You will need to dig deep into your childhood to figure out when it was exactly that you decided you are inferior. It could have been a number of subtle put downs from your family, a traumatic event, something someone in a position of authority told you as a kid and you believe it to be an immutable truth.
Once you have a list of 3-5 such events, go back and relive these emotions. You need to feel them in your body. Once you do, sit down and think about what benefits, opportunities or lessons you may have derived from these events?
Let me give you an example. My mom was a typical mom. Every time I'd go out, she'd point out something wrong about me. Maybe my shirt was dirty, my pants ripped, my hair uncombed, whatever. It was always "Don't go out with a dirty shirt, what are all the other kids going to think of you?" And so on and so forth. That's enough to cause anyone to be self conscious and anxious about everything they do and only worry about pleasing others as opposed to pleasing themselves.
So I reframed these events as: Ok mom, I tried living life your way, following all the rules you told me ai needed to follow and I ended up being miserable. So the lesson I learned from all of this is that only I know what's best for me. Not my mom, not my dad, not society, no one else.
The final step is to see the people who caused you this trauma in a new light. I knew my mom was insecure herself and she was projecting her insecurities over to me. I understood and forgave her because she taught me a lesson at the end.
So find out what event caused you to feel so inferior and try to reframe it in the way I showed you. You will know when you are over a traumatic event when you become grateful it happened rather than wishing it never did.

I used to think I was the only guy in the world thay got roasted by his mom every day... I actually think this mom-behavior is a common origin story for boys to grow up with low self-esteem or become nice guys and people pleasers. Remember that your mother is you main model for femininty while growing up. So your main model for femininty is constantly telling you things that make you feel inferior. So that eventually becomes your default self-image. Naturally, you don't want to feel inferior, you want to gain your mothers approval, so you try to please the feminine. Then this dynamic translates to the other women you encounter in your life.

damn that's deep

I close relate to that notion. I didn't have any girl friends either to 'replace' the feminine presence of my mom, so that didn't help either.

Yeah def repetitive and i agree i wish he posted his sources as well, that bothered me that he didn't do that. Its def legit tho
He pulls a lot of material from letting go - David r Hawkins. The process is mentioned in that. But then he includes like breathwork and meditation and some other things as well.
Letting go
Shadow work
Meditation/breathwork
Theres also another book called waking the tiger: healing trauma

If this don’t help you can check out and practice the dark triad, the illimitableman, has a good blog for this. Also check out Patrice O’Neal on YouTube listen to his advice on seduction also.
What I would say is solving your mental issues is not always done by digging in your past, it’s about what you do right now. Even if you are scared, make your self talk to hotties, be willing to embarrass yourself and be vulnerable in front of a 100 babes if that’s what it takes. Push yourself and do the work.

Yeah I can name like 10 events right now that made me feel worthless and inferior. And that's just the ones I can recollect right now, let alone if I give it some time...
I'll give it a shot to work through that method.

Read “The Laws of Human Nature” by Robert Greene while you’re at it. It heavily talks about this and can help you understand a lot about human behavior

Nah man, I get it. The issue is if a parent is always telling you something is wrong with how you dress, act, look, whatever, you grow up insecure and only worrying about what other think of you. It's a self esteem killer.
[–]AdventurousParsnip5 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Agreed. Parents used to try to put me into their own mold, and any deviation from that was punished with degradation. I couldn't turn myself into my own person, in who I wanted to be, because I'd be put down.
[–]financeer24 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
This was a really thought out response. I do find myself suffering from inferiority complex as well. I noticed it gets instinctively triggered around an attractive girl or even a group of people of having fun and laughing (strangely).
Not OP, but what would recommend for more information about this?

Start here:

The next step would be to start writing a letter of recommendation for yourself as if you were a woman writing to another woman for why she should date you. You are only allowed to write nice and positive things no matter how hard it seems at first. Keep rereading it and correcting it, adding to it every day. Keep reading it and believing it until it becomes a second nature.

There are some traumatic events I will never be grateful for. Sometimes, some things should just never have happened and there's no grand redemption waiting at the other end.

