I must seem like a real fan-boy submitting all of these Barbara Kay articles recently, but she's just been so damn good on these issues that I want to make sure the information gets out there.

I have to say, this weekend prompted me to anxiously search if anyone was on my side. I was beginning to feel extreme panic at the fact that any response to this movement, regardless of the content, if it wasn't insinuating men are primally evil was thrown out as being part of "the problem," or in some cases worse, ie. terrorism.

However, having seen: "It doesn’t matter whether the heterosexual males in question are completely crazy: If they’re crazy and misogynistic, then … well, they’re not really crazy, they’re just an extreme version of what it means to be a man"

I now feel not so completely alone. Pretty much the best I could ask for from an opinion piece. Thanks OP, you made my day feel a little easier.

There is a false equivalency that keeps popping up here. People keep trying to prove misogyny in these shootings by pointing out that women don't go on killing sprees. It's funny to me that there is only one set of symptoms for proving a person to be a sociopath, despite the gender. Men generally take out their aggression in a physical way. When I was a counselor, I noticed boys tend to fight to solve their issues. However, women are far, far more covert with their aggression. The girls would develop plans to mentally torture their victims. Shunning is a popular tactic.

Most women wouldn't go on a shooting spree, because that type of pain is too temporary and not concentrated enough. They want to see their victim squirm, not from physical pain but from mental and emotional torture.

This conversation is on NPR right now. "Not all men are murderers...but". Not all Muslims are terrorists... Not all Conservatives are racists... Not all Jews are funny, I mean bankers... On and on and on.

With all due respect, the referenced reaction seems directed more to the taped rant Roger left than his actual rampage-- which was, of course, gender neutral in its mayhem. But the trauma it inflicted on many young women served his purpose-- to terrorize them-- and it did so for a reason.

The scripted rant he read in his car was straight out of Tarantino, or Rodriguez, the self-consciously demented ranting of any number of misogynist grindhouse villains, chilling in its familiarity. This filmic stereotype is so engrained in the female psyche (and reinforced in our media) that when such a monster does morph from the screen to real life, it creates an almost-primal need to chatter it away.

Women, rightly or wrongly, fear rampage by unhinged young men more than young men fear rampage by women with knives and guns.

Why? Because it's more prevalent in our society.

(Besides, his "manifesto" wouldn't have had the same cinematic impact if he'd sat there in his Beemer threatening to seek out and punish all the skaters....)
