18, and while my dad is an absolute expert at all of the above, his attitude towards me makes him completely intolerable, and I cut my parents out of my life. Thankfully, I picked up the basics of most of the above before I left, because there wasn't options for sitting around playing video games, I worked with him any time I wasn't in school. Just wouldda been nice if that had yielded any respect from him eventually, but I digress...

There are people like this in your everyday life who are good at all of this stuff. They will be guys 10-20 years older than you, that you work with or interact with on a semi regular basis. One of the most valuable things for me was meeting a 32 year old dude when I was 19 and learning a lot about life from him. He already had a kid, he already dealt with psycho women, he already had life experience that saved me a lot of hassle. 17 years later, he's still one of my best friends, even though we're about on the same level experience wise (at some point you plateau).

I am fully aware of how important this relationship was to me, so I try to pass this stuff down to younger guys I work with and meet. The trouble is that so few people in their 20's these days give a shit or will listen to advice at all. There is a serious generational problem with young men these days and their entitled attitude towards everything that makes guys like me not want to give a shit anymore. Don't complain about your fucking problems and then ignore us when we try to tell you how to fix it. Don't get so wrapped up in this "red pill/blue pill" thing that you can't identify or respect people IRL who have skills they can teach you. Yeah, his wife may give him an allowance, but maybe this dude is on the lake every fishing opener. Maybe he's got no authority in the household, but he spends all weekend tinkering in the garage because that's really what he wants to be doing anyway, and it doesn't matter to him what color the fucking curtains are.

On TRP, young men have a good resource of older men teaching them about a very particular piece of life, but that thinking doesn't mean that you're successful or good in all areas of life, and you can't apply TRP principles to everything. Learn to identify other resources for education and listen as intently to them as you do here and you'll find that there is knowledge all around you -- you just have to be willing to listen.

As much as Reddit has it's problems, it is a good place to start learning these things. Followed by Youtube. For the sole reason that these communities are filled with people who are good at that particular hobby and want to help. You name it, there is a subreddit. Photography? Yes. Marksmanship? Yes. Mechanic? Yes. And don't underestimate a small subreddit. Don't underestimate their sidebar and wikis. Read them. Many times these subreddits will have a weekly/daily simple/stupid questions thread. Post your newbie questions there. Give respect where it is due. And when someone respected in that community answers your question, learn from it. You can never underestimate the willingness of some of these people to help. Take it and use it for your own benefit. You want to learn how to build a PC? Want to learn guitar? Photography? Want to learn card tricks as a hobby? Many times these subreddits lead you to YouTube. Go there. Learn, Practice, Repeat. Also, filter all the noise along the way. When you have too many resources, it's important to seperate good sources from the bad. First you have to decide what you want to do, and work on it (daily if possible even if it is a small amount of time). I find that the best hobbies are something you can just do mindlessly. (Of course you have to be careful when you are handling anything dangerous). What I mean is something like woodwork. You can just keep on doing it for hours, keep honing your skill in the long term. It's almost therapeutic.

I am extremely averse to this approach.

As an example have no interest in cars or mechanics nor do i like fishing or construction, and i definetly do not give a fuck about plumbing. Just because my grandfather could fix a pipe and take a look at his car does not mean i should learn a skill i am not going to use or be interested in.

Just take a look at my grandfather or father using a computer let alone trying to fix it.

Can they program? Can they play musical instruments? Design 3d parts and 3d print them? Mix a song? Of course they can not. I spent my time doing stuff i actually liked. I did not take a list of them manly hobbies and droned through it.

Different interests for different generations and different folks. Your time is very limited, take a hobby you are really passionate about and become good at it. It is better than trying to juggle "useful" or "manly" or "cool" hobbies you do not really appreciate.

I already have to juggle through the things i love and wish i had more time to create and learn more. Sure i would love to learn carpentry or the violin but right now it serves me no purpouse and does not resonate with me. I have more satisfying things to create :).

Id rather collaborate with some code for a project write a song or make a game than half heartedly plumb my house. For me it would be a waste of time. Where do your natural inclinations lie?

-For Woodworking intro watch Roy Underhill's "The Woodwright's Shop" on PBS. Pay attention to his technique, he's the real deal, and although he only uses hand tools, most concepts will tranfer to power tools.

-For Car Mechanics watch Scotty Kilmer's Youtube channel, he's got the right idea when it come to real automotive repairs you can make.