One of my closest friends from college was and still is in a very similar situation to you my friend. Like yourself he struggled with self esteem issues and was the type of guy that wasn’t necessarily bad looking but his lack of confidence showed when he tried approaching women. I witnessed this man do a complete 180 in his life after he got so fed up being the only virgin in our friend group (we never belittled him for it, in fact we always tried to be wing-men for him) he started working out and lost a noticeable amount of weight and started hitting on girls. To our surprise the awkward shy guy we once knew, switched up and starts crushing it with the ladies. When we asked him what changed his only words were, “I’m tired of not trying, enough was enough no one was gonna change me but me” and I don’t think I’ve ever respected him as much as I did then.
Morale of the story is even if you’re down just know that no professional is gonna be able to do what only you can. The last thing I’ll leave you with is 10 years from now you’re either gonna look back with regret or with satisfaction, which one it’ll be is up to you now! Good luck my friend you are not alone
Edit: my friend is not currently a god with the ladies but he gets frequent dates
A lot of those stories indeed contain weight loss. I have never been overweight and in fact am quite athletic. So I gotta pump that self esteem from somewhere else.
“I’m tired of not trying, enough was enough no one was gonna change me but me”
Yeah I definitely feel what he means there. Knowing what to do is one thing, but having the mental strength to overcome that barrier is another.
Good luck my friend you are not alone

Therapy?
On a second note, I used to go to therapy to fix panic attacks and an anxiety disorder. That helped, maybe I can apply the same methods to 'social' anxiety?
[+]AdventurousParsnip5 -7 points-6 points-5 points 5 years ago (24 children) | Copy Link
What can they do for me? I would feel like I'd be an even greater failure if I required professional help to do something that a lot of teens can do naturally.
[–]kell_fire 12 points13 points14 points 5 years ago (16 children) | Copy Link
Teens are very insecure. Regardless, everyone benefits from therapy. It sounds like your self-esteem issues are a bit deeper and professionals can help with that.
[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 5 years ago* (9 children) | Copy Link
2nding this. sounds like you need therapy. but this isnt like WOW CRaZY GUY NEEDS THERAPY. Its outrageously sexy for a person to have all their shit together, even more so mentally.
I actually recently messed up something cool (she also could have used a little inner work), because I was getting really self conscious. It changed the mood for sure.
She was 100% out of my league (Sidenote- refuting the alpha Chad mentality, get those incel labels out of your head and see people as humans. All different. Most not even trying to be their appearance, and are striving for something else just as you.)
But mainly, I kept second guessing myself instead of just acting and being me. Therapy I have been chasing would help me form a better internal identity which I've also been working for.
So although I'm currently out of, I have been in and plan on returning to therapy.
Source 25 M Not a 10 but definitely not lower than a 8 because of my external image(insides are a 9 for sure. ;) Been there, done that.
PS Watch out because I was also in these shoes and 4/5 women I've been with longer term since college were all wildly mentally unstable and ended up using me for years, taking advantage of my insecurities. so this happens a lot. Don't just give yourself to anyone.
There are troves of women who's sole life purpose is to drain men for their gain. *Edit And tons don't like men, don't like anyone, and some are totally down for you and you alone at the end of the day.

There are troves of women who's sole life purpose is to drain men for their gain.
This year, I found this out for myself too. And that was the last straw. I dont know if I can ever be intimate with a girl ever after all of this.
What did you learn in therapy?
Last girl I was talking about literally told me she only sees men as money and customers and basically walking human garbage, to get thru her job. She's a lite fetish sw and stripper. 🙃 Work... a... job?? But my thoughts aside she tightened that up with "Well not you, you're sweet." and what's fucked up is either she was an A Class Succubus or I could actually see right thru the bullshit that this 19yo girl was actually just scared of this harsh fucking world and knows the true dangers of it, but has never/sparingly experienced REALLY unconditional love from a human being.
Now I'm lonely again this week c:
hahahah
Rerailing- my favorite therapy tools would be mindfulness, meditation, chakra/chi/energy body work (which has many many many truths and connections to both science and eastern religions/philosophies) ESPECIALLY breathwork. This is the biggest wow. We don't breathe right, simple as that. Which causes the brain to just work not correct at all.

So you reckon it's a deeply rooted problem that only professionals can help sort out? Man....
[–]kell_fire 2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Well considering how you’re talking about this I would say yes. Therapy is something to be proud of.
[–]AdventurousParsnip5 -1 points0 points1 point 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
IDK man.... I will think about it but I am afraid it will do nothing for me.
I lived most of my life saying how damaged I was, but also being such a happy face on my public life.
Not until I started being immersed in a social life (which I hate now, no one is doing self work like youd think), and doing heavy psychedelics often (also don't reccomend this), I really didn't even realize I was that mentally unwell. But it's amazing what I have learned from years of professional help since 16 in and out. Like the shit I can analyze my family with and realize "Wow you all have been putting me down because I have this this and this opportunity, and you're all sad and angry about xyz"
[–]GrandMasterB19 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Keyword here is "seems." Many of these types of people learn from a young age to portray a fake security that appears confident, but many of these people have an extremely low self image, which is why they've put so much effort into portraying an image. Even some of the women that are objectively gorgeous are often insecure about their looks or other aspects of their life too. As you get older you get better at seeing through people and picking up on these nuances. Trust me, most people aren't authentically self-confident.

