TRP and depression

The most effective way to fight depression is to eat healthy food and work out. Couple of times a week go to the grocery store with some friends and get some meat to grill, yams maybe grill peaches and pineapple if you feel fancy. Also find a bro to workout with. Staying social and healthy us a great way to get outvof depression.

As someone who suffers from depression and was medicated for a few years before stopping...and a piece of survival training.

Often, self-rescue is the only option. Depression is a pit that not only drags you in but is also a pit that you'll willingly let yourself be pulled into. Other people can pull you out of that pit (temporarily) and medication can help you ignore how bad being in the pit is, but the only real way out (and stopping yourself being dragged back in) is to rescue yourself. Unfortunately the only way to do this is to figure it out yourself.

Anything that helps you no matter the source, use it. Eventually you'll find a way to stay out of the pit.

This is a bit tangental but there are parts of TRP that do really counteract my own depression. When I start to fall into that dark space of apathy and malaise once I reach a certain depth I realize that no one is coming to help me, and that is liberating. I can't rely on anyone but myself to crawl back up so I better dig my heels in now and start scaling mountains. You're given the options of sink or swim as a man. You can blame sinking on anyone and anything. Your parents, your upbringing, your circumstances, your depression, your PTSD, but at the end of the day you're still sinking and no one gives a flying fuck about a weak man that can't support himself let alone others.

However the part of TRP that women are basically succubi that you can never trust still depresses the fuck out of me. Some companionship on this lonely road would be nice. I'm still working on reconciling TRP with a lot of other philosophies I have.

Recognizing the problems within yourself is huge. While depression can be crippling, it's important to remember how powerful you are as a man. You are always capable of improving. You are the only one with the power to make your life better. You, and only you, are in control of your happiness and destiny.

Keep on keeping on bud, and continue on the path of self-improvement. I've never dealt with the crippling depression, but you don't have much of a choice other than to keep fighting. There is no alternative. The struggle to be great is never easy, but it is the only path worth taking.

Glad things are getting better, I know exactly where you're coming from. The two biggest things that helped me were lifting heavy and eating paleo. Nothing wrong with average workouts or runs, but as a man you need to lift heavy. All sorts of hormones are released which are vital to a man's overall health. I don't have the time right now to include any links but I'm sure they won't be difficult for you to find.

If you don't have a workout partner and you don't want to go alone...get there early in the morning. No one's gonna be there to judge you so there's nothing to worry about. Test levels are highest early AM and if you compound that by going in in a fasted state (check out intermittent fasting) you'll boost test levels and start building serious muscle.

Paleo is difficult but well worth it. It's incredible how great we as humans can feel by eating only the foods that we have adapted to eat. Robb Wolf, Chris Kresser and Mark's Daily Apple are great resources.

In addition to trying to adopt a red pill lifestyle something that really helped me snap out of depression and continue to build motivation and self-discipline was daily cold showers.

Here's a Psychology Today article outlining the research showing that it's one of the most effective methods for treating anxiety and depression.

I have one every morning and after powerlifting training. They make me feel like a man, give me a spring in my step and aid in recovery.

Sounds a lot like the path I took and am still on. I did 18 months of therapy and then ran into TRP and Stoicism. It's funny how I relate my therapy as "Sitting with a strong male and having him call me on my bullshit" which is really what I should have gotten in my childhood.

It's great being able to have self-worth, accept your place in the world, and know how things work. Before this I was so confused and complacent. I also notice a huge different in how I deal with my friends and family, though I haven't gotten out to get the ladies you have. Good work.

I look at them for what they are

This is the biggest difference. We should be thinking "Women enjoy fucking, they want to fuck me, we'll do that and be done". With the friends I made back in my issues, there is this definite subtext of "I'm not worthy for women to fuck, they wouldn't enjoy fucking me, I'll just stay here uselessly".

All my depression disappeared as soon as I found TRP. It took a while to internalize it all, but it was the trigger that pushed my depression away. I'll forever be grateful for that.

Hey OP

I'm a BD type 2 and I'm going through a depressive wave right now. I'm still accomplishing things, but they suddenly feel hollow and without meaning. I find that depression is a condition that can overwhelm me and it sucks. You might feel the same and if you do than from another in the muck I say listen to your therapist. You hired them for a reason. They know great coping mechanisms.

Been there, went through that and overcame. The best thing about a RP lifestyle is that it's self reinforcing. The more you lift, exercise, eat clean and play to win, the more testosterone your body produces. Boosts in testosterone leads to more confidence, more productive workouts, increased performance and success with women.

Women and weak men will always try to talk men out of improving themselves because they feel threatened. Don't let them stop you from fulfilling your potential.

Studies have shown that low T can lead to symptoms of depression in men, so you are definitely heading on the right path to recovery. Good luck!

Let me tell you a story,

The week I graduated from college I was laid off from an internship which I thought had turned into a full time position.

I'm also prone to depression. I am also great at creating opportunities for myself in life.

For example the gym thing. I hated going to a commercial gym, too crowded, too many strangers, aggression, etc.

So I thought outside the box. Hey I like CrossFit so I started lurking /r/crossfit and read some article bashing the shit out of CrossFit. In the comments section someone mentions how expensive it is $$$$ but someone counters that you can offer to do labor barter for free membership at many of these gyms (as they are small businesses) and this gives me the idea to do it in my area. I email several businesses and most say no, but 2 say yes. Of the one I go to, I start working out, lose weight, gain muscle, make friends. They eventually hire me part time, I am able to support myself on this.

It's also great networking and I am able to find internships and jobs through this network of people.

My life isn't perfect and it certainly isn't where I want it to be but its a whole lot better than where it was.

Thanks for posting. TRP has been a huge part of me winning the battle against my own depression. It sounds like you are on the right path. I agree with most of the sentiments in the responses. Keep seeing your therapist (is it a cognitive behavioral? that worked wonders for me) also, accept the fact that you will falter or fail from time to time and that is okay. Don't beat yourself up. You are fighting an uphill battle and are bound to stumble. Finding simple routines has been immeasurably helpful as well as working out, medication, supplements (vitamin D, methyl folate). Just do whatever it takes to make yourself happy. You are your number 1 priority and until you are happy and taken care of, fuck everything else.

I have no experience with severe depression. But here are my thoughts on the most productive way to view minor and moderate depression: 95% of "depressed" people do not have a medical problem; they're just having an adaptie response to poor life circumstances.

Think about it. If your life sucks and you're walking around feeling great, something is wrong with you. You're not experiencing the negative emotions that will incite you to improve your situation. I recently went through two months of moderate depression, and for good reason - I had a major career setback, caught an STD, was betrayed by someone close, and generally had a fucking terrible stretch of life.

How did I get through it? By sucking it up and improving my situation. I've made a lot of progress (life progress, not "emotional healing") in the past month and I feel a lot better. That's how you cure depression.

Note that this isn't medical advice. I have no experience or knowledge for anyone suffering from capital-D Depression. But as far as the non-medical problem of feeling like shit because your life is shit, the way to fix that is to make your life stop being shit.