-For Construction, HVAC, Plumbing, pick up one of the Reader's Digest books like their home maintenance and repair manual, and you'll be on your way.

I've got years of experience in both home construction and Automotive technology, and I've grown to hate Shows like "This old house" and Motor week's segment "Goss's Garage" because most of what they say is distorted and often times the instruction and advice they provide is like the "Politically Correct" version of how to get things done.

I wish now that when I was younger I took my Dad up on the offer of learning how to fix cars and build things etc instead of just sitting in my room playing video games.

To some extend these things snow ball and your confidence grows. e.g Once you understand a bit of basic carpentry you can apply it to other areas. It's hard to put it in to words but knowledge of certain areas doesn't exist in isolation. It's about understanding how things work and have the experience and confidence to do something about it. Also mistakes will happen.

I think with cars it's quite hard nowadays as cars are very electronics based, which is hard to solve, and are difficult to work on due to restricted access and are largely design to NOT be worked on by people other than the main dealers.

The more practical stuff you do the better you get in all areas. Youtube videos can be really helpful, e.g for car fixes, but it's about getting off the keyboard and doing it to a large extent.

Every man should own, and know how to use a firearm. If you live in america, you should have no problem finding a range that offers basic instruction. Go to a few classes then go to your local gun store and buy a piece.

Depending on where you live, seek out a "maker's" community. They are popping up. You may have to search maker space or something. Anyways, I've done a class on welding and plan on blacksmithing. I really am amazed how little most of us know about car repair.
Use the class to get your foot in the door and meet people. These places often have yearly memberships which means you get access to the place to work on projects of your own, access to their equipment and resources,and a place in their community.

Ok guys, just because dad isn't around to teach you doesn't mean you can't. My dad said he wanted to teach me things, but he never did. Couldn't depend on him for anything because he was always working and I'm the least favorite kid. If I had waited for him to teach me, I wouldn't know a fucking thing.

I still learned how to shoot very effectively, better than all my brothers including the one who was in the army. I learned how to rebuild everything on a car, how it works and how to modify it to get more from the vehicle. Learned to build computers by doing it. Cooking was learned by doing it, including baking. Built my home and shop to rebuild cars, by doing it. I had jobs as a machinist and grew up on a farm, so I can make almost anything with metal, wood, ceramics, and resins. Figured out how to make lightweight fiberglass body parts for my cars. Plus I do photography and fly RC aircraft.

All this is stuff you can learn to do by jumping in and fucking doing it. Having a mentor helps, but you can do most of it on your own if you want to bad enough.

Google is your friend. Use it.

Edit If you want to know how to do some of the things I'm experienced in, I can and will help you. Keep in mind if it's an easy Google search away, I'll probably tell you to go there first.

Men are pushed towards even higher levels of beta providing by turning them into a more specialized workforce. All of which generates more complex products and services which yields higher profits.

For hunting/shooting - try the website "The Snipers Hide." A lot of knowledgeable guys there.

For cars, you just need to check out the websites dedicated to those cars/models. I have a 911TT and and VW diesel, both pretty esoteric cars when it comes to working on them by yourself. No worries, those sites have DIYs on almost everything you can imagine to do in your own garage.

Never mind just learning, you can save a boatload of money by checking out how to do some of that stuff yourself. Eg, for an oil change on my 911, a stealership once quoted me....wait for it....$480. I asked if free prostitutes came with this while I waited. Guy actually laughed on the phone. I now change my own oil in an hour for around $100, and thats using 9 qts of the best oil money can buy. Not only that, Im sure the job is done right. All four plugs torqued to spec, quart poured down the filter housing to build up pressure faster, etc.

I actually have been thinking a lot about this.

My father is excellent at mechanics and some carpentry. He entirely re-wired our old farm house back in 1999.

My uncle is an expert mechanic for almost anything and works for John Deere.

I started learning some mechanics when I worked on our family farm for a few summers.

That was when I realized, that I want to learn the things on your list.

I would add these to the list:

Cooking (general) Electronics/Computer Programming Networking

I have seen how a man who is good at cooking can be extremely beneficial for increasing social rank.

Also, one might consider formal dancing.

Dancing can be in many ways a huge opportunity to demonstrate alpha traits to a woman. If you ever watch the James Bond movies or whatever alpha example you prefer, there is almost always a dance scene before the sex scene with his main attraction.

I would love to see more sidebar material on this.

