It depends on how debilitating the issue is in everyday life and whether she has the sense to minimize its impact in relationships. Celiac disease and fibromyalgia may be terrible news for the individual, but they are far less destructive to the other party than bipolar or borderline.

I have experienced this myself. I got a girl of much higher SMV than I should be able to. There were many factors at play.

One I think she was inexperienced in the dating game. Two she recently immigrated from another country. Three she had emotional baggage from a shitty childhood.

There were factors on my side as well - I had been lifting consistently for a couple months, lost weight, improved my fashion, had a good social circle and was motivated towards my career goals. I was just a happy go lucky guy.

As the relationship went on, she sort of eroded a lot of that. She made increasing attempts to cut other women out of my life. I eventually stopped lifting due to stress at work, gained weight and had lost a lot of my social circle.

So it’s possible you saw a guy who started out great but is on a downturn, or maybe even just having a rough day/week as every guy does.

Ultimately, there are so many factors you will not be able to see on the surface. But your point remains true about the scratch and dent thing.

An interesting observation - this tends to play out another way in rural towns I think. I've lived in a handful of rural communities (2k population) and in each place I have seen that there are seemingly high SMV women dating seemingly low SMV men.

Here's my theory:

Rural towns have become their own scratch and dent sale macrocosm. The guys and gals who finish high school either go to work, go to college, or go to jail. The ones who return with a college degree often return with a SO on a marriage path. The high SMV men/women pair off quickly. This leaves a large pool of low-middling SMV men/women. The longer they remain in the pool, the lower their SMV drops. Women get pregnant; men pick up criminal charges; someone gets a meth habit...

The reason I say seemingly high SMV women is that they are hot (7+), but have, as described by OP, some tragic flaw. Usually a kid or a mental problem. These women are more likely to have an alcohol or pill problem than something like meth or heroin. They usually hold a job, but SMV decreases rapidly without one.

For men, the seemingly low SMV comes from one of a handful of things. For example, guy is objectively ugly; has a criminal record; has a drug problem (more likely a hard(er) drug); has kid(s); or can't hold a job/works a shitty job for peanuts.

Or in a nutshell, the men lack motivation and the women lack control. Seems like it would be easy pickings for a high SMV man to plate some hotties. But in the rural community, word gets around too fast. Observation - this is why high SMV (marriage-minded) men aren't moving to the country to find love. They'd have to get into the crowd by age 18-20 to have a prayer of catching a catch, so to speak.

So I think the scratch and dent sale often goes both ways. Women aren't totally oblivious to their flaws, especially if it's a kid. They also know that the only thing they have going for them is going to fade. No escape either - single mom from rural town has a rough time moving to a large city. Her best "escape" is to a larger, less rural town where she can lock down a better beta. Or she can conserve resources and stay put. She's probably got a steady job and a place of her own. She can move in her beta and bleed them dry one by one until she finds that refrigerator with the dents in the back where she doesn't have to see them, just think about them.
