Start with people in general. How do you meet friends? Same concept. Just start talking about anything, you will never meet anyone if you don't have any interest.
[–][deleted] 12 points13 points14 points 15 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link
That's the hardest part, though. I can't just walk up to someone and start talking. I have major, MAJOR approach anxiety, which stems from my social anxiety. I've struggled with normal human interaction my whole life, and only recently am I making an effort to change it. It just doesn't seem to be working.
[–]navarone21 18 points19 points20 points 15 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
Start slow. You have forced interactions all day (cashiers, professors, security guards...) add one or two lines of dialog to those interactions. Ask your cashier how they are doing, or if they have tried the particular item you are buying... ANYTHING that will get a little conversation going. Use eye contact and have fun.
My favorite cashier/service industry worker interaction is:
Me: Having fun?!?
Cashier: Ha... Yeah
Me: LIAR!
Share a cheap laugh and wish them a fast evening or something to that effect.
The more of these little interaction you have, you will find they are easier. If you hold the door for someone, look them in the eye and say hello. ANYTHING to keep breaking the ice a little bit every time you interact with someone.

"If you hold the door for someone, look them in the eye and say hello."
Did exactly this one day without even realizing it. Was early morning (just got up and on my way to work) - I was still half asleep. I was walking into a gas station to buy smokes and some cute girl was coming up a step or two behind from the other direction. Without even realizing what I was doing I grabbed the door for her, looked her in the eye and smiled and just said "Hey!". I got a genuine looking smile back and an excited "Hi!".
Getting me laid? Nope. But it helped me realize just how easy it is to just interact with someone. Started just trying to strike up a conversation with any cashiers I talk to, etc. I find the easiest are the 40-odd year old women. They're almost all incredibly chatty, so unless it's super-busy they're more than happy to stop and chat for a minute! And there's no stress unless you're terribly attracted to old, overweight women!

This has helped me a lot. Start with your everyday interactions, make some eye contact and think of one or two extra things to say. Notice something about them or the situation and you'll be surprised how often they smile are glad to have someone talk to them like a person.
"Long day huh?"
"Busy in here right now, evening rush?"
"First time I've been here, didn't know this place was here."
etc...No pressure, they'll be on to their next customer in 30 seconds. They might even remember you next time you come in.
It's all in your head right now. Don't try to run the marathon when you haven't even walked around the block yet.
[–]rotund 2 points3 points4 points 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Good advice! I like the conversation that you postulated, a bit more fun than "How's it going... good ... thanks... bye". The idea really is to become more fun and interesting

First, know that you are young. Between age 21 and 25 you'll change more than you'll ever change in your adult life. Chances are, two years you'll look back at this and laugh. Or feel like yelling at your former self.
I'll echo everyone here that you should be talking to everybody. If you have a hard time doing this, get a job in an environment where it's encouraged to chat up customers. It's social skills 101 with training wheels. I'm working at a coffee shop by myself and have maybe fifty short conversations in a day with people I don't know. It's MY shop, they're approaching ME, I have all the power. It's the easiest way to find a state where you're comfortable with anybody. Hell, even a retail job will give you practice looking people in the eye and saying, "Hey, what's up?" It's a great way to get out of your mind.
Talk to unattractive people. They're super easy to approach, they hook 90% of the time, and if you fuck up, who cares? No pressure!
Once you do this, you get some confidence, you can start putting yourself in higher pressured situations like talking to that beautiful girl.
But seriously, if you give up, you aren't going to change. Change requires work, but I can tell you, it's rewarding. You have a reliable path, but you need to push yourself onto it!
EDIT: Also, don't have expectations for yourself. You aren't going to be great at socializing right off the bat. There's no trick that "works." You won't all of a sudden find yourself a suave motherfucker. There'll be a lot of pain. It might click one day, but then the next day it doesn't. DON'T WORRY. It's the way the human mind learns and changes.

I work retail. I sell TV's at Best Buy. I interact with many people during every shift. But I don't think it's the same as approaching a girl. At work, I'm selling things. I'm a salesman. In the real world, I'm just another guy trying to have sex (well, that's what I assume the girl is thinking, anyway). I guess my problem is that I can't imagine why a girl would keep talking to me when she already knows what my goal is in the end.

