"As my friend was passing the elephants, he suddenly stopped, confused by the fact that these huge creatures were being held by only a small rope tied to their front leg. No chains, no cages. It was obvious that the elephants could, at anytime, break away from the ropes they were tied to but for some reason, they did not. My friend saw a trainer nearby and asked why these beautiful, magnificent animals just stood there and made no attempt to get away.

“Well,” he said, “when they are very young and much smaller we use the same size rope to tie them and, at that age, it’s enough to hold them. As they grow up, they are conditioned to believe they cannot break away. They believe the rope can still hold them, so they never try to break free.” My friend was amazed. These animals could at any time break free from their bonds but because they believed they couldn’t, they were stuck right where they were. The powerful and gigantic creature has limited its present abilities by the limitations of its past.

Like the elephants, how many of us go trough life holding onto a belief that we cannot do something, simply because we failed at it once? How many of us refuse to attempt something new and challenging because of our so called MINDSET?

This is awesome!

Not necessarily seddit related but with my own training in singing I've witnessed this very same problem -> outcome. Basically, I'm naturally a bass/baritone singer, and every singing teacher I've ever had told me I'd never have a chance at singing songs that were in high registers (which is basically ALL of my favorite music). So I went by for years only singing the boring low to mid stuff in my chest voice that I didn't really like that much, but could do naturally.

It wasn't until I said "fuck it, and fuck them" to all those classical voice teachers and started doing my own training that I started to realize that yes - a baritone can sing high stuff and can sing it well (I looked to idols such as Chris Cornell and Freddy Mercury).

Fast forward a year after ditching those fuckers and I can sing any high song I want to, any queen song, any soundgarden/temple of the dog/audioslave song, hell I can fucking sing Adele in the same key as her and not in falsetto.

Point being - fuck anyone who tells you that you can't do something. If there's a will there's a way. Believe in yourself, and you'll prevail.

Reminds me of when we trained our dog, we put a small board up too keep her in the kitchen, to avoid messes as she was getting house trained. As she got older and bigger, she would roam the house, push doors open, and all round do as she pleased. Unless there was a board in her way.

Try to step over the board.

Perhaps the Elephant understands the futility of it all? Elephants are very intelligent. Maybe they know it's pointless to break free. Afterall where is the Elephant going to hide after he breaks out of the San Diego zoo?

Anyway, I remember reading this when I was an AFC. Not the most preeminently inspirational thing, but it's true. Mindset is huge, but I think confidence is the biggest thing. Once you break out of your weak chain, you start to run. Downhill. You constantly gain momentum - each approach becomes easier until one day you're at the strip club with two bisexuals on your arm, biding your time until you all return home for a BDSM three-some.
