tl;dr: Are dinner dates really that bad? How can I keep it to light drinks and apps especially when they're preferred time to meet is a sunday night and the general energy as well as chances of hooking up are much lower? How do you end an app/dinner date without trying to close if you want the relationship to progress without being like - oh, well i gues were done here! see ya next time! Or the old i'm meeting friends after this/have something...late on a sunday/work night without being obviously lying??... I have just been dating again for the first time in years and re-learning the ropes to what was once easy for me and noticing I have developed a lot of blind spots so any help is appreciated.

Most of my first dates, especially on weekends where a girl has committed to dinner have pretty well. However, I see a very strong theme of never taking a woman out to dinner on the first date due to time, money, and perceived commitment. I get that now and have moved it more to just grabbing apps with it open ended or close ended to reduce pressure, but there isn't much in my mid-sized city to do besides grab a bite, especially something that displays high value.

Recently, I was connected with a girl that exists just outside my immediate friend circle via mutual friends instead of the apps. Somewhat recently single, well-known and liked. We've had a good back and forth since I reached out when she told a mutual she was 'interested' including telling me how much I 'remind her of her dad' after laughing at a joke and she was 'blushing'. She was busy most of the weekend with reasonable, clear commitments but open to 'Sunday late after noon or Evening' and down "for whatever". This leaves little in the way of anything but appetizers / dinner in my opinion and I have been learning, even though Sunday isn't ideal for a hookup given work looming, you absolutely have to strike while the irons hot or they'll think you have no interest.

I made patio reservations around 6:30-7 in various decent spots around town. Plan for us to drive separate, and say "lets just grab some drinks and apps," if the date flows then keep it going. One of the spots is even a short walk from my place through a park but feel that is way too forward to be walking back and forth from my place to a spot, especially on a sunday...