Dude...I'm 41, getting a divorce after almost 20 years with the same woman, and I've had sex exactly once in the last three years.
I would kill to be you.
And I use to be just like you.
I remember back to when I was a freshman in college and I was petrified to talk to people. Not just girls, anyone.
I did manage to make some guy friends after a while, but never had much luck with girls.
Let me be the guy you will be 20 years from now yelling back at your former self.
Get out there and just eff-ing do it!
Start small, just like all the advice on here. Chat up a cashier. Or someone in a class. It doesn't matter what you say. Just say something. You'll figure out what works and what doesn't.
Practice with guys. Make new friends. Then move onto girls. And make new friends. Then work on something more. Kino. A #-close. A date. A k-close. You don't have to start for the f-close right away.
And nobody, repeat NOBODY, knows what you are thinking or what your ultimate end game is. And if what you say is just a friendly remark or comment, chances are they will think that you are just trying to be friendly. And if they end thinking something else, you can always retreat to a position of 'I was just trying to be friendly, you jerk/biotch.'
Like I said, I'm getting a divorce and it wasn't my idea. I've been miserable for years. As far as I was concerned I was in it for life.
She files on me the day before Thanksgiving and now I look back and think of all the wasted opportunity.
But I'm slowly getting back into dating right now, and this stuff works. And I only wish I could be where you are with the knowledge of stuff on this sub-reddit.
Even if you don't ever get laid, you'll improve your life. More friends, more self confidence, a better idea of who you are and the way you want to be...Just eff-ing do it!
[–]rotund 2 points3 points4 points 15 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
How did you get married in the first place if you don't mind me asking?
Just curious how all the shy people (like me) haven't just died out by now : )
[–]jeffiet 0 points1 point2 points 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I married a girl I knew from high school. We didn't start dating until I was out of college. I ran into her when she was working at the mall.
The only reason I talked to her was because I was doing seduction techniques without knowing that's what I was doing. I.e. I was in a mood where I didn't really care what people thought, I was just being friendly and talking and being myself. I talked to her that day, and it went from there.
[–][deleted] 5 points6 points7 points 15 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I've had sex exactly once in the last three years.
This terrifies me.
Be afraid. Be very afraid.
In retrospect the warning signs we there way back before we got married.
I think now her lack of sex drive is abnormal and has ties to both body image issues and even some hormonal issues with the pill.
Well look on the bright side.
You're soon single again \o/ Being single is a wonderful thing. And now you have a world of knowledge at your disposal that you did not have 20 years ago. You'll be fucking babes before you know it!

Girls want to have sex too. They just don't want to look like sluts. Go for it!
I can't imagine why a girl would keep talking to me
Maybe because you're the motherfucking man? You're the coolest cat since Hobbes, man, and women should be happy just to bask in your glow. Why wouldn't they want to keep talking to you?
Sounds like you've got an underlying confidence issue you need to work the kinks out of. And quite frankly when it comes down to it, we're really all just people trying to have sex with each other.

Huh, interesting. I wonder if your self-concept of a salesman is leaking over to how you interact with women. In which case, you're selling a girl a product you don't believe in. In which case, it's not going to work.
At Best Buy, stop focusing on the product you are selling. Have fun with people. Experiment. Best Buy is your playground. Go up to people looking at tvs and joke about stealing them. "Man, I want to steal one of these bad boys, don't you?" Play around with it! Focus not on the product, but on the fun.
Talking to unattractive women still works, btw.
EDIT: Dude. The way you're approaching women is exactly like how you approach selling tvs at best buy. You're pushing a product (your naked body). This is apparent in the way you talk about this. It's obvious to you that you are and because of that it's obvious (or so you think) to women. Please convince yourself you don't want anything sexual when talking to women. It's that much easier.
[–]Rhythmic 2 points3 points4 points 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Some limiting beliefs you have:
Sex is wrong/dirty/sinful.
Women don't like sex.
Both are B.S.
Read Nancy Friday's "My Secret Garden" to get a perspective.

Girls want attention. Girls want a masculine male to claim them... some girls are validated by men just as men are sometimes validated by women. Also, relationships aren't just about sex... Even though women want it just as much, they like to look for (and convince themselves) that other qualities are more important.
[–]AloofFool 1 point2 points3 points 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
As a newcomer, never assume you know what a girl is thinking. You will probably be wrong. BTW college girls like having sex as much as you do they are just clever at disguising it. Don't even rely on words so much as body language. Become a student of non verbal communications. That way when that cute girl is smiling and twirling her hair while telling you to fuck off you will step up your game. Don't worry about trying to F-close the HB right off the bat! Try getting a number or just try to get a smile sometimes that is all it takes.

Because she wants to as well? Because humans are social creatures and we typically enjoy interacting with others? Really, though, who cares? Why does there have to be a 'purpose' or 'goal' to the conversation? Just have a conversation for the sake of conversation.
Take that same cavalier attitude and confidence you have when you're selling TVs (and in a position of power) and just use it outside of work.
To get out of the 'conversation is a means to an end' mindset, just start talking to people you have no goal with. Next time you're buying groceries or at the store and there's a forty year old woman working cash, just talk to her. Your end goal isn't sex now (I hope!), so just relax and enjoy a conversation. The old ladies at the grocery store are some of the most talkative, gossipy people you'll find.

