I mean, short of any other actual information, I'll say that's your assumption and you're being way too negative and put in your head here. Meaning is created not just by what she says but how you respond to it. Often, she's just throwing something out there and her actual feelings will be clarified by the cool or uncool way you respond to it. Your way isn't what I would call "qualifying her." More so, you disqualified yourself. Sure, a confident upperclasswoman might be able to dance with that kind of response. An 18 year old freshman, who possibly said what she said out insecurity, not as much.

I might've gone with something like: "Haha guess I'll have to show you the ropes" etc

No advice but questions of my own. What's wrong with these age gaps though?

I'm 20 and I guess 18-22 is fair game.

Even when I'm 25 except for super duper serious LTRs My range will stay 18-27.

There are a few things to consider.

First, if your game was on point the age issue may not even come up. Everyone has a selective focus. We don’t see everything, we focus on a few basic things. It’s how the mind works. Is she seeing an older guy hitting on her, or is she having fun with this new person that has a really cool vibe? She won’t even see the age if she is caught up in the moment with positive emotions.

The other thing, a good frame should be you are just a social person having fun with people. The outcome isn’t important to you, it’s the moment and your vibe that matters. If she thinks your too old, that isn’t something that effects you. It’s all the same. No attachment to the outcome. That’s the mindset.

If it’s a daytime approach have you considered a more indirect approach? It may be worth experimenting with. Be a cool guy, read the signals (which could be non verbal), and show sexual intent when the time is right. Not necessarily right off the open.

O&P baby..Override and Persist..she’s young and mentions age?…change the topic by making her laugh about anything else and continue to talk and make her laugh..manipulate the conversation so she has to respond to whatever topic you directed the conversation to go in and don’t let up until you think the topic has been overridden by another..get the digits and wrap up the convo asap and leave fast af before she has a chance to think about it more. Plenty of women like or prefer older men. She could be more making sure it's not a problem for you than it's a problem for her.

Most of the time it's best to just address it briefly and move on, ignore it entirely, or even double down.

"It's OK I'm legal" (Pulling the reverse implying she's older when it's obvious you're not, also flirty)

"I was pretty certain you're female, glad you clarified" (Deliberate misinterpretation of word 'Freshman' )

"Haha you seem very mature, but I'd still probably card you to buy cold medicine" (You're say she's an adult but appears youthful, but you're not addressing the age gap directly because it doesn't bother you)

Joke that she is too old for you. Did this with a 22 year old, I'm 34. Some girls are put off by the age gap, some are into it. But if you feel weird about it, she will too.

I was 38, she 24. Was never a problem. As some men are into younger women, there are young women who are into older men. Everyone involved should be in legal age and then let attraction decide.

It is creep shit for guys who are too old to hit on women who are too young. If a woman is bringing up the age gap, she's telling you 'hey, old dude, stop being insanely weird' and probably has 91 dialled on her phone and her finger hovering over the 1. Act your age.
