I will share 2 stories of what happened to me.

First, when I was just out of high school ('99) I was working at a big box retailer. My best friend also worked at the same store. The store hired a bunch of temps for the holiday season and one of them caught my eye. We flirted a bit and I asked her out. I was 18, she was 16-17, dont really remember.

I wasnt aware but she was also hired with a few of her friends. She decided to do a little high school investigating and had one of her guy friends who was a cashier ask my friend what was up. So, on my day off, he goes to my friend and says "i was thinking about asking the girl out but I saw your friend was flirting with her, are they dating?" To which my dumb ass best friend replied "they fucking like bunnies."

Sure enough shit hit the fan.

When I got back to work on monday, I was pulled into a meeting w/ all of the managers. I didn't even know what was going on. I was totally blindsided. I was written up, forced to go to company hr counseling / training. I was in line for a raise and promotion, lost that, and my shift was changed from 8a-5p mon-fri (40 hours) to 6p-12a tues-sat (30 hours, causing me to go part time and lose my benefits). I went from being one of the most well liked people in the store to the most hated. By this time everyone thought that i was going around telling people that I banged this sweet high school girl. No one wanted to have anything to do with me. If I walked into the break room, everyone would leave. I would go outside for a smoke and everyone that was already out smoking would go inside or to their cars.

Not to mention the fact that the girl wouldn't talk to me or let me try to explain.

When my friend told the truth and said that he was just joking around and that I never said anything about the girl to him, everyone just said that he was lying and covering for me.

Now, my friend had enlisted in the military and was leaving for basic training soon. On his last day, he went up to the girl and her friends in the break room and explained to them exactly what had happened. To this day I don't know what he did or said differently but they actually listened to him this time. They came and apologized to me, but it was too late and I was too bitter to listen. I told her that her and her friends already fucked me over royally and that they couldn't take back the damage that had been done and that I didn't want anything to do with them.

None of them were brought on full time after the holiday season. In her last week at the store, she told the managers that she had made a mistake, and that everything was a big mix up. The managers pulled me into a meeting, apologized to me and gave me back my old schedule. They told the rest of the supervisors what happened and I got a lot of apologies. And with the rest of the holiday temps gone, things started to get back to normal.

On the girls last day there, she slipped a note into my locker. It said that she was moving out of state and that she was sorry for everything that happened, that she should have just listened to me and let me explain from the start, and that she wishes that things could have gone differently. blah, blah, blah. Heres the kicker, she said that she still really liked me and that if I was ever in texas I should call her and that she would turn the rumor into truth and gave me her phone number.

I tore the note in half and left it there on the floor.

Second time, I was working sales at a gym. We got a new front desk girl to work the closing shift. After work, a small group of us used to hang out and do whatever came to mind, usually with a lot of alcohol. After a couple of weeks I invited her out. She had a great time with the group and I could tell she was interested.

Now, my shift would end at 10:00p and the gym closed at 12a. I would usually work out after work and then relax in the private sauna / steam room / jacuzzi. One night I was in the jacuzzi and lost track of time. Her job as the closer was to make sure that everyone was out of the gym before locking up, this included checking the locker rooms. I was surprised when she came in not realizing it was that late. I told her I would shower real quick and get out so she could close. She told me not to worry about it, said everyone else was gone and that I was the only one left. She told me to take my time and that she was going to lock the doors. She came back a minute later, said that everything was locked and that we were the only 2 in the building. Then she said she would join me in the jacuzzi, but that she didn't have a bathing suit. I tell her she doesn't need one, she daringly tells me she's not getting naked unless I do. I'm out of my shorts in the blink of an eye and tell her its her turn. She gets naked and joins me.

We end up hooking up for about a month and a half before she tells me that she met a guy that she wants to get serious with and breaks it off with me.

Before doing the actual deed. Make sure she knows that either of you can back out for no reason. Make sure she fully understands this. Then proceed to fuck each other brains out.

If you have the slight idea she does not completely understand that, do not do it.

It's different for everyone but for me personally, it has proven to be a bad idea. It can be a distraction or if it goes sour between you and the coworker, you're still stuck seeing them daily.

I just feel like, there are so many women outside of work that you don't have to deal with everyday or have to get into a weird situation if it doesn't work out, that it's not worth pursuing. Co-worker's friends on the other hand...

Met my current girlfriend of two years at work (we've both since moved on to other jobs). It can work, but you just have to be super careful, and know that they're worth it.

Keep everything from work at work, everything from home at home. Hooking up with coworkers is a double edged sword, you might not enjoy your job after you two break up afterwards. Or, things will turn out great and you'll both move up in your careers and be separated work/tasks-wise.

I found hooking up with a co-worker really depends on where you work.

Restaurant work, hooking up with fellow female workers is OK. Pretty common at 90% of the restaurants I've worked at. Get drunk after work at hook up. Do it until either one gets bored and find another co-worker to hook up with.

Office- NO. Too many factors fall into play, and someone or both will find themselfs unemployeed. Small Hotel- NO Resorts w/ Many Departments= Yes, but be smart about it.