So sale yourself, you have good qualities right? No one will know about them if they don't know you. What's the worst that's going to happen? It'll be awkward you'll talk for a minute or two and then wont speak to her again. Right now you're just not speaking to her, the worst outcome is already better then your present situation.
It's a chick flick, but see if you can find the opening scene of "Love and Other Drugs".

Practice.
Here's the worst case scenario to your approach:
maddawg579: Uh..H-h-h-h-hi.
Girl: Oh, hi. I'm kinda busy right now. <rolls eyes>
The next day, you'll still be breathing, your heart will still beat, and the sun will still rise.
If you want to get over your approach anxiety, you need to approach people. Approach anxiety isn't a permanent problem, but it's not going to go away on it's own.

Dude, okay. As a crutch and until you are comfortable talking with people, do this:
Write down on paper three stories of semi-interesting things that have happened to you. Keep the stories short (few sentences) with a beginning, middle, and end or moral to the story. Recite them and remember them.
Say hi to someone you don't know, that has a higher probability of having something in common with you (age, interests, etc). Alternatively, compliment someone on a piece of clothing and then immediately ask them an easy question. For example "Hey, sweet camera, how do you like that model?" or "Hey I think you're cute so I had to say hi. What are you studying?". Keep your sentences short so that the person is sure to understand you.
When the person responds to a canned question, note the nouns or subjects of the sentence. For example, "I'm heading to my psychology class" or "Thanks, this is a Canon Rebel XTi, I like it pretty well." What you do is say a new sentence using one of the subjects in their sentence, and try to add on a couple points of interest for future conversation. For example, "Cool I love psychology! My cousin is going for her Masters in Psychology". Or, "Oh cool I thought about getting a Canon, my friend Brian has a 5D and says great things about it".
See how the conversation threading works? It's probably obvious to most people who are naturally friendly and extroverted, but I suspect that a lot of guys who aren't successful with women (or just not social at all) don't quite grasp it. I know I used to just ask question after question (and the wrong type of questions). You have to provide value to the conversation by making comments and trying to relate to the person you're talking to.
I recommend David Wygant and Vin DiCarlo (Conversation Cure) for this topic. I had watched all the content imaginable but it was all conceptual and not very helpful until I really dug into what makes a conversation interesting, and analyzed why my conversations would fizzle out.
Also, practice talking slowly. Never respond too soon. Take a drink with you. When the person is about done speaking, take a sip to give you time to formulate your response. Then, speak slowly as you finish thinking about what you're saying. Listen intently. Over time, your conversation skill with improve and thus your confidence as well.

The only person on this entire planet who knows you're nervous and insecure is you. That's it. For all those hotties on your campus know, you could be a confident fucking stallion and how lucky would they be if you CHOSE to approach them and invite them into your fucking awesome world? College is THE BEST place to reinvent yourself and being that you're only a freshman, you are fucking primed for such an event. Tell your old self to fuck off and go take charge of your life.
[–]unsexyMF 4 points5 points6 points 15 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
I have also felt paralyzed by analysis. I used to think that I had to get it perfect. I'll recommend some things I recommend to just about everyone in your predicament:
When you go up to a girl, just go there and admit to yourself that you're nervous. You can even tell her that you're not used to approaching women like this. The only way you'll get better is with practice. When I go up to women, I do it with minimal planning.
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 15 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
"When I go up to women, I do it with minimal planning."
This was (and I guess kind of still is) a big thing for me. I always overanalyzed and over-planned an approach until I eventually just didn't do it. This is part of the reason why I'll do much better after a couple of beer (just enough to loosen up)... Once I can get out of my head, just get up and do it, I do just fine making it up as I go.
[–]unsexyMF 0 points1 point2 points 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
That's totally my strategy. I go to the bar, have a couple beers, then I carpet-bomb the area with kamikaze attacks. Eventually I'll find a girl that thinks I'm cute, and then maybe we'll go to the dance floor.

Anything worth doing will take effort and time. You CAN change yourself, but it won't necessarily be a cakewalk. Don't be so hard on yourself and make small changes everyday or try new things everyday. One day, you'll look back and realize that all the little steps you took have suddenly added up to a very big journey.

