Somalia is pretty bad because it's done on children who will remember and with no anesthesia. Not saying it's ever okay, but it's extra horrific there.

I'm lucky I live in a county where circumcision isn't very common now (Canada) but it used to be. I'm circumcised but my son isn't.

I actually wanted to get him circumcised at first because I didn't know any better, luckily my wife and the doctor said no way. Once i thought about it more I realized they're right and it's fucking weird that people do it.

A few facts.

Mr Kellogg, of cereal fame, brought circumcision to general Medical practice in the U. S. for the SPECIFIC purpose of decreasing masturbation, which he viewed as sinful. His reasoning was if you make masturbation LESS PLEASURABLE by making the penis LESS SENSITIVE TO PHYSICAL EROTIC STIMULATUON, then teen age boys would be less inclined to do it, as it wasn't as pleasurable any more. Nobody in the Western Medical Establishment knew how to do a radical circumcision, as opposed to just removing the tip, so they had to learn from Moyels, Rabbis with supervisado training. In an infant (until puberty),) the foreskin is tightly attached to the underlying glans in the same fashion tha the root of a a fingernail is attached to the finger. Removing the foreskin is as painful and traumatic as ripping a fingernail from the underlying nail bed. And circumcisions actually remove fully half of penile skin, leaving a large band of much less sensitive skin - the scar band - on the penile shaft, from about half way up the base to the corona of the glans

Anatomically, the male foreskin is homologous to the prepuce or hood covering the tip of the clitoris . Both cover, protect, and allow maximum sensitivity of the organs they cover (glans of penis and tip of clitoris,) and both arise from the same embryological tissue. [What is homologous to labia / lips of the vulva is the skin of the scrotum, not the foreskin.]
The glans of penis and tip of clitoris are Mucosa, like the inside of the eyelid, or cheek inside the mouth, and are very sensitive. Removing the covering that secretes lubricating fluid and protects causes the underlying mucosa to dry out, and turn into hardened keratinized tissue. Additionally, what sensory nerve endings are left are now buried several cell layers under the keratinized tissue, requiring more stimulation to react/ register sensation. So what was sensitive like your tongue over time becomes sensitive as the skin on the heel of your foot.
The foreskin contains 4000 specialized sensory nerve endings - Meisner's Corpuscles - found nowhere else in the body, and whose sole function is to send erotic pleasure sensations to the brain when stimulated during sex by the foreskin rubbing on the mucous glans. Circumcision permanently removes all that sensation. So, a man circumcised in infancy can relate to full sensation in the same way a color blind person understands full technicolor .. he can imagine what it could have been like were he intact.
With age, neurons lose sensitivity- in general. This, coupled with loss of sensitivity from keratinization and the severing / loss of the 4000 Meisner's Corpuscles - Sensory nerve endings specialized to sense erotic sensations when the foreskin is rubbed along the glans during sex - are the cause of a large proportion of ED - Erectile Dysfunction - in older men.

Honestly, if he wants that, that's his choice. You could make the argument that tattoos and ear gauges and stuff are mutilation. If he wanted to become a friggin eunuch that's his problem. The problem is denying men bodily autonomy by making decisions for them when they are babies. If he is a grown adult, he can make his own decisions.

It is an unethical practice that still exists because of ignorance from parents and lies and misinformation from “professionals”. Built on lies and double standards like: “baby’s don’t feel pain” or that it stops masterbation, that it’s “clean”, that it’s a rite of passage from religious books and it’s very name “circumcision” and not mutilation, All of it, unethical lies to downplay a one sided human rights abuse.

Yet it persists and I’m utterly tired and drained from all of it everywhere, in the U.S especially. The normalization/medicalization of mutilation.

On a positive note: The organization Intact Global has launched a lawsuit called “Hadachek v. Oregon”, alleging that the lack of protection for boys violates the Oregon Constitution’s Equal Protection Clause and Equal Rights Amendment.

People who still defend this are stupid. It’s purely cultural and rooted in body shaming and thinking penises need to look a certain way. People forget that the CDC tried to make circ mandatory for all males in 2014, but it went on to delete all evidence of that. It was going to be forced on all baby boys and children and adult men would have been “counseled” or PRESSURED into agreeing to it, even though it’s not necessary for the vast majority of men. Parents were going to be pressured into forcing this on their teenage sons and younger sons, this was all on the website, but quickly deleted. People archived it all. This has nothing to do with “health” since majority of the west does not do it and are fine, it’s about control and closed mindedness about what our bodies should look like.

I'm all for men's rights, but we undermine the cause when we equate male circumcision and female genital mutilation.

Even experts are uncertain as to whether the pros of male circumcision outweigh the cons. Apparently in more developed countries with easy access to clean running water in every home, circumcision might bring fewer benefits given that its primary benefit concerns hygiene. But at least a legitimate discussion can be had about when male circumcision is preferable or not.

As for female genital mutilation, it presents no benefits whatsoever.

So i know this is a conversation rife with controversy.

I would like to offer my 2 cents as a circumsized male. I was circumsized at 8 days old as part of my jewish upbringing. I have been party to the circumcisions of my nephews as well.

As someone who has experienced both ends of this "mutilation", as you would call it, i feel i can offer some insight.

It has had very little, if any, effect on my life. I am happy, my sex life is great, and not once have i ever looked at my penis and thought, "man i could use some extra skin on there". As far as i am aware, i have no trauma from the circumcision itself because again, i was 8 days old and had no ability to form memories or do anything besides respond to external stimuli.

Let me say this very, very fucking clearly: Not once have i ever considered myself mutilated and I actually find it kind of insulting to be referred to as such. I was not mutilated. Yes, I was given a cosmetic surgery for religious purposes, but that surgery also had medical value.

I will never have to worry about phimosis. My wife and I are at a lower risk for STIs. Keeping myself clean is simple. If i had to sacrifice some skin and some sensitivity for that, theres no fucking math there.

The fact is that a foreskin is a vestigial structure that serves no evolutionary purpose outside of protecting our penis' because we were walking around with minimal groin protection. We have clothes now.

Im not saying circumsize all kids. I am saying that parents have the right to make medical decisions for their own children. And just like a doctor cannot force a life saving procedure onto a patient, you have no right to impose your choices on other people either.

I dont think it matters and it really shouldn't be an us and them comparison with females. Male is more common in the US and most countries. The FGM stuff that is happening to little girls half way around the world in a religion that I dont follow or understand is for them to socially reject. It has no barring in the US and males.

I personally dont know where the trend is going forward with males in the US and to future protect my decision, my kid wouldnt have it done. It's not my place to judge other parents but I think my kid can understand that people are different and just be okay being himself in private. It's just not high on my list as a parent.

Circumcision isn't always bad (if done right). It promotes having a cleaner shaft and lowers the risks of STDs by something like 40-60%.
