Repeat the name to yourself, and say it back to the person. Also, try to associate the name with something.

Put your hand on a person's shoulder to get their attention if you're behind them, I think that's the best way.

I'ma start finals once my hangover blows over...

I typically give people an assosiation with their names. If I met a person called hannah, and she was a blonde, I would remember her by remembering Hannah Montana or something lame.

Napolian had been known NEVER to forget a face, and if you can't think of someting, write down her name and look at it. Putting it into your phone works too.

To make your presence more known with people that you know... is to activly contribute, and not shadow them.

Also why the hell are you behind a group of friends, get along side of them so they can see you.

Is it that bad if you admit you forgot? I do this plenty, and just ask them again.

I also do something else. When I forget their names I'll say "I bet you have forgotten my name", unfortunately they rarely do, and then they suspect something is up and ask me right back. Then I say "of course I remember... it's Alice. Mmm-mm? A...mber. Mm-mmm? Er.... big grin".

Anyway, I don't really mind if they find out I forgot. Not something I'm realistically embarrassed about. Like I said, it happens plenty.

repeating their names helps. shake their hands when you meet them and while looking at them in the eyes say "hi (her name) I'm (your name) nice to meet you." they will remember your name that way too.

But in all seriousness. I had this problem and used a variation of this technique. What you need to do is think of something that either rhymes with their name or has the same first letter that defines them. For example the other day I met a guy named steven who was laying back on a couch at a party. When he said "hey its good to meet you my name is Steven" I immediately though Slouchy Steven. Never forgot his name. Do this with everyone and it even lightens the mood

Been there. There's a number of techniques you can use to help you memorise names. Problem is alone they are worthless, because (in my experience) most of the time we simply do not pay attention, so we would also not remember to use them. So I used some visualization and future pacing to anchor my new behaviour to the moments where I'm given someone's name.

The most basic 'technique' is to simply focus. You hear the name and immediately think "Important! Her/His name is name". That moment alone, where you awake and focus on the name usually does it. Also if you are being introduced, do say it aloud, as in "nice to meet you name". To make it more powerful, repeat the name in your head a bunch of times. Each time louder. And visualize it next to the person. And if you know someone with the same name group them in your mind. And future pace yourself walking to this person and greeting her by saying her name, and the other person with the same name can be in that picture to, greet them both.

Sure this sounds like a lot, but you can run some of this in your head in a second. And if you visualise and future pace yourself doing this, and associate all these techniques together, as soon as someone says their name this will just run in the back of your mind instantly. These days I can remember names of people I've met once, for ages.

Also i seem to have this ability to be behind a group of people I know and one will look over and I'll scare them. Is there any better way to make my presence known?

If you smoke, stop smoking. It effects literally everything in your body. If you drink a lot, curtail your drinking as this also affects memory recall.

As a general tip, associate the person's name with something interesting about them. For instance, if you see someone named John and he happens to have a cool tattoo, put him in your phone as John Tattoo. Or if you meet some cute chick who you recall is Irish, associate that with them too.

I also have a terrible memory, so I always try to associate notable traits along with the name.

I also know a woman named Hannah, and the reason why I remember her so vividly is because she's the only Irish-Lebanese mix I've ever met.

Fuck it, you don't need to remember their names, just their faces and how you know them. Tell them you've forgotten their name. Don't be embarrassed, forgive yourself your faults and others will as well.

Hell, I've had times where I've known someone for years, and I do know their name and I just drop it, cannot remember it, I say as much and I swear no one has ever been insulted.

Give them nicknames that you can remember. I've done this several times when meeting large groups of people. I let them all go around and introduce themselves, I smile and nod attentively, then say "Nice to meet you all! I'm absolutely terrible with names so here's what I'm here's what I'm calling you tonight" and then give them all funny names.

No, seriously. I did it 3 weeks ago and luckily she put her name in and then called me right then and there as well. I got lucky too because it was a name I had literally never heard of before as a first name.

Nicknames. You only have to remember a few, i.e. think of all the girls you know who fancy themselves a photographer--they can all answer to "Camera Girl." One of my favorites is "Sunshine." It just makes everybody happy.
