Honestly for me, it was getting back in contact with friends.

At the end of high school I ended up getting with a girl who had formerly been dating a friend, he was cool with it too be totally clear, but other friends were not shy about saying that they thought it was in bad taste.

However it wasn’t that disappointment that caused me to stop talking with them, but just a lack of focus on them, on my part. Between work and my ex I had stopped talking to them, and because of me and my ex having polar opposite schedules we began to see each other less and less, especially so after she moved about an hour out from me. We got into fights over a lot of small things. We still were very deeply in love, but our frustrations were starting to get the better of both of us and it culminated in a rather explosive break up. We stopped talking but I was still hung up on her and over the course of several years I would at times reach out and try to either get back together, or at least just be friends again as I still wanted her to be a part of my life somehow, but things never worked out. We’d talk for maybe a month before she’d break contact again.

It was only about 2 years ago, 7 years after I last really spoke with my friends from high school did I reach out and apologize for how I had stopped talking to them and everything else. They held no grudge and so we began hanging out again.

As time went on I found myself thinking of my ex less and less. In fact, I think the last time I even reached out to her was last year when a friend from high school passed away, and because I believe he was a mutual friend to us both I simply sent her a message to let her know.

TLDR: I get how you feel, but rather than trying to force yourself to give up on him/her, let yourself just relax, enjoy your time with friends and activities you love and in time you will find that you will have gotten over them naturally.