[–]biscuit310 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
Couple thoughts.
1.) You're overestimating teens. If some teens have high self-esteem, it's much more likely the result of the environment they were raised in than something they figured out on their own.
2.) Are there other situations where you benefitted from the advice of someone who knew more than you? For example, did you have guides when you started going to the gym, either in person or through videos or books? I bet you did, and I bet you didn't beat yourself up for not figuring out 1000+ years of exercise science on your own.
Therapy is exactly the same. You might need to hunt to find a therapist you click with, but there's nothing wrong with seeking the guidance of people who can help you grow. Think of it like getting a trainer at the gym. And even though the other posters here have suggested great exercises to try, since you'll be training your brain, hiring a professional might be even more helpful since they'll be able to offer an outsider perspective and notice details you're missing as you work on building your self-esteem.
That voice in your head is lying to you. You're just as worthy as any of us. You got this!
[–]AdventurousParsnip5 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Even if they fake confidence, their friendships and sexual relationships will make them actually confident. I never had those to begin with, so I cannot base social confidence on anything.

So, I think you're suffering from what they call cognitive distortions, which are basically negative thought patterns. I suffered from these, too - they're very common. Just from reading through your post and responses, I think you're displaying "All or Nothing" thinking. It sounds like you're suggesting that if you're not the Alpha Chad, then you're a total failure. That's a false dichotomy - both are illusions. I think you're also "Catastrophizing" a little bit. There's no reason you couldn't blend in and be accepted by other people, but you seem to believe it's impossible.
So, I think you need to work on your inner and outer issues. For the inner, you need to learn how to recognize cognitive distortions when they're happening and learn how to counter them. There are lots of exercises for that, but this is where a good therapist would be really helpful. I first learned about cognitive distortions in a book called "Feeling Good" by David Burns, so you could check that out, too.
For the outer, you need to work on building your social skills. Not just with women, but just in terms of talking to people and making conversation. It will be easier to do this if you're also working on your cognitive distortions, so that you don't start calling yourself a total failure just because someone didn't smile back (maybe they're just having a shitty day). And the inner and outer work will reinforce each other - you will build confidence as you interact with other people.
One other thing that I think might help is to remember that if you want a friend, you have to be a friend. That's kind of a subtle shift, but it involves setting your own needs aside and getting interested in the lives of others. An easy way to keep a conversation going is to be genuinely interested in the other person. What do they think, what makes them tick, what makes them laugh? Shift that internal focus from your feelings to theirs. If you focus on meeting people and learning about them, you will help build your confidence.

I know this is a bit cliché, but at some point you have to just stop caring what other people think of you. Not because people are attracted to uncaring assholes, but because when you stop caring and stop trying to act a certain way to impress people, you can actually be yourself. If you like who you are, other people are bound to also.