I do fishing, construction and plumbing from the above mentioned, currently working on Hunting/Marksmanship.

About fishing there are quite few big local forums that I frequent, I learned a lot there, also found people to fish/travel with.

About plumbing- it is not that complicated actually you can just use Youtube for basic stuff.

Hunting is kinda hard because you need to be part of a hunting team in order to hunt legally here, however the ones that have free places are just too far away from the capital. So currently it is on hold/wishful thinking.

About construction- there is great local forum that is called DYI. You can ask everything form simple things how to fix basics in the kitchen up to building your own home.

Other useful skill that I try to learn is Wine making, my last batch is quite good. The credit goes to my uncle.

I can also add Mountainbiking and Skiing as good options. Best ressouces for MTB is pinkbike and http://www.imbikemag.com/ also http://www.sheldonbrown.com/wheels.html- the great site with a ton of info- you would learn how to maintain and fix your bike there. Biking is better then jogging and you can meet one of the most hardcore IDGF mofos on the trails.

Skiing is great for approaching hot girls, however I suggest to find good instructor and learn it with his help. I noticed that fatties and typical "not-fun" city type women does not ski or board- they are either too afraid or it is too hard for them to learn it, so it is great natural pre-selection at your disposal.

Hunting and firearms seem to be covered already, but for fishing: go find your nearest fly fishing shop. For the cost of a handful of flies, you will get a first-class lesson in the wheres and hows to fly fishing your local lakes and streams. The art of fly fishing can be done at any budget (from a couple hundred dollars to all you can spend), and there is no limit to learning and exploring and getting in touch with Nature.

Google. Seriously, that's all my dad ever did. He rehabbed houses and redid really everything including electrical and plumbing all just from just doing it. He also repaired many of our families car's again by using google and Youtube. So my advice for you is to get an old car or buy a broken down house and just fix it up. Whenever you aren't sure to what you should do, just use google and youtube as your guide. For most of these hobbies there aren't any specific guides, if you have a question look it up until you are satisfied that you have answered it.

I learned how to fix a lot of things on my car by watching youtube videos. After doing it only one or two times, you can do it from memory. It saves me a TON of money, plus I have peace of mind that it was done correctly (I trust my work more than anyone else).

Do research on how to shoot firearms. I know the state of Missouri offers beginning hunting classes FOR FREE, so that might be an option. If you have any friends that shoot, basic firearm marksmanship is critical before you start to learn hunting.

Yes, essential skills. I urge every RP or MGTOW swinging dick to learn most of these skills. Pick one or two then start. Tools are not that expensive and will return many many times over their cost. I even went back to community college and earned certificates in construction and cabinet making for ridiculous low prices per class. The instructors were fantastic and their shops already had the tools.

I also purchase a few guns and practice marksmanship and will start hunting next season. Currently, I fish, grow and gather some of my food as a hobby. I am learning snaring right now. As a RP man we have to be competent in a wide range of areas.

Prior to unplugging, I could not fix or build anything. Pretty sad. I was a whiny, incompetent beta boy with a fat belly and a terrible attitude. But, I did make enough money to quit the system and live my own life on my terms by specializing in a narrow field.

So my advice as an RP old dude to RP young men? Specialize your knowledge to make your pile of fuck you money (STEM major or whatever), do something your good at, but generalize your skill sets to be a Man. Build, create, repair, and make things. These skills do wet panties, big time.

When you've been doing something for a while, it seems pretty easy. So maybe I feel this way about hunting and shooting for this reason.

If I had to start out, I would buy a bolt action 22 long rifle with a scope. I would get a cheaper offering from a name brand, such as mossberg, marlin, or ruger.

I would then take a hunter safety course and take firearm safety VERY seriously.

Sadly, many of the men I know that did not have fathers or other family teach them gun safety as a kid stink at it, and are kind of aggressively ignorant towards it. For instance, my friend was cleaning a glock and sat it down with the barrel pointed toward me. I turned it away from me. He said "do you think i'm stupid, of course it is not loaded." He simply didn't know how stupid he sounded.

Once you have your hunting license/basic gun safety training. Buy some moderately priced shells and a gun cleaning kit and ear protection and head to a local gun range. It is great fun. Just plink like a kid, but safely. Look up shooting tips in between trips.

Then, when fall arrives, buy some orange, a license, and just go sit and wait on the squirrels to show up :) They will. And it isn't hard to clean and cook them.

