My guess would be by being detached from the outcome of your approach. You are approaching the woman because you think she's attractive and everything you do from that point on is to gauge if she's worth YOUR time. YOU decide if you want to spend more time with her while getting to know her. If she is, you can see where it goes, if she isn't receptive or doesn't seem like she wants to get to know you better, you still don't care because you respected your wishes by approaching her. Now she's respecting hers. It's nothing personal.

There is nothing needy about approaching a girl unless you say some bullshit like:

“please like me no one likes me, give me a chance” or “hey if you go out with me i’d buy you anything, i would treat you so well, i would make you priority number one” etc..

But who in their right mind would say something like this.

Neediness happens when you treat anything that isn’t an absolute no from a girl as a maybe. Where you basically cling onto breadcrumbs out of hope that she might eventually choose you if you are patient enough and put more effort that is not being reciprocated equally or out reciprocated.

It also happens when you try to win her over, when you start telling her reasons why she should choose you, giving her reasons to give you a chance or when you try to do things with the goal of impressing her or showing off how great you are in an attempt to persuade her.

So to not come off as needy, you need to stop acting like you want her to make sure she thinks well of you, stop trying to score points, stop trying to see dating as a meritocracy, stop trying to prove your worth and instead evaluate her and see whether she has qualities you want in a woman and whether she is good enough for you.

This doesn’t mean asking her to convince you or to prove her worth to you, it just means that you silently screen her while you are talking to her like a regular human being but making mental notes in your mind about her virtues and flaws as you speak.

Things you like things that are red flags or traits or values you dislike or don’t share, etc

So you are not there to prove to her why you are better than other guys, because that mindset y itself is needy and counterproductive.

You are there to see if she is fun person to be with, to see if she is more than just her looks, to not be impressed by her looks and instead prioritize her personality, being objective about whether she even deserves to have the privilege of going on a date with you.

Not in an arrogant “I’m better than you” way but in a “my time is precious and i don’t want to waste it on any random girl no matter how pretty she is if i don’t have genuine fun in the first interaction with her”.

You’re right, your approach alone will signal that in a way you’re attracted to her, you are orbiting her, not the other around. So ideally that’s where you put your boundary. Next thing you do is when you start the convo, it should not focus on her. But the environment around you and her, or even focus on you if you can master it.

That's a dreadful mindset to have. It's just you and her. The reality is if you look around you properly there's very few guys to compete with.

Also is the book itself still relevant this day and age?

All models is a 101 on dating. If you haven't gone on a date and you need a guide that's it

but i still struggle to find the correct balance.

You're the man so you're supposed to initiate. It doesn't mean you're supposed to do more than 50% of the work. So if you're walking more than your half of the way towards her then you're acting needy.

The problem is just that most guys keep talking and trying with girls who obviously don't want to walk their 50% of the way

I think there are two layers to this. One layer is your reasoning for initiating, the other is your level of comfort in your reasoning.

Are you initiating social interaction for only one purpose or are you open to seeing where it goes? In that sense you might NEED one reaction to feel like it went well.

Are you comfortable with the reasons why you're initiating? If, let's say, you are opening for one reason. Are you more cool with that than you'll be uncool with them blowing you out for it?

The process is the process... if you respect the process, try not to control every outcome, but comfortably push things in the direction you truly want them to go while making honest considerations for the other person's wants without losing yourself in them. I think that's the general sweet spot for non-neediness. Play the game to play the game.

You're actually right that it seems contradictory that approaching itself is you having more interest and on surface seems needy. But non neediness comes in when you know you can pull back or move away from the girl if she doesn't show interest. That's non neediness and detachment

Just like that when u are selling yourself. Have healthy levels of entitlement and it will come off through ur behavior . Be calm, have direct eye contact and a tiny smirk. Learn to have good comebacks , be unhinged while talking and totally own everything u say.

I would say having your focus on something third.

A lot of non-needy guys are like that cause they would be focusing on more concerning issues they are having, maybe a goal or just something other than approaching a girl.

I mean sure, meeting someone, approaching them and getting to know them is great and all, but also its not your main objective in whatever social situation.

Approaching a girl and getting potentially rejected or not would seem trivial if you got fired that day and trying to blow off some steam. Ironically its the better mentality