Your prime market is cute girls at your college. If you get a bad rep there you've kind of ruined your best market. Get as far away from the college as you can, as far away from anyone you might know as is possible. Head to the next town over or whatever. Get far enough away so that you can make a fool of yourself for an entire day and you will be certain of never having to see any of those people again.
Ok, now that you are in a safe place commit to staying there until you do one thing: Say hi to at least 10 people. They can be ugyly or the wrong sex or whatever, doesn't matter. Just say hi to them. You don't even have to say anything after that, just say hi and let them walk away. That's it.
Repeat every week or two. Practice this in your far off location until your hi's start turning into conversations.

Feel afraid and do it anyways. There's no tricks. It is hard. Do the work or don't.

Everyone has approach anxiety. You are not special in this regard. This isn't just you. To get over your approach anxiety you have to really want to do it. You obviously don't want it enough bad enough. Simple as that.
[–]letsgetsilly 1 point2 points3 points 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
If you're this aware and concerned about it, it will come to you, just try to take it slow.
There are some mind-hacks that you can try to use to get yourself into action. It might help to think about how scary it would be to never try as compared to how scary it is to try.
You can also go into a conversation with the determination to fail. Pick a person and say "I'm going to go talk to them in the best way possible, and I'm going to fail". Once you can learn that failing really isn't that big of a deal, you'll understand how to get better.
As it is with everything in life that you want to improve on, don't be afraid to "get worse" at a skill before you get better. Whether you're trying to change your free throw shot to get better, enhance your programming skills, or learn to have a conversation better, you've got to change the way you do things, try new things, and get worse before your outcomes get better.
Good luck, stay focused, and relax.

Find your strong point and show it. For me it's my smile. I'm a stoned looking, middle weight, somewhat attractive, average male. However, I have a great smile. If I'm talking to someone and I'm consciously smiling, I feel more confident because I know (what i perceive) my best trait is being shown. They probably wont even notice. But it's not about that. It's about confidence. Other than that, practice. Just force social interaction. Any time you talk to someone, try to give more than the minimal interaction. Make a joke out of something. If you see someone you "kinda" know and could get away with out saying hello, don't. Say hi to everyone. Constant small social interactions.

salsa dancing
A bit off topic, but how is it? I kind of want to learn
[–]Rhythmic 1 point2 points3 points 15 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
LOL, that's a long story.
It's already been some years ago. I decided to leverage my musical talent and do something for my social life.
At that time, I used to be extremely shy and socially inept.
I was also a cheapskate, and didn't want to pay for salsa classes. So for a while, I used to go to the local events, sit down, watch the people dance, and I was trying to figure out what they were doing. I also tried to find stuff on the internet. None of it worked.
Finally, I gave in and started going to salsa classes. Things started to change slowly. One of the classes really sucked, because my partner and I couldn't stand each other. I didn't give up though. I started attending one more class, which was fun.
Gradually, I learned to loosen up. My skills improved also. Then I was hooked, and I couldn't have enough of it. I also spent some cash on more classes, and I'm glad I did.
When you go dancing, you HAVE TO go up to women and ask them to dance. This used to be a pain in the ass, because I was so terribly shy. When a woman said NO to me, this used to seem like the end of the world to me. I felt like a loser, and got pissed at the girl.
After spending A LOT of time there, I'm much more relaxed now.
There's no longer the NEED to be conquering all of the women. I've already danced so much, that I don't have to be doing it all the time. I like to chill, listen to the music and watch others dance. It's like a live dance show, and there are some great dancers doing crazy stuff. I don't watch TV, it can never be as good.
When I feel like taking part, I just go up to some woman, and she is usually happy about it. Not always, but most of the time. They also love physical contact. There's lots of "kino" going on. Mmmmm, that's what we all humans love.
Not everybody falls for salsa dancing. The beginning is hard. You have to lead, and are responsible for both your partner and yourself. It can be frustrating in the beginning, and many people run away and never look back.
If you stay, you will be hooked for life. I know I am.

Forget about picking up and conversating for a few days. Just focus on letting your anxieties go and not taking everything so seriously. Everything is fine. If you think about it, you'll realize that whatever comes your way, you'll handle it one way or another and move on. Just go through your day staying conscious of the fact that nothing is a big deal. Be happy, you know? I mean, you don't want to be irresponsible or anything, but it does no good to be all uptight. You got some chore to do, like laundry or the dishes or something? Just do it. Don't dwell on it and get all uptight about it. Just realize it's no big deal and get it done. Nothing's a big deal. You're going to fucking die someday. Now that's a big deal. What are you going to have to show for your life after you're dead? Are you going to be forgotten or remembered?

i tend to meet people most in lines, just say interesting random shit loud enough for the person behind and infront of you can hear you such as "damn i hope this gos by faster i've got a (enter class here) to go to" and if they have similaritys they usually respond, and you have to PUSH the conversation until you get where you want to be at the beggining of the line. from then on its bassically friends meeting you with other friends and the 5 degrees of seperation

Join student organizations. Join clubs. Learn to play pool. Put on a play. There is so much for you to do, and your parents are paying so you can do most of it for free with lots of other people your age. Be proactive. Organize people to do things you want to do. Practice being a leader. Work on having the awesomest college experience you can.

