Check out the documentary "Food, Inc." The cows that are allowed to roam and eat grass are healthier and therefore produce better meat. Most of our beef comes from cattle standing around in layers of their own dung, which is why they have to be fed antibiotics constantly.
So while there is a hippie aspect to treating animals better, it also makes good sense from a health standpoint.