Same. I fell victim to the boys are pervs, boys are dumb, boys must serve women, etc. messages in the media as a youngster. I thought that was how it was. Bullying and constantly moving schools in elementary school didnt help either. Focus on yourself. Notice that people are jusg people. You have beliefs and thought patterns that make you feel inferior to women or even other people. Notice these thoughts, realize that they arent truth, and push out of your comfort zone daily! When you realize thoughts arent who you are, you'll feel that youre purely love. Meditation helps a ton! Be mindful and stay present babyyyy. Know that youre only limiting urself. No one else is. You decide your self worth. No one else does.
[–]MisterShogunate 4 points5 points6 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
You don't build confidence by talking or thinking. You build confidence by doing. It's experience that tells yourself you are worth something. Yes you can "talk to yourself" about being confidence, but you can only work with whatever you have. Imaging trying to build a skyscraper. The skyscraper is your confidence, the concrete is your experience and your mind is the molder. You can build your skyscraper as high as you can, but if you are using too little concrete, it will just break down. Now if you have a lot of concrete, you can build that sky scraper as high as you want.
Stop complaining, start doing. What you did was great, but you need to do more. You need to actually build experience when talking to people. You will get rejected, but you will also learn social skills and have a deeper understanding of how people perceive value. You are over-valuing hot girls because you don't have an understanding of what it's like to be with one.
[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 5 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
I (20F) have always felt pretty good in my skin, and without meaning to sound cocky, I have been pursued by good looking/charming people my whole life. All of my girlfriends are good-looking and smart people as well, so if I understand correctly, we'd be the kind of girls you'd want to attract.
Here's a few ways to grab a pretty girls attention, wether you are conventionally attractive or not:
Pitying yourself and your situation is a sure way of never progressing. Everybody has something to offer. Some girls suck, too. Just because they're pretty, doesn't mean you actually want them around you or that they're good for you. They'll make you feel even shittier. Don't envy what others have, that can instantly be felt in your energy. If you aren't happy with who you are, it's difficult to make others see the value in having you around.
Good luck!
And this is exactly what make me feel lesser. Attractive people are around other attractive people all the time. They get so much positive validation. They live lives vastly different from mine, I could never relate to them and vice versa. Why would they even be friends with me?
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
I should say that not all my friends are conventionally attractive. This isn't high school anymore, looks are not everything. My friends can all hold their own in a conversation, are funny, and have a hobby/interests that are personal to them and that they are talented at. This is what made me become friends with them. That's what charm and confidence is: knowing your strengths, and capitalizing on them. You might never be a "Chad", but no sensible person will want to be with someone who only has looks to offer. Walk tall, make eye-contact, make your presence felt from the second you interact with someone. If people don't believe you when you talk about your interests, then show them. Actions speak louder than words.
I know my strengths but people don't care that much. Maybe I am either stupid or dealing with the wrong people, but I never found people reacting positively to my strengths, usually they try to downplay them or so.
Then turn other peoples negative energies as a positive motivating drive to better yourself. Prove them wrong!

Others have already given some good advice directly relating to self esteem. It's good advice and I don't feel I need to add anything there.
Regarding gym socialization, I used to wonder why other people at the gym seemed so friendly with each other when my pattern was to show up, warm up in a quiet corner of the mat room, move heavy things in the weight room, then do laps of the pool to cool down and then leave. I want there to be social so people politely left me to do my thing.
If you want gym friends, join classes and show up early when people are waiting around if you can, bring a friend and have a loud conversation about how you find free weights intimidating or how you don't have a strong opinion about CrossFit. Somebody will magically appear to assist you and introduce you to everybody. Everybody at the gym was new and intimidated at some point and the opportunity to be a mentor to somebody else in the final stage for a lot of people in feeling like they finally fit in. If that is a bit too intimidating, you can pin a message to the gym notice board of they have one saying you are looking for gym friends for the purpose of staying motivated. You'll be surprised how many people are looking for the same thing.
Bonus feature: if you befriend girls who are at the start of the process of losing a while lot of weight you'll be less intimidated of them as the get hotter because you've already established yourself as their friend. When you compare the hot girls you are approaching, you'll realise that they are flawed humans who have to work and make sacrifices to look like that. Sometimes you can only really internalize that information when you've seen it first hand.

Whenever you feel this about yourself, this senses of inferiority, watch it but try not to judge it or run from it. Try to see it as something that's simply happening. Not something that definitely your existence. The only thing that is true, is that you exist. That's it. That's the only thing that is actually true. Everything after that is just "acting". You're in a role you've practiced for so long, you see it as reality. The best tip i give anyone in life is to just be. When I used to go to bars and clubs, my main thing was just positioning. I'd just put myself next to a girl, or press up against them without thinking. No intentions, no excuses. Like I want to stand right here and just be.

My problem is that i look younger for my age and i had no father figure to teach me how to be masculine...
The most masculine ive been is just when im upset. Hence i think women don't see me as a man sometimes. Gonna start reading books about small talk and wit to get a jump start in my social life again and i hope you find that magic too!

Do you even lift bro? I think going to the gym regularly will help you wonders. You leave there feeling like you can accomplish anything. Therapy may help too, Freud once said "You are who you think you are"- If you think you are inferior, that is the vibe people will receive.

Don't rush it, but you have to practice. Maybe try approaching the nerdy types first, they are usually less intimidating, then move on to more intimidating ladies. You also need to be a good talker, be able to direct the flow of the conversation without getting tired.
Create a cool, confident personality when approaching them and be ready for the worst embarrassment ever! It won't happen, but being at peace with embarrassing yourself will give you the confidence to approach ladies.
Tell yourself "people are looking at me approaching these ladies... And I don't care".
Good luck bro.

Stop putting women on a pedastal. Beautiful women have pussies that feel the exact same as ugly women.