I understand where you're coming from. I'm also a freshman in college, and until relatively recently I was in much the same position. All throughout my childhood I was an awkward kid, who had difficulty talking to new kids, and women in particular. At some point in between junior and senior year this all changed.
How did it change you may ask? I STOPPED GIVING A FUCK. By far, that single sentence changed my life more than anything else. I realized that no one else is of any consequence, and that if I just do what I do, things will generally work out for the better. Now, this is a nihilistic approach to things, but it works. By ceasing to care about what the other person/people think, it removes all limitations that I would otherwise place on myself. Also, I started enjoying trees, and woa did that help with my people skills.

Ask them questions about themselves. Girls love to talk about themselves.

also, as a way to reduce my own social anxiety, i used to work to make other people a little uncomfortable with my comments.
Try this for fun:
Get in the elevator with several people. Belch.
Or this:
Ask somebody on the bus/train/bench/etc... 'what has two legs and bleeds profusely?' they will look at you like a pervert, and get really uncomfortable. when they don't answer or give up trying.... 'half of a giraffe'. then walk away.
go to a part of town you wouldn't normally hang out in. that way you never ever have to see those people again.
good luck.

Funny thing actually, this happened to me today let me share. I was on the bus from college (im a freshman just like you) and I saw this cute chick. In my head I'm just like "yeah, when the bus stops, I'm gonna stop her in her tracks and introduce her". When the bus stopped I pussed out and walked right passed her and all that popped in my head was "forever alone". So when I go upstairs im just like man im such a little pussy. I walk in the subway (crammed btw) and theres another cute girl who goes to my school standing in front of me the whole time. We RARELY made eye contact and nothing more. The same thoughts were in my head "yeah im gonna talk to her when the bus stops". What do I do? I speed ahead of her ONCE AGAIN. So I reach the top of the stairs and I'm like, you know what, fuck this, I'm doing it. I stopped her and I say "Can I borrow you for a minute?" and she was cool with it. I came up with some bullshit story that i was doing some project how boys are intimidated of good looking girls and I wanted her input on it. At this point i sound fucking utterly nervous and she sensed it, but I didn't care. We start talking and i find out she goes to the same college as me and I tell her that there was a buddy of mine "recording this for my project". Complete bullshit, I know. Do I think she bought it? Absolutely not. And I don't really care. I manned up and actually did it. I didn't get any contact information off her because I'm not that good considering this was my first time EVER doing it. Now I feel like I accomplished something and I feel less nervous, in a way that I can approach more girls. Trust me. Next time you see a good looking girl, or even AVERAGE go for it. It doesn't matter what happens. The more you do it, the more you will get used to it. If you can't think of anything, use my story.

You are not your ego. Your approach anxiety is your ego attempting to protect your being from harm. It is misguided, and harmful in this situation. Simply do not heed it. Be aware of it, and its concerns, but do not let them dictate the actions you take. Pain is painful, awareness of pain is not painful. The "I" is not all of who you are.

So my ego is disguising itself as approach anxiety so it can't be hurt in case I fail?
That fucking bastard. I'll kill him.
But how do I tell it to fuck off when I need to?
[–]diath 0 points1 point2 points 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
practice. choose to do what you fear. you may be shivering, shaking in anxiety, but talk to them anyway. it will get easier.

You will care less and less the more you expose yourself to situations that are problematic to you now. This desensitization is a normal human process and you know that it works. How could farmers possible stand in cow shit all day long? They don't smell it anymore after some time.
Bottomline: Expose yourself to some serious shit.
You'll hear the advice to leave your comfort zone all the time here, because it's so fucking true. I've only realized that myself when I was at an after hour talking to dozens of people. Some weak guys answer (disrespectful) didn't phase me in the least bit. That's something I know for a fact would have influenced me negatively in the past. Only later (looking back) did I realize that this didn't affect me negatively at all. Instead, it even amused me as I've looked through his transparent motive.
This sort of "player hating" was another major problem for me in the past. I've read in "Mode One" about that and realized that it's ok and normal to be hated by some guys and that nothing is wrong with me in that situation, because I haven't done anything wrong at all.
