So.. being rejected hurts because you’re wired for connection and your brain treats social rejection similarly to physical pain. So the first thing is: don’t gaslight yourself into thinking it shouldn’t sting. It will, and that’s normal.
The shift isn’t about “not caring”.. it’s more about fundamentally reinterpreting what rejection means.
The key is to view rejection as simply information or data, not verdict.
When someone rejects you, they’re giving you data: “this isn’t a match.” That’s different from “you’re defective.” Most rejections aren’t about your inherent worth - they’re about fit, timing, what the other person needs or is capable of, their own fears and patterns. You can be an incredible person and still be wrong for someone, or they for you.
Think about foods you don’t like. Your dislike of, say, cilantro doesn’t mean cilantro is objectively bad - it just means you’re not compatible with cilantro. The cilantro isn’t sitting around devastated. Someone else loves it. Rejection often says more about the other person’s preferences, capacity, or circumstances than about you.
You become okay with rejection the way you become okay with cold water - through repeated exposure where you prove to yourself you survive it. Each rejection you experience and move past is evidence that you’re more durable than you imagined. The people most comfortable with rejection aren’t made of different stuff - they’ve just been rejected more and learned they don’t break.
Every “no” is clearing space for a better “yes.” Seriously, trust that shit. When you get rejected from something that wasn’t right, you’re free to find something that is. Some of the best things in people’s lives only happened because they got rejected from their plan A. The adage “When one door closes, another opens” is quite valid.
I’m not saying it won’t sting, but next time you see someone worth striking up a convo with, just do it. Mentally count down to 5 in your head; and when it reaches 0, you approach.