Now, learning a bunch of stuff all at once would be daunting. So, I'd pick the few that you are a most interested in and perhaps are most accessible.

Within a few years, you can have easily moved up to a hunting rifle and be killing big game on the regular, so long as you aren't super picky about antler size and the like.

Then, while keeping that acquired skill, move on to something else, maybe pick up woodworking. That is something I did this summer. I started by simply wanting an interesting and nice entertainment system rack and realizing that all the ones I like cost > $500 and I could probably build a cool one for much less. So, I started reading a bit and walking around Home Depot and Lowes. I built a rack with the supports made out of iron pipe/joints and the shelves highly figured pine stained blood red. People are amazed it was my first piece.

Just know that you can learn, you can teach yourself, and it is okay to screw up (so long as you don't shoot someone!). Go have fun, it is an adventure, and being male is awesome in this regard.

Forget about Car Mechanic. Most cars are more computer than mechanical these days and many require specialized diagnostic software and stuff you can only get if you have a mechanic license and pay through the fucking nose.

An OBDII device will help you diagnose what the problem might be though fixing it is probably going to require an actual car mechanic these days.

Motorcycles are probably more something you can do mechanically on your own though as they aren't nearly as complex as a full blown car or truck.

If it's fishing, the best way to learn is go out and do it.

Hunting: Go with someone who knows what they're doing.

Marksmanship: Purchase a weapon, go to a local firing range, and seek instruction on learning to use and fire the weapon safely and accurately.

Woodworking, construction, other trades: The internet can teach you very basic stuff on this.

Car mechanics: Get a shop manual for your vehicle from its manufacturer and learn to do this stuff.

Ok, I'm going to fill you in on the missing piece on how to do everything you list:

Just fucking do it

There, it's that simple. You want to fix a car? Get a car that needs fixing, learn how to fix it. You learn by needing to do it, then doing it. However fixing a car is stupid these days, they're cheap and run forever and garages are cheap (per mile).

Repairing something in the house? Do it. Find it. Work out what it is. Read about it. Buy the tools. Fix the thing. If it breaks again you did it wrong. If it takes you 10 hours to fix a light bulb then that's fine. That's 10 hours of free learning, and afterwards you'll be able to confidently declare "oh, that's an edison screw fitting, you'll want a reflector in there" and people will look at you like you're some sort of god.

Woodwork... figure out what you want to make. Make it. It'll look awful and cost you a fortune, but you'll know a lot more than when you started.

The other stuff... do an introductory course.

But most of all... focus on what you love. Most things you list need 10 hours a week and a year to get good and 10 years to become an expert. You can't do all of them and get good. It takes time. Best make it something you're passionate about.

I can probably list 10 or 15 things similar to what you've mentioned (including perhaps 5 on your list) that I'm pretty good at. And it's taken decades. And yes, people look at me like I'm some sort of god but it's always for the simple fucking stuff like turning a screw the correct way rather than being able to do something like build a car from scratch.

For some of that stuff (construction, plumbing, etc.) one of the best ways is to help with a project. Trade your time and work for the knowledge. This works well with friends and family who have the skills (not so much with professionals who will feel like you're trying to take their job). For example, we were having the bathroom in my house re-tiled when I was younger. My uncle came to do it for us and only asked two things. 1: we feed him 2: I work with him. Now I know how to tile.

Another way is to jump in with a buddy. For example my friend and I own motorcycles. We have limited knowledge of anything beyond riding. I had some mechanical work I needed to get done but didn't wanted to avoid high shop costs. He offered to help even though he really didn't know any more than I did. Simply having someone to help keep you encouraged and laugh at mistakes with you is great. Through YouTube, Google searches, and good guesses we accomplished everything I needed. I learned a lot and saved hundreds of dollars.

Woodwork/carpentry you might be able to find a workshop adult education class at a community college or something for a small fee. Hard part with that is eventually you'll have to buy your own tools.

Fishing and hunting best would be to find a guy who does it and ask if you can tag along. Tell him it looks enjoyable an you'd love to try it out/ learn the ropes.

Marksmanship, but a gun and join a range

HVAC, no idea.

Like someone suggested if you find a subreddit for any of these things there will probably be a info page on getting into it. Find real life people to do it with ASAP though.

Your dad is supposed to teach you these things. I was mowing the lawn at 7, cleaning gutters and nailing down popped roofing shingles at 9, and I was changing oil in the car and dad's motorcycle at 14.
