It depends on how you sell it. I have a friend who, if he talked about video games, would spend 30 minutes boring a girl to death talking about The Legend of Zelda's storyline and how video games are art.

Meanwhile with my girlfriend, I turn it into a joke. Not only is my girlfriend down to play fun games like DDR with me, I was actually able to convince her to play (brace yourselves) Dungeons and Dragons with me.

She's definitely NOT a "nerd". She just loves to spend time with me and have a good time. Both things are achievable with gaming.

So as it's been stated, it has a negative stereotype applied to it so if you accidentally convey to a girl you fit that stereotype, it MIGHT hurt you. But it definitely won't stop you.

Truth. Video games are no different from other hobbies - it's just a result of the negative stereotype that gamers play for 10 hours/day and disregard other aspects of life. This sounds like a conversation I'd have with my friend after a few hits from the pipe, ha.

For me personally, gaming itself is not an obstacle, but it is a distraction. I'm thinking about quitting to focus on other more physical hobbies or my studies.

Video games do have a negative stereotype though. The stereotype is the introvert with no social skills. Now you can break that stereotype easily by just talking but some preconceived notions could linger.

Sorry guys, there's going to be some down-voting on my comment, but I'll make it anyway. Video games are not inherently bad, but they lead to bad behavior. Games are different from most (but not all) other hobbies in that they occur in physical isolation, and when they do occur around others, those others skew massively disproportionately male.

If you don't have a problem with the quantity of physical interactions you have with attractive females on a daily basis, then you are certainly welcome to play whatever games you want as much as you want.

But games are an obstruction when you chose to play them as an alternative to physically spending time around people. If you go cold turkey with gaming and find yourself bored, suddenly you get other hobbies and participate in activities that can bring you into contact with women. The more interactions you have, the more comfortable you are, and the higher the number of females are for you to seduce.

It's not that games are bad for you, just that games let you do things that are bad for you. If you don't have a problem, then you don't have a problem. But if you're looking for more women right now and you think its okay that you spend a few hours a day alone in a room looking at a screen, you're sorely mistaken. Quit now.

I say this to you as a game lover.

I wish I could upvote this more than once, I game all the time yet still find time to be social and go out. I love meeting new people and I love playing video games.

I find that a lot of girls now a days game themselves. I wouldn't bring it up, but it almost always enters the conversation as it's a part of my life. I've never had an adverse reaction to talking about games, and more than a couple of times it's given us something in common as pretty much everyone has or does play some form of videogame.

Doing anything on the computer, playing with my phone, playing video games makes me feel less social and hurts my ability to pick up girls.

I quit playing video games around the time i discovered the gym and PU. If you can balance your life and career goals while being a gamer, congratulations, but for me I would get hooked right into them and it was unhealthy. I really have no interest in playing again, which is great because life has been so much better putting that time to better use.

I'm an avid gamer and I do software development for a living, when I tell girls they usually thinks it's cool (because it's unusual). Sometimes I get things like: "You don't seem like a nerd!" or "Really? I would have never guessed!". It has never hurt my chances with a girl. I think it's because of the old stereotype of gamers being forever alone, neckbearded, basement dwellers -- however, games are so mainstream now that there are people from all walks of life that play them. The forever alone crowd still exists, but there are many normal people in the IT/gaming scene.

Also, don't bring up video games unless they ask you what your interests are and even then you shouldn't bring up specific titles, etc. Most girls give 0 fucks about games and you'll just bore them to death.

One of the biggest obstacles for men trying to be attractive is in getting women to actually pay attention to them as a person, and not just as a 'category'.

For instance, you can be a hardcore gamer without wearing a Legend of Zelda T-shirt and having Skyrim posters in your apartment. You want to appear as though you have a complex personality, not a simple, easily-stereotyped one. Easily-stereotyped personalities are dismissed out-of-hand.

I would rather talk about it. I'm a girl who games myself and its an important hobby of mine that I spend a lot of time and money on, so much so that I don't think I could get with a guy who didn't game.

I think as long as you can disconnect yourself from gaming from time to time and not let it affect decisions on your social life, its fine.

I like talking about games, but I also love listening to people talk about their hobbies if they are truly passionate about them, even if I don't share the same interest in that hobby.

I live next to an arcade bar that I go to from time to time. It has a good amount of ladies and a lot of them play the arcades too. I think playing two player games can be a lot of fun and a good way to get close. Board and card games are good fun as well.

PLAYING games is fine.

TALKING about games to girls is not recommended. Always assume girls have zero interest in talking about video games unless THEY bring it up. You should never bring it up.

Honestly, most younger girls probably play games some of the time, but will view it as being perilously uncool to talk about it in any sort of social situation where they aren't terribly familiar with the guy.

Not a good icebreaker.
