As a woman I can say that majority of my girl friends and I fantasize about men asking women out more organically versus over the internet (social media, dating apps etc.). Love a good old fashion ask out :) good on you buddy.

Excuse me sir or ma'am
but I couldn't help but notice.... are you a "girl"?? A "female?" A "member of the finer sex?"
Not that it matters too much, but it's just so rare to see a girl around here! I don't mind, no--quite to the contrary! It's so refreshing to see a girl online, to the point where I'm always telling all my friends "I really wish girls were better represented on the internet."
And here you are!
I don't mean to push or anything, but if you wanted to DM me about anything at all, I'd love to pick your brain and learn all there is to know about you. I'm sure you're an incredibly interesting girl--though I see you as just a person, really--and I think we could have lots to teach each other.
I've always wanted the chance to talk to a gorgeous lady--and I'm pretty sure you've got to be gorgeous based on the position of your text in the picture--so feel free to shoot me a message, any time at all! You don't have to be shy about it, because you're beautiful anyways (that's just a preview of all the compliments I have in store for our chat).
Looking forwards to speaking with you soon, princess!
EDIT: I couldn't help but notice you haven't sent your message yet. There's no need to be nervous! I promise I don't bite, haha
EDIT 2: In case you couldn't find it, you can click the little chat button from my profile and we can get talking ASAP. Not that I don't think you could find it, but just in case hahah
EDIT 3: look I don't understand why you're not even talking to me, is it something I said?
EDIT 4: I knew you were always a bitch, but I thought I was wrong. I thought you weren't like all the other girls out there but maybe I was too quick to judge
EDIT 5: don't ever contact me again whore
EDIT 6: hey are you there?

That's awesome that you had the courage to do that
I'd like to give some advice if that's okay because usually I just get shot down because I guess I'm a woman and I can't possibly know what women like LOL
But one of the absolute worst things for me and my friends was getting hit on while we were at work.
Like it was something we all talked about all the time and it was a major problem. Because for most of us we absolutely had to be nice and didn't have a choice. I mean there's always a choice but you get what I mean. Good customer service is always expected.
I really don't think what you did was wrong. It was just a nice compliment and it didn't sound perverted at all. But just hoping other people see this before thinking about doing the same thing in a more aggressive manner

Saaaame. I was cashiering and a guy kept asking for my number and I had a whoooole line. Eventually he just wrote it on a piece of paper but literally that emoji you used was my face. Usually I keep a straight face but it made me really really uncomfortable.

[–]pineapplepj 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I was going to say this, thank you! I loathe being hit on at work. I have no choice but to be nice and would have to be careful about rejecting a customer because they could get angry and I'd risk having a stalker that knows where I work and can cost me my job. I agree, OP didn't do anything wrong with his approach but most women prefer not to be approached at work
[–]BeeshGame 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
I'd agree on most cases, but actually disagree with as a universal rule. I had one instance a few weeks ago where a waitress repeatedly hinted that she wanted my phone number.
It was around 8 pm, at a pizza place and I was eating alone. When she first came to my table, I just flirted jokingly but made light-hearted conversation and gave intentful, non-verbal cues (looked her up and down, smiled with my eyes, spoke slowly and in a flirty, teasing kind of way, etc.), but never verbally complimented her for being cute or anything overt that might make her feel either creeped out or slutty and judged by her coworkers if she were to engage in front of them. Basically, I was verbally polite and non-verbally intentful. She then would find excuses to come to my table, start up conversation, and then when I'd end the conversation or look at my phone, she'd leave, and come back and repeat. She refilled my water cup three times for reference, even though I'd only drink through about half of it.
Eventually, right before she left after we talked for a little and after I'd left my tip, she said "is there anything else you want to ask me?", which is basically feeding me her number on a silver spoon. My dumbass said "no, not that I can think of" because I was taken aback; I've never had a girl be so up front with me, and she looked kinda put off and confused, and just stood there looking at me, but I snapped out of it and said "well actually I'm looking for friends to hang out with since I'm new here as well, and you seem like a cool person. What's your phone number?", and she perked up and wrote her phone number down on the customer receipt.
Granted, the phone number didn't turn into a date either because (A) I flaked on the first date (she tried to set it the very next day and I had to turn in a few job apps that were due, so I denied it right after she asked), or (B) I tried to set it up for the day after too quickly (which could have been the killer because she basically made such an overt first move, and I didn't take the time to get to learn more about her over text because I thought "she's already interested in me, why put in the effort to meet over text when we can just do so in person", so there's a chance it may have made her feel slutty by me trying to make the first date move as quickly as I did and not leaving the ball in her court).
That being said, I was still happy that a waitress came onto me, something I previously thought was indisputably obnoxious. Maybe in your experience, no guy has ever been good at it, or your job doesn't allow you enough time for a guy to contextualize himself and make a good impression?
In summary, if your social skills are good enough though and you non-verbally show interest, and the context allows for some conversation, I think you can ask for that phone number.
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I mean in a case like this sure its different...
She obviously was into you. Also waitress jobs allow you and kind of make you socialize with your customers so its different.
Imo the general rule would still be not to hit on someone at work. Lol bc you really don't know if they're doing it bc they have to or want to.
There's exceptions. Your case was different & i think most people can tell the difference. She clearly wanted you to engage. Like you said "is there anything else you want to ask me" might as well have been "ask me for my number" if the conversation is naturally flowing from both sides & it happens spontaneously then yes. But even then...still risky. Everything you described to me that she did sounded like normal waitress behavior up untill the question. I too would agree that's a green light. Of course I wasn't there. So only you know how the conversation went & obviously you are right. She gave you her number.
But yeah like if you're in a grocery store its best to just....not. IMO. I can list the reasons why but I think its obvious. It would happen to me SEVERAL times a day at work. To a point where I started dressing "ugly" not doing my makeup bc i felt super uncomfortable when any man was around at work. Its okay to be friendly. What OP did is okay as well. Anything further though is questionable. Employees are expected to be nice & friendly.
But again that's just my opinion.
[–]BeeshGame 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Thank you for your reply. I think you bring up a good point. I'd agree that most of the time it's a bad idea, and in reality you shouldn't have to rely on waitresses, who's job it is to talk to you, for your dating life.
And I know that usually isn't the context people want to be hit on, especially given your coworkers being there, you being stressed out and probably being supervised, etc. That being said, I think in a very few rare instances, it is okay, but a vast majority of the time, in order to avoid making others feel uncomfortable, it might be a good general policy to avoid it.
There are many much better alternatives and contexts to meet women, e.g. social circles, cold approaches, tinder, etc.

Great work! I was deathly afraid of girls because I stuttered, was depressed, have ADD, and had body image issues... also, didn't want to make anyone uncomfortable.
Stayed too long / showed too much interest are the most likely issues.
Keys in hand, rocking back foot, body angle, false time constraints, projected deep diaphragmatic speaking (talk as deep and relaxed as you can, makes women randy, your voice is your persona).
Better to ask them out for an instadate on their break.
For store workers, I do the "I'm in business school and need to some reverse interviews about your job. Would you have time for a brief chat?" I love baristas and restaurant hostesses since we get on famously. I am not opposed to the stock girls at Trader Joe's because they're usually cool.
Don't ask for digits, exchange emails/contact info. Sometimes I don't even do that, just say "I gotta run now. Let's meet here the same time X in 2 days on X." It shows confidence and she won't forget if there was massive chemistry.
Just remember not to be a jerk because you're a customer and they feel compelled to talk to you and they get hit on a million time a day... so be cool and unique. Try a customer next time.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 5 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link
Yea no I got one for you straight up BUT it’s on some man shit. Work... go volunteer ANYWHERE not at a dead end job though like a mechanic plumber electrician hvac anything where u see 90 percent men doing that job. See your job right now as a job to get a job spend 10 hours a day 5 days a week at LEAST dedicated to this! THEN I dare you to come back in a month and tell me you don’t have a job ok? Even if it’s volunteering with no pay right now u don’t need money see learning as your pay. Watch what happens.

Nice i literal ran a way the first time i asked a girl for her phone number im not proud of it but i apologized it didnt go well they kept me around for a month just so i wouldnt feel bad and than they had there friends text me to stop talking to her lol
[–]agnostic_nexus 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Great job on the work up! Sometimes when you have to hype yourself up too much beforehand it can make you get in your head like that, just remember to not make the approach about you, make it about them.
You shouldn't approach a girl to get some response out of it yourself, but approach her to compliment and nothing more. Girls can sense your intentions/vibe immediately. It's a more lasting impression if you compliment her sincerely, and leave w/o "pursuing" her.
Then next time you're in the store smile like you remember her and maybe start a conversation then.

You do that with a mask on? Personally, I’m not seeing how it’s going to come across well all masked up, unable to read people’s faces, voices muffled, etc. I’m curious what that looks like.

Am I the only one seeing the same post at least once a week? Jesus, it's like the quit smoking page. If you're attracted to someone, no matter the gender, start a conversation. P.S. Fuck all the women who think a male has to start the convo, or that it's more pleasant for a male to ask than a female. Grow up. Make a move either way. Save some time. We only have so much of it.

Congratulations. Keep at it. Remember the 3 second rule.

I like your pickup line (I’m a girl). “I liked your shirt and wanted to meet you” is friendly an non-threatening. I’d go with that again next time, if applicable.
[–]dalen52 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Pro tip for next time. Take what you did and be proud but realize all the ways it went wrong. Don’t be outcome dependent, act quicker before you have time to think, be proud that you tried, talking to strangers is one of the hardest things in life. Keep in mind even if she was single and found you attractive, people aren’t expecting to meet the love of their life at the grocery store. They have a different mindset. I’m so so proud of you. I hope you do good next time.
Also, she’s not rejecting you. In the right circumstances she would be madly in love with you. Some people have a “nurse” mindset and are looking for someone to take care of. There’s no way of you knowing.
Improve your life, make friends, have hobbies, and the right people will come around.
Trust me it gets easier after this. Good job my man🏅

And I think the next step I have to try once I get used to stopping and asking starngers is complimenting, they might receive it awkwardly at 1st but, it's alright gotta beat the fear of judging on the way!

Pro-tip: The intro line means absolutely nothing. The conversation and body language absolutely matters, but you can break the ice with virtually anything and have the same chances for success. Sharing in case this helps others with anxiety to make the open
[–][deleted] 5 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
[–]Just-Drew-It 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
One of the last pickups I had before I met my wife was in a grocery store too. I was on the phone with my earbuds in, and this girl locked eyes with me for a moment. I literally just said to my friend, "yeah this girl here is beautiful, I'm gonna let you go, I want to say hi to her" and she immediately laughed and conversation started right away. Dumb, strategy-less shit like that works just as well as anything else
[–]Just-Drew-It 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
When I met my wife, I had JUST gotten into online dating. I met her online a couple months after starting. I was soooo excited about it, as I was cleaning up without having to scour the city. I barely got a chance to dabble in it when I met her. She ruined it! :D
I'm quite happy and settled with a family now. No regrets. I have a high enough body count for three lifetimes anyway
